Bride & Prejudice (2004)
Spurious Rubbish
I can't believe how bad this film was and what i can't get over is why so many people seem to like it? The signs were good, Chudda did a good job of Bend It Like Beckham. Perfect mix of east/west and was believable with some sincere performances. Pride and Prejudice is my favourite novel and adapting it within a racial context seems like a really good idea, perfect for modern Asian audiences. Instead what did I see? Songs!! really awful ones's!! An invisible Darcy, not even an inch of the man Colin Firth portrayed in the BBC version. Lalita, oh my god I was cringing at Aish's awful accent and her total inability to act. She should stick with Indian melodrama because the nuance of Elizabeth Bennet's character was too much for her mediocre talents. Anupum did his best but with such a shoddy script it was always going to be hard work! Namrita was also one of the better aspects of the film. Bottom line appalling!!
Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya (2005)
Maine yeh film kyun dehki???!!!
This is truly one of the worst film I have ever seen. The story was rubbish, the script was weak and Katrina Kaif was appalling. She should stick to modelling. Salman was his usual annoying over the top self. What was Sushmita Sen thinking, she's beautiful and talented, this film does not do any justice to her. I was so bored I wanted to cry!!! What is wrong with everyone? Salman brother was mildly amusing i suppose. Were you senses of humour on holiday? The songs were also not very good and 'Just Chill' was the worst. I couldn't believe the end though Katrina just gives him? He goes to Sush? She marries him? Are you all flipping pagal for God's sake? Utter nonsense.
Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006)
Not a bad movie!!!
It is important to judge as a piece of cinema first and foremost. Though the script was weak in certain parts, giving the film a disjointed feel at times, overall it was a worthwhile film to watch. This is supposed to be an examination of marital problems and consequently issues like adultery which stem from it. Life is not all singing and dancing in green fields and I think Karan Johar needs to be applauded for his decision to go mainstream with this theme. At times the film is touching and thoughtful, the development of Maya's and Dev's relationship is most interesting when they are falling in love. However the characters/plot could have been more engaging, this is certainly true. Many people have criticised it for appearing artificial and thus unconvincing, perhaps this was to do with the location and the nature of the characters. There is too much crying (Rani is esp guilty) no doubt about it and more screen time needed to be given for Maya-Rishi's marriage. Nonetheless people should not be put off by those who like to pretend adultery doesn't happen!!
