White Fang (1997 Video)

Obviously a cheap budget..
1 January 2007
If you'd like to see the movie of the much-adored book then do not waste your money on this one. The Walt Disney version is well worth investing in. This obviously had a very cheap budget. The animation is poor, voice actors bad and the singing is almost painful.

The backgrounds were very skillful and detailed but were destroyed by the badly drawn characters. The movie sticks to the plot but has simplified it for children. I purchased it for a small price and since I'm a great fan of dogs and wolves anyway, I've decided to keep it. But I'm now commenting to warn you of it. It's not as the cover describes.

The songs are of poor quality. I must say, the worst was probably Beauty Smith's. The ending is satisfactory but does not end as the book does which was disappointing. Although Disney's White Fang does differ from the book it is much better quality than this one by far.

Worth watching..
1 January 2007
For a dog-lover, it is a moving and heart-touching story. For any other viewer, it is an old movie that features a bunch of sled dogs and Alaska. You really must read the book by Jack London before seeing the film. It follows the plot but it does confuse matters.

The dog stunts do look very real and do tend do worry you. Fortunatly, you are assured before the movie begins that no animals were harmed in the making of the film. It was good quality for the time period with well-trained animals and nice camera shots. The soundtrack could have been improved but works for the general atmosphere. I was also disappointed by Buck's appearance. He was a German Shepherd mix as described in the book but was presented as a Newfoundland in the film. Curly was also the wrong breed. None of this honestly mattered once the film got started.

It is no match for Disney's White Fang but Call of the Wild does come as its infamous partner.

A heart-warming festive movie...
24 December 2006
Despite what others say, I found this movie very pleasing and much better than I expected. I first watched it surely after it was released in 1998 and loved it first time. Of course, no movie is an good as the original, the characters were not the same but they never can be. However, I still found them funnier than ever.

The plot is based on 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens with the evil - or perhaps not so - bulldog, Carface as the Scrooge, bah-humbug character. Carface and his boss, Annabell's arch enemy, Belladonna conjure an evil plan to ruin Christmas. However, they forget that Charlie, Itchy and Sasha are around. Using Annabell's miracle dog tag Charlie's all set to save the day. But can this miracle dog tag truly create the Christmas Carol story to convince Carface that he's not all bad? Or will Christmas be ruined? A heart-warming, festive movie with lovable characters. Definitely a must-see movie.. not dog-lover would be complete without it.

Poor Ending To The Balto Sequels
24 August 2006
The original Balto was amazing. A much-loved favourite of mine. I also enjoyed Balto II - Wolf Quest. But then came Balto III - Wings of Change. First impressions, poor animation with computer animated elements. None of the characters had their original voices - nor did they even sound like the originals. Whoever thought up Stella the Goose should be sued. She is an unnecessary character who, in my mind, ruins the entire film. I do like Kodi, Balto's son in this film. He is given a lovely character and makes the film actually worth watching. No mention is given to Aleu though? All in all, this is a poor ending to the Balto sequels and was most probably even less popular than poor Balto was originally. An addition to a Balto fans collection but otherwise, do not waste your money.

Balto (1995)

His story became a legend..
24 August 2006
Once again a very over-looked film. It deserved more praise than it received. The true legend of Balto is the story of a series of sled dog teams that relayed anti-toxin from Nenana to Nome in the coldest winter of 1925. By doing this, they saved the children of Nome from the deadly disease of Diptheria. More information about the true story can be found on the special features of this DVD. The film does stay very close to the true story. In the movie, Balto is a wolf/dog hybrid who is treated poorly in the town. Mocked by the purebred dogs such as Steele. His only friend is a Russian snow goose called Boris and a beautiful husky named Jenna. When Jenna's owner, Rosie falls sick along with many other children, a race is set out to find the fastest dogs in Nome. That team will then relay anti-toxin from Nenana to Nome - as in the true story - Balto is determined to help save Rosie and will risk life and limb to do so. An amazing film that I love very much. Perfect for the whole family and those dog/wolf lovers out there.

A truly amazing film..
24 August 2006
A very overlooked film. I saw it on the TV and thought.. wow.. what have I been missing out on? Based on the book by Jack London though not entirely sticking to the storyline. I think that it would have been better if the ending had been how it was in the book. I won't give anything away.. White Fang is a moving story about the lives of a boy, wishing to fulfil his father's dream and an orphaned wolf cub searching for survival. Set within times of the Yukon gold rush. Perhaps not overall suited for young children since there are some disturbing scenes. Not just for wolf/dog fans either. I think that this film should be given a chance. At times, it is tearful others make you want to hug your own dog by your side. Overall, an amazing film that SHOULD NOT be missed!!
