Star Trek: Bread and Circuses (1968)
One of the Best Episode of the Franchise
I rarely write reviews and had no intention of reviewing this, but the rating it has at present, 7.0 is absurd, so I'll say a few words. This is a clear 9 or 10. From the fight in the arena in which Spock tells his opponent, "I tell you I am well able to defeat you. I do not wish to injure you," to the most exciting beam out in the franchise, in which the Romans futilely fire a hail of machine gun fire into the landing party's fading transporter signal, this episode is moving drama from beginning to end. Did the people who rated it poorly even watch it? The episode also contains an interesting study of the prime directive. The captain and the Enterprise and infinitely stronger than the landing party's captors, but are prevented from acting by the prime directive.
Adventures of Superman: Superman on Earth (1952)
The Beginning of a Great Ride
Everyone knows the Superman inception story. I can watch this episode any number of times and have an emotional reaction every time.
I'm going to sneak in an explanation of why the series is great. It's very low budget and, not surprisingly, for a television show of this era, is very naively written. Yet, it's one of my favorite shows out of the thousand or so I've seen. It presents the Superman story in a very compelling way. It's exciting. It has a great chemistry. I'm 68 years old as I write this and some episodes of the series still have the capacity to make me cry.
Watch this one and watch the others and if your mind is remotely like mine, you'll love it.
The Manhattan Project (1986)
They Have Replaced the Actual History With Fiction
Why did the producers find it necessary to replace the actual history of the Manhattan Project with fiction? The true story was plenty interesting enough for a mini-series.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Absorbing and Fun
I watched the entire mini-series in one day. It was well written and directed. It's sort of a superhero story, the super power being her chess ability. I found it fascinating and immensely enjoyable. Some people think it has political overtones, but I didn't see any of that. Highly recommended.
