Janapar (2012)
Dull and boring with sloppy editing
I think a lot of people get excited about the idea of this type of trip more so than the actual documentary.
The video itself is utterly boring and an editorial mess. Whoever thinks the editing is superb is clueless about film editing.
There's barely any story in it as we're never properly introduced to the main three characters. We're given no explanation of why his riding partners are deciding to abandon the trip and head out on their own.
The editing is so sloppy that the main character jumps around from location to location with no clear indicator of how he got there.
For example one scene he's eating food with some doctors in Sudan with a plan to cycle to Ethiopia and then the very next scene he's suddenly in Armenia with some girl he met!
The audience is never introduced to the girl, or how he suddenly found himself in Armenia or what happened to the plan to cycle to Ethiopia.
This video isn't worth the $5 I spent to rent it. There are far better films on adventure cycling on Youtube.
Ride the Divide (2010)
Very boring
I agree with cowsincars that this film really suffers from a lack of storytelling and direction. We're barely introduced to the characters and even what the race is all about. No backstory on the prep or how the race got started or anything. The filmmakers even missed the start of the actual race!
The editing is sloppy. The riders are riding through some of the most scenic areas in the world and the cinematography looks like it was shot by some kid on a phone.
We don't get any real sense of the race or where the riders are in the race other than these audio recordings of the riders phoning in their updates. Many times the riders are talking about "one of the most dangerous things they've ever done" and instead of seeing that we're watching them munch of snacks at a convenience store.
I do a lot of mountain biking and really wanted to like this film but it seems obvious that the filmmakers don't have a clue what they are doing and have produced a very lacklustre YouTube quality video.
