Gladiator (2000)
More than an action film, more than an historical spectacle.
This film is a must see for all lovers of cinema. Tightly scripted the characters come to life - you sense the actors have become the characters they portray.
The opening battle sequence is one of the best brought to the screen and I have seen Olivier's "Henry V", Kirk Douglas's "Spartacus" and Mel Gibson's "Braveheart".
Ridley Scott's direction, not only captures the huge scope of the canvas, he has developed the personalities of the characters and permitted them to 'breathe' and become believable, depicting a range human qualities and deficiencies.
Russell Crowe's performance is so dominant (worthy of the "Oscar") one cannot imagine any other actor in the role. Joaquin Pheonix truly establishes himself as a fine actor and Connie Neilson, Richard Harris, Derek Jacobi and Oliver Reed cannot be faulted.
I would recommend this film for anyone who loves a strong story line, fine acting and an appreciation of the cinematic art. You could not be disappointed with this film
Ben-Hur (1959)
First class film - one of the best.
I saw 'Ben Hur' when I was 15 years of age and was amazed at the wonderful structure of the film. The acting by all, (how unfortunate Stephen Boyd was to miss out on 'Best supporting Actor') the majesty of the Music by Miklos Rosza, the beauty of the photography, the magnificence of the sets and the strong story line make this one of the best films of all time. Whilst 'Titanic" equaled the total of 'Oscars' won, that film did not win any for acting. Although there have been many advances in the technological sphere over the years, the presentation of this film is still amongst the best. One wonders just what the outcome may have been if computer technology had been utilized.
Male of the Species (1969)
First class mini series
A wonderful mini series with fine acting all round. Memorable performances from Connery, Caine and Schofield. The film covers a range of a females encounters with the 'Male of the Species' in the persons of her Father, boy friend and an older suitor. There have been a many fine mini series over the years which have been repeated, however, this one was an outstanding piece of work and seem to have disappeared. I sincerely trust that it has not been lost for it is of exceptional quality. There are so many light weight 'efforts' around at this time it would be a change to re-visit this drama. I saw it many years ago and would really appreciate the opportunity of obtaining DVD.
