Good Bye Lenin! (2003)
a FANTASTIC film
I saw this film today, and would happily see it a few more times. It was full of stuff and so wonderful that I'll be constantly thinking about moments and seeing more into all of them for days to come.
I love German movies, being a German student, and I found the German was quite clear a lot of the time. There were several missing subtitles, but I could get the gist of what was being said anyway.
There are some classic moments in this film that are very memorable, and others that build up the tension incredibly. One such example being that of the "Go West" blimp (I won't say any more for fear of spoiling such a moment!)
I wouldn't place this movie under the comedy genre, unless it was ironical comedy, or satire, merely because comedy is a genre that immediately brings tacky humour and shallowness to mind (well mine at least). This movie is a political irony possibly, and is in no way shallow or tacky.
See the movie, it is worth it and will teach everyone a lot about the differences between the DDR and the GDR, and the opinions of people who were strongly attached to the Socialist regime.
I say again, SEE THIS MOVIE, whether you find it boring or whatever, you are bound to get something out of it....
The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
Not perfect...
...and nowhere near, but what is?! I found Matrix Revolutions enjoyable enough, although I found it left a lot of unclosed issues, and it didn't have the freshosity of the 1st and 2nd.
Of course not everyone will like it, but it's worth watching to make up your own mind.
I found it a little slow, and I found Mary Alice as the Oracle a little annoying, but she had a tough role to play, succeeding the glorious Gloria Foster.
Matrix Revolutions was not a disappointment, although I had prepared myself for anything, but it did not have the same enthusiasm as the first or second. I found the action a little overdone (I'm not saying it wasn't speccy though), and some parts a little too Star Wars like.
The end was a little predictable - it was the only way it could be solved if the brothers were to keep on following the religious lines they have been through the movies, but I was left a little confused as to the EXACT significance of the little girl, Sati (or Saki..?)
Anyway, it wasn't too bad as a piece of entertaining film, and I do urge you to make up your own mind about it, and try to go into it with an open mind. DO NOT JUDGE IT BY WHAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE SAID - each to their own (as they say), and everyone will have a different opinion, so make up your own!
Ice Age (2002)
I was amazed at the amount of movies that had bits taken from them for this...
This movie was filled with things from other kids movies - there were hints of Shrek, Pochahontas, Jungle Boy and squillions of others. I kept on expecting to see a mermaid pop up or a genie pop from a lamp.
Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and think it is suitable for ALL ages - designed for little kids, but watchable by older people too. I was laughing the whole way through. It may require a mental age of four, but most people have that so most people should enjoy it!!
The Wedding Planner (2001)
TERRIBLE!!!
Some people may enjoy this film, but I thought it was incredibly boring. Generally I enjoy the movies I pay to see, but this was a bad one. It wasn't only because there was the most used plot (when that surfaced which was a very rare occurance). Nothing interesting happened, and for the first time in my memory, I was mislead by an ad.
Some people may enjoy this, but be warned, it isn't brilliant and you may want a very large cup of coffee to help you stay awake, but I know that I walked out at the end wondering (a) how I managed to stay until the end without walking out, and (b) what ever urged me to go??
I Was a Sixth Grade Alien (1999)
S*#T, but quite funny.
This is such a dodgey program, it's almost funny. The "special effects" are so great, you can even see the strings holding the "floating" objects up. I'm talking about the episode in which Plaskitt decides to go space traveling to the planet "Heavy heavy." Don't worry everything turns out okay.
The receptionists (?) hair is pretty amazing and that is about the only good thing about the whole show.
If you really want a laugh (but you have to be getting pretty desperate) tune into this terrible program. There probably are worse shows out there, but you would have to look pretty hard to find them!
Avoid this unless you are REALLY desperate for a laugh, and don't blame me for the consequences if you do - signs of a bad reaction are laughter at even the weakest jokes, an addiction to kids television programs - going so far that you would record episodes when you are out and the worst, most serious one (you should go to a doctor if you get this one!) an urge to paint yourself purple or become best friends with the alien next door (be careful, this could be dangerous for you and the alien).
Looking for Alibrandi (2000)
Finally a decent "love story" with a twist of multiculturism
I don't usually like "love stories" but having read the book and having enjoyed the book, I went along to this movie. Being an Aussie movie was also a highlight for me because I am used to trashy American sop stories. I knew this movie was good because even the meanest movie reveiwers enjoyed it. I came out of it and felt like jumping with joy because FINALLY some movie makers had made a realistic "love tale"!
The fact that the movie also deals with racism, and all those other "isms" (ageism, sexism and so on) raised it up a notch for me. It was THE best Aussie movie I saw that year and probably even just the best movie.
I don't know if everyone would enjoy it, but I think most people would get something out of it.
Merlin (1998)
Doesn't matter if you don't see it all
I only saw the last hour of this and I still understood it all even though I only had a rudimentary knowledge of the story. I had to ask my friend who the characters were, but I managed to pick it up. I thought it was very well done, although there were some bits which could have been done a little bit better. I was pleased to see an actor who has been in quite a few "big" movies take this on (Sam Neill). I often find that they get small time actors to do these sort of movies which barely anyone will here of because it doesn't go on the big screen. Quite a good movie, although I imagine it would be even better if you saw it from the beginning!
Go Trabi Go (1991)
A movie which everyone genuinely enjoyed
We watched this in our german class and although it had the teacher running for the fast forward during the Nudist beach bit, we all really enjoyed it. I think it was one of the first times I have ever seen some of the guys in our class want to watch a movie because they like it, not just so they get out of doing some hard work. It is about a family who travels from old East Germany (?) to Rome in their little Trabi(named Georgie)following the notebook of a famous explorer. A lot of things happen to them but they eventually get to Rome. It is worth seeing and is a real feel-good movie.
