Bortført (2021)
Brilliant
Thoroughly enjoyed this, gripping storyline, great acting, gritty realistic insights into Middle Eastern politics, and a fair few unexpected plot twists. Can't believe the negative reviews on here - did we watch the same thing? Must say the English language dubbing was awful so switched it off and enjoyed in the original Hebrew / Norwegian with English subs which makes for a far more authentic experience anyway. Perhaps the negative reviewers watched the dubbed version? The white privilege of the Norwegian mother raging around the Middle East like a bull in a china shop gets annoying and the gun-toting bearded Arab Muslim terrorists a bit tedious, while the complex plot twists and double dealing of the factions requires careful attention. But all in, this series of short snappy episodes delivers a thrilling tale splayed across continents with plausible characters, great acting and some stunning scenic desert shots. Must watch in the original language.
Material (2012)
Absolutely brilliant
Thoroughly enjoyed this from start to finish, completely unexpected! The authenticity of Gujarati Muslim life in the South African diaspora is spot on and will ring so familiar to anybody from a South Asian background. The film is sensitive, nuanced and very well acted - especially the angry rants of the old man. Brilliant unpacking of the intergenerational conflicts between parents and children, especially when the former attempt to impose their rigid and myopic expectations on the latter. But the son is dutiful and respectful and keen to take his family with him as he pursues his dreams. An intelligent film that rings through with authenticity - oh, and a cameo appearance by Zain Bhika! Must watch.
American Son (2019)
Brilliant - and the last words are "I can't breathe!"
This is a must watch in a post George Floyd world. A nuanced, gritty dissection of race, privilege, parenting and policing in contemporary America. The acting is great and dialogue brilliantly scripted and delivered. Gripping and intense throughout, the tension ratchets up to a wrenching final scene. I can't understand those who didn't like it, great concept, performances and delivery. Definitely worth a watch
