Saint Frances (2019)
ok but strongly slanted politically
Underachieving amoral woman has a mid-life crisis, and becomes a babysitter for a lesbian couple with a bratty child. One of the lesbian duo has just had a baby and is having problems coping because of it. Initial consternation between all parties overcome by many heartwarming scenarios. Although it begs the question of how askew one's personal political philosophy must be if it has to be straightened out by a six year old.
The best part of the movie was a cameo by the dad telling the babysitter to get her oil changed, which caused me to check my own car's schedule and found it to be 500 miles overdue. So this movie definitely had a positive influence upon my life.
Sorry to Bother You (2018)
Strange but thoughly enjoyable
This movie was so strange that I watched it a second time to make sense of it.
The flick had a very unsophisticated feel to it and seemed near moronic at times, but it actually had a lot of subtle humor in it. Very well acted, and the characters were easy to sympathize with. And I'm a sixty something southern white guy.
Reading the reviews, I see that it's not everyone's cup of tea. But I thought it was great.
This movie was modern, but it was a throw back to the crazy movies of the 60's and 70's. Frederico Fellini meets Robert Altman, edited by Melvin Van Peeples. I never heard of this guy Boots Riley, but heres hoping Hollywood throws money at him.
Eagerly awaiting his next offering, and praying he's not a one hit wonder.
Lilies (2007)
good story, funny and touching
I came across this at the small local library near where I live and it had such a high imdb rating that I had to check it out---and I'm glad I did.
Connected stories of a families troubles in England, 1920. It was so well written that you find yourself rooting for the different characters, and their setbacks tug at your emotions. Looking at the film extra's section after I viewed it, I was surprised to see how they made the set because it all seemed so realistic. I never was one for ladies hat's, but whomever picked out the hats for the ladies in this picked out some very flattering ones, and it makes one wonder what happened to hats as a ladies fashion accessory.
The only thing unrealistic about this show is that these people are all supposed to be related but they look so very different from each other.
