Australian Ninja Warrior (2017)
Too much talking
The athletes are incredible, but the commentators are so uncharismatic. If you're a sucker for backstories, most contestants have a several-minute feature before their run. The unique stories are absolutely worth telling, but the rest become repetitive. The amount of talking is too much. Talking about the course, talking about why the contestants want to win, bragging, talking about who's in the crowd, encouraging contestants before the run, analysing how they felt and what went wrong after the run, talking about the upcoming contestants, talking about past contestants, flashbacks, foreshadowing for after the ad break... the list goes on. I find myself fast forwarding all the talking and even then it drags on for so long.
Have You Been Paying Attention? (2013)
Something to look forward to
My family and I love tuning into HYBPA on a Monday night. A hilarious, witty show that doesn't take itself too seriously. Bonus points if you HAVE been paying attention and know the news story they're referencing.
The only reason for the 9 instead of a 10 is that very rarely there will be a boring panel, but the regulars and friends of the show are always great.
The Masked Singer Australia (2019)
Ridiculous
I fail to see the hype and appeal behind this show. Wow, a "celebrity" we haven't heard from in 10 years is singing! But if they sing badly they take their ridiculous costume off! There's no premise, no stakes, and no reason to watch.
How to Stay Married (2018)
A comedic disaster
This show, marketed as "hilarious" and "relatable" is anything but. Unfortunately, rather than laughing along with the dialogue, acting, or ridiculously coincidental plot points, I found myself cringing. The only thing it was missing was a laugh track. While he is an alright stand up comedian, Peter Helliar's performance as an actor is pathetic, bland and un-watchable. Meanwhile, Judith Lucy could only wish she was Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, and Lisa Mccune attempting to hold everything together is this show's closest thing to a saving grace. Everything about the show is one dimensional; How a second season was approved is beyond me.
The Secrets She Keeps (2020)
An unfortunate failure
There are some TV shows that are so bad, they're good. This was not one of them. For a premise with this much potential, the dialogue was so incredibly forced and poorly delivered that it left a lot to be desired. I wanted to have sympathy for the characters, but instead I experienced second-hand embarrassment at the choices made by both the cast and creatives. The plot points were usually ridiculous and unnecessary, as if the producers knew they needed to extend their runtime by inserting a pointless altercation or death that did nothing to drive the characters forward. This is a mediocre student film at best, or a train wreck of a television series at worst.
