Bob Marley: One Love (2024)
Not a full biography but a good film
Like most suburban white kids born in the 80's I can say I love the music of Bob Marley, the greatest hits that is. I can also say he was a Rastafarian, meaning I thought he really loved smoking weed. So I give my review of this movie based on what I wanted: I wanted to see how this man created such powerful music to make extraordinary changes in those around him and like him, and I wanted to know what made him the man he was to be able to do what he did. I won't say this movie does neither of these things but I feel it only hit on one portion of his career/legacy and didn't do a great job of that. Overall the acting is top notch and by the end you feel an overwhelming since of love for what this man did for music and culture.
Wonka (2023)
Wanted to hate it but I really enjoyed it!
Ok so when I say I wanted to hate it I mean there's been two remakes of this franchise by Burton which I hated. That being said I get Burton has his own style that has made him loads of money and more than a few films I enjoy, these remakes just weren't it for me. But onto this movie! I thought I would hate it because I'm not a fan of musicals or introduction movies where there's no real need for it...but this movie really does win you over! The acting from stars to minor characters is incredible, the scenery, music, singing, and sets are amazing as well. I could say some negative things because I don't believe in a perfect movie but they are so little it doesn't make you regret enjoying this film. As always I hope this review helps and you enjoy the film!
The Winter King (2023)
Did you read the books: if yes I doubt you'll like it. Never read the books: probably won't hate it but doubt you'll like it.
So I love anything that has to do with King Arthur and Bernard Cornwell is one of my favorite writers so to have him do an Arthurian book series was awesome!! I love the tv version of "The Last Kingdom" by him and was really hoping this would be similar but sadly it's not even close. The creators/writers of the show either never read the books or decided to just ignore them entirely. I've watched all 5 episodes to air and every one makes me more disappointed in what could've been a great show. Outside of the fact it's very different from the books the acting, writing, casting, and overall production is just bad. Only gave it a 5 cause I love the legend and original books so much.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
Not bad considering the original was only a chapter at best
Ok so first of all this movie is really well made! The set, score, CGI, acting etc are very well done. Will some people hate that it's "too stupid" or "wow, they deserved to die"...sadly yes. But it's literally based on a serial novel from the 1800's. How else do you expect Dracula to be Dracula if he didn't get to England on this ship!!? Could the crew have abandoned and set for ANY port or just abandoned ship, YES!! But that's not the story and if that happened I bet there would be 10x as many bad reviews because the characters did the smart thing. I love movies and discussing plot holes of what could've worked better/worse but to read the reviews of some many people on this website that just either don't get what a movie is for(entertaining you and letting you escape the world) or just want to yell and degrade the dumbest of things makes me sad. If you made it this far I apologize for my rant and the movie is really good and I hope you enjoy it too.
Knock at the Cabin (2023)
Great acting, strong story, but no major twist.
Based on a good book and the adaptation to the big screen was pretty good in my opinion. I have always enjoyed this director and his films, yes I agree some are better than others and for the most part you expect the "big surprise ending", but this was a very serene yet extremely suspenseful and emotional film. Personally I believe every actor/actress is what made this film great though. Each person was incredibly believable and I could either imagine myself being in their shoes or feeling the emotion that person was trying to portray on screen. Overall it's a very good film that is made better by superb acting plus an amazing musical score.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010)
SO SAD THIS ISN'T MORE WELL KNOWN!!!
There isn't much I can say about this film other than just find a way to watch it!! Great comedy film that may seem like a spoof of other horror movies but honestly it's just a hilarious film. Yes it does take the "backwoods or hillbilly bad guy" and make it seem like it's a movie from the bad guy perspective but that's just the trailer. The college kids are perfectly cast and the actors/actresses play them brilliantly but the true stars are Tyler Labine and Alan Tudyk, yes that guy that's been in everything and been won of the best side character actors of the last 25 years. Ok so I got to keep writing to hit the limit to write a review so in short; just watch it!
American History X (1998)
Black and white/color for a reason
This is in my opinion one of the best films in the last 50 years. The story, acting, directing etc are superb. The movie transitions between color and black and white perfectly for the script. There isn't a single scene, minus the end, where what happens is a good thing; however this film gives you what you hate to see while giving you what you expect. There isn't much more I can say about this movie or it's cast other than bravo and thank you for having the guts to do this film. I can't think of more to say about how much I like this film but I have to keep adding words to make the quota to make a review.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Not sure how this fits into the new MCU but I enjoyed it
Overall a very entertaining and funny film. Good action sequences, good story, great soundtrack and effects, and genuinely a fun movie. While I loved the Mighty Thor as Jane Foster I was sad to see it done in such a quick fashion but I understand there's only so much you can do. Valkyrie could have been more involved but she was given great dialogue and still remained a great onscreen force. Only negative was the poor choice of accent by Russell Crowe as Zeus and me not quite understanding how this movie furthers the new stage of MCU, but the end credit scene was very well done and a great send off/in remembrance of a beloved character.
Prey (2022)
Very impressed!
I say I'm impressed because I love the original Predator but this movie was a great addition to the franchise. I know some people are upset that a small female role was able to do what Arnold did but that's their opinion. I think that the story, direction, and especially the cinematography were great!! Of course if you look hard enough you'll find plot holes or minor errors, but it's a movie about an alien race of super hunters so let's give the film a few breaks! I honestly hope this can revitalize the franchise like I was hoping Predators could have done.
The Terminal List (2022)
One flaw in episode one made me turn it off...but I turned it back on and loved it
Ok so far I like the writing, the acting has been very good, and I'm very interested in how the story expands. That being said I'm very worried it won't end well...because of a major oversight by the production team. When the main character is attacked in MRI room by men with guns and a knife, it just makes me feel like a very simple thing like MAGNETIC resonance imaging is overlooked. I know I know!! It's stupid to judge based on one oversight; HOWEVER, when the door to the MRI machine is opened it has a huge red sign that says "MAGNET ALWAYS ON"...that being said(from my lofty pedestal lol) the rest of the show is very entertaining.
Wrath of Man (2021)
If you're on the fence about Guy Richie then give this a try
I personally love Ritchie's films and enjoyed this one immensely. However, it's not his normal style of film, it's a little darker and more driven than previous works. Great acting by the entire cast and excellent story that personally kept me involved from beginning to end.
The Gray Man (2022)
Way overboard but in a good way
This is not a Marvel movie nor is it by Michael Bay to my knowledge but it's action scenes are just as crazy and unbelievable. Not a bad story, in fact it's somewhat believable, and the actioning(my term for action acting) is enjoyable. Just go into this movie knowing it's WAY over the top and enjoy it. If you're looking for a good plot or Oscar winning performance then I recommend you skip it, otherwise enjoy the show cause it's pretty entertaining.
Bill Burr Presents: Friends Who Kill (2022)
Funny people not always funny delivery
All the people are great comedic writers(just look them up and see their work) but that doesn't mean they are all great at telling the jokes they wrote. Overall, very very funny material but any bad reviews are because they didn't like who said the jokes, or can't understand that "woke" comedy is a new style(not my favorite but still funny)
Cursed (2020)
Maybe not your King Arthur but give it a try
So I can see why some people are upset by this telling of an age old story but come on, there's been a hundred additions and changes to the Arthurian legend over the years. Overall it's not the style and telling I grew up with but if it gets a new generation to continue enjoying a great legend then I'm for it! Story is decent, acting is believable and compelling, and style is clean and well done.
