On the Waterfront (1954)
A Brando Classic
A lot better than I initially expected it to be (this is coming from someone who has yet to see the Godfather trilogy). The cinematography, the music, and especially the acting are superb here, like with "A Streetcar Named Desire". In this movie, however, Brando's character is much more endearing compared to Stanley, particularly how his Terry struggles with his sense of mortality.
A master class in method acting. 10/10.
Avatar (2009)
Visually stunning but not memorable
"Avatar" (not the Nickelodeon cartoon series!) is a 2009 film directed by James Cameron. While it made tons of money at the box office (only to get beaten by "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019) and, like I have stated in my headline, is gorgeous in its brilliant use of CGI, I was not left feeling impressed with the characters or the plot. I wished Cameron had done more than using the typical cliche of "human helping the poor, downtrodden yet noble savages", because it caused the movie not to be memorable and boring. Despite the fight scenes and the budding romance between Jake and another native, I was checking the runtime to see how many minutes I'll have to finish this.
To be honest, I liked this movie a lot better when I was younger, but nostalgia didn't save it from being a snore fest.
Brave New World (2020)
Awful tv show adaptation of my favorite book
This show completely misses the point of Huxley's message. We don't need a Brave New World through a "modern" lens. In fact, we already achieved (heck if you can call that an achievement. I know the director of this trash would think so) that, even ages ago with the creation of the Internet or the sexual revolution of the 60s for example.
What's next, a "politically correct" tv series version of 1984? Count me out of that, please.
LA 92 (2017)
Powerful and disturbing. A must watch.
LA 92 is a documentary that showcases pure, raw footage of the Los Angeles riots and protests after four white police officers were declared innocent after beating a black man named Rodney King in their custody.
What was especially refreshing about this documentary is that it presented both sides of the issue without bias (no voiceover-just footage and music playing in the background).
My only complaint of it was that the background music got too loud at times and made it difficult to put attention to the film.
Wouldn't recommend LA 92 to people who are squeamish at violence and cursing.
8/10 stars.
Akira (1988)
Intriguing and a one of a kind anime.
Honestly I had a hard time believing that this was made in the late 80s. Like I have stated in my review headline, "Akira" is different from all of the anime I have seen prior. It is thought-provoking yet hard to understand if you're viewing it for the first time, similar to the original Ghost in the Shell.
But this movie is definitely not for everyone. If you can stomach the violence and the cursing (duh, it's rated R for a reason, people!) and able to suck yourself in the engaging plot, then you will like "Akira".
9 out of 10 stars.
The Disaster Artist (2017)
Fascinating biopic of the mysterious "director" named Tommy Wiseau
I wasn't expecting much from this, but I ended up being thoroughly entertained by the events being acted out in the film. I'm glad to say that this was another movie made from the studio A24 that I have liked so far (the first being "Uncut Gems").
Would recommend for people who are interested in the making of the cult film The Room.
10/10 stars.
Taxi Driver (1976)
A Perfect Movie
Jazzy score by Bernard Hermann?
Ambiguous ending?
Intriguing protagonist with a psychological disorder?
Shut up and take my money, Scorsese.
9/10 stars.
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012)
Phenomenal family flick!
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted is by far the best and funniest out of the Madagascar trilogy.
The animation/colors are awesome as always. You can tell the animation crew gave it their all during this production.
The characters and plotline, while outlandish (and hence the reason why my rating is knocked down to a mere 8 stars), are fun and amusing to watch. Even if you turn your brain off and accept what's going on.
Would recommend for the whole family to watch.
8.5/10 stars
Coonskin (1974)
Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover
When I had viewed Coonskin last summer, I had expected it to be offensively racist and tasteless.
But boy was I wrong...
Ralph Bakshi is a master with satire. He had spun the Uncle Remus tales and Disney's Song of The South with an 70s urban twist, exposing how racist they really are.
I will certainly check out more of Bakshi's films, though I am a bit leery of Cool World.
10/10 stars.
