Fight Club (1999)
Greatest film of all time...
Fight club is one of those films you could watch 50 times and you'd still be picking up things you didn't notice the first 49 times. There are so many layers to this film, and I must say... they're good layers.
The story is a masterpiece, the acting is sublime, the cinematography is as good as it gets and the writing is just plain magic.
If you don't already know the story of Fight Club, then you're in for a real treat.
This is undoubtedly the best film I have ever watched and I would definitely recommend this to anyone and everyone. It's extremely cleverly written and the production more than matched the level of writing. I'm so glad this film fulfilled its potential.
Sorry if this review is a bit of a jumbled mess, but I just can't say enough about how good it is. Just see for yourself.
I wish I could watch it for the first time again.
Blade Runner (1982)
They made a short film seem like a very long one
I don't know what people see in this film.
From what I can tell after reading other reviews, 'Blade Runner' has earned its spot as the most overrated film of all time from nostalgic old men watching an old 'classic' and feeling the emotions they felt when watching it for the first time. Sure, it may have been good back in the day. But as far as filmmaking is concerned nowadays, it's nothing special.
This film, in my opinion, tries too hard to be unique, and instead, ends up as a weird and not so wonderful mess. The story just doesn't make much sense, and it fails to answer questions that shouldn't even need to be asked. The poor choice of music and unnecessary scenes also make the film feel twice as long as it is.
I definitely wouldn't recommend watching, unless you're watching it "20 years later and it's still better than the rest" (it definitely isn't).
This film could have easily been an hour shorter and it would have been much better. It would have spared me an hour of my life and it wouldn't have had any of those filler scenes that don't hold any real content.
Turning Red (2022)
Didn't do it for me
I found most of the characters (bar the father and grandfather) to be unlikeable, irritating and over emotional, which really didn't make me feel any sort of connection to the characters (something this film really needed).
The characters had the boundless energy of a Disney Princess which didn't help their cause (as it just meant they had plenty of energy to be annoying all day).
There were a few entertaining scenes, but I certainly wouldn't recommend watching this if you are easily annoyed, or in an irritable mood.
The mother was infuriating (I know that's what they were aiming for but they overdid it in my opinion).
The music was good though.
The Cold (2020)
Underrated
Undoubtedly the best short film I've ever watched!
For a low budget film, the production quality was great. Heck, for a high budget film, the acting still wouldn't have looked out of place. The setting fits the story perfectly and gives a great sense of pathetic fallacy, the camera work feels like it's out of a Hollywood blockbuster, and the acting is equally as good. I was hooked the whole way through.
It's a shame that low budget gems like these don't get the acclaim they deserve.
If you want to give it the watch it deserves, then I believe you can find it on YouTube - Face Fiction.
The Willoughbys (2020)
Overrated
I personally didn't enjoy it, although I can see the appeal. In my opinion it didn't warrant the reviews it's received, as I found only a few scenes to be mildly amusing, while the rest of the jokes seemed to be aimed at a younger audience... or maybe they just weren't very funny.
I wouldn't recommend watching unless you're watching it in the background with younger children.
