The Power: The Day of the Girls (2023) Season 1, Episode 4

Perfect pacing

For me, the sign of a great episode of television is when I'm pausing every few minutes, scared that the episode might be over soon. I must have paused a dozen times, SURE that the episode must be over soon, only to be delighted that it wasn't. So much of the story advances this episode. Perhaps my favorite yet.

We get to see the true extent of the powers with Eve's healing abilities. We get to see the oppressed overcoming their oppressors, at least temporarily.

I'm happy to see the family dynamics in multiple arcs develop so much. I'm so pleased with the casting in this show, as it's hard to imagine better choices.

I can't wait for next week!

The Trump Prophecy (2018)

Must be a money laundering vehicle

This "movie" is among the least substantive, most pearl-clutchingly vapid pieces of media I've ever seen.

It is devoid of anything meaningful, and appears to only exist as a method of moving money between private parties.

Gleipnir (2020)

Poor execution of a clever idea

I had high hopes, even when almost finished with this show. I really hoped it would come through and surprise me with a meaningful ending, or even a good pausing point hoping for another season. In reality, I was severely disappointed. The body horror and pain porn moments don't earn anything worthwhile in terms of plot or character development. Rather, grief is used to add pretend stakes that don't feel real.

Quite disappointed.

By the Grace of the Gods (2020–2023)

No drama, little conflict, delightful

A cute OP hero makes friends and does good things for 12 episodes. This show is a torrent of feel good scenes to escape into when life is tough. I really enjoyed this show, and while the lack of conflict means that the wins don't feel quite as earned, it also means it's free of contrived drama for drama's sake, and thats an even trade for me.

Watch this if you want to smile for 6 straight hours.

The Queen's Gambit (2020)

The whole is greater than the sum on its parts

This series is a triumph. Beautifully balanced in tension and reward. An imperfect hero on a journey I'm grateful to have watched.

If you are looking for a series that will captivate you from the start, and deliver on its promises, look no further. I can't write more without risking spoilers, and this show is worth watching as blind as you can.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)

A perfect Will Farrell movie

It is exactly the movie you're imagining, but the music is better than you think it will be. It takes a sort of suspension of cynicism to appreciate the Eurovision Song Contest, and once you've done that, you'll find a number of catchy songs. The final number somehow manages to be poignant and wistful while still feeling exactly like a model Eurovision song.

I'm positive I'll watch this movie many more times in the coming years, and all the while I'll be humming along.
