The Jerky Boys (1995)
Funny Enough
This was bottom of the barrel cinema when it came out. Its not anything you should really have high expectations for when you start into it. That being said, compared to the bottom of the comedy barrel these days this movie is a worthwhile and entertaining entry.
The supporting cast actually isn't too bad. Other reviewers have questioned the appearance of Alan Arkin in this film, and maybe it is weird, but whatever he's in it. So is Vincent Pastore ("Big Pussy" Bonpensiero from "The Sopranos") and cameos from Tom Jones and Ozzy Osbourne (a particularly rare depiction of him when he still had some vital essence left and decked out in appropriate mid-90's high fashion.)
Speaking of the the mid-90's, there's a lot of great footage of New York City in the years right before Giulianni started cleaning the place up.
Anyways, the movie is funny. Its not the funniest movie ever, but the ad hominem attacks, creative profanity, and silly voices will make you laugh. Its nice to see their skits made into live action, even though the real genius of their humor on their tapes was that the calls were real and the calls in the movie are scripted.
Its a solid B-grade comedy. If you're expecting more, you have the wrong idea.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Cat and Mouse (2010)
Trench should have at least been a three parter.
The thing that bothers me so much about this show is how utterly incompetent the bad guys always are. If the Separatists were really that bad at fighting wars the Clone Wars would have lasted a few days. Why doesn't the Republic lose every once in a while? Since there over a hundred episodes, they could afford to have one episode a year where the Republic loses, without making the show depressing or calling little kid's beliefs into question too much. Even in Pokemon, Ash makes it to the Pokemon championship and loses.
Anyways, Admiral Trench was a good character, they should have let him develop a little more before killing him off.
Also, why do they treat General Grievous with such fear? He NEVER wins, and always runs away. He's only killed that one Mon Calamari padawan so far.
Homeland (2011)
Were we watching the same show?
There isn't one interesting character in this entire show if you ask me. Being a brave soldier, a super smart spy/intelligence officer, a brave young woman challenging a patriarchal society, a middle eastern revolutionary, or a the loving wife of a brave soldier are not things I can say I was particularly curious about or interested in. Im sure there's plenty of people who are though, because this is a popular show.
I'd suggest watching Treme, Breaking Bad, or Boss if you want to see a good drama on TV right now. If you liked 24 or CSI or Law and Order Im sure you will really dig this though.
Boss (2011)
Not to Be Compared to Other Shows
I wanted to write this review to respond to all the people saying this show is as good or better than "The Wire." While I do like this show, and find it really compelling, its not worth comparing it to "The Wire." They're about totally different things, and take completely different approaches when it comes to story telling.
There's no D'Angelo Barksdale, Kima Greggs, Omar, or Lester Freamon in "Boss" but there's no one as tyrannical and at the same time sympathetic as Tom Kane in "The Wire."
I personally don't think this show is quite as good as "The Wire." There's really only one character that's a grand-slam, and that's Tom Kane. The auxiliary characters are all pretty two dimensional.
Its only 8 hours though, and even with a second season I doubt it will be more than 20, so its quite a bargain compared to "The Wire" which can eat up an entire year of your life, or more if you re-watch it.
I would recommend this show to anyone who likes a good bad guy. If you cheered for Darth Vader, or if you thought Lex Luthor was far more interesting than Superman, this is the show for you. In a world where we are constantly force-fed totally unbelievable happy endings, this is a nice dose of well-crafted ugliness.
