Showdown in Yesteryear (2023)
Don't miss this Showdown!
Caught the World Premiere for "Showdown In Yesteryear" during block 7 of Buffalo Dreams Fantastic Film Festival in August 2022. The filmmakers delivered an engaging, fun, classic Western delight! The music by Brandon Hawley was majestic, perhaps one of the most rousing and well integrated into a film that I've seen in many years! The characters well drawn, and I especially enjoyed the performances by Vernon Wells as Orson Kane, and Jeff Grennell as Daryl Dumwoody. The cinematography was absolutely gorgeous, catching the old West perfectly. This film was an expansion on a terrific short from a few years ago "The Door", and expertly grew from its interesting premise. The writing & story overall was superb, and special kudos to Gregory Lamberson and Tim O'Hearn for that. Let's not forget Aaron Bratcher's crisp direction, that also allowed scenes room to breathe. Our audience was completely captivated, and appreciated many of the nods/easter eggs too. Tip of the cowboy hat to ALL involved 👏
Mr. March (2022)
One appointment you'll want to keep!
MR. MARCH was the opening short for Block 4 of the Buffalo Dreams Fantastic Film Festival on Friday, August 19th, and I very much enjoyed it! Clever. Good pacing. Well executed. Smartly written. Strong performances. Usually you don't see this perfect combination in shorts, and when you do it's memorable. I'd frankly love to see a future feature film exploring the world of Calendar Men. Well done by all involved!
The Marshmallow Mystery Tour (2021)
Peeling back the wrappers!
This past Saturday 8/20 at Buffalo Dreams Fantastic Film Festival I discovered Block 5's "The Marshmallow Mystery Tour". Now it's in the running for surprise treat of the Festival for me.
Edgy, quick witted, and it creates a clever juxtaposition of what we want(ed) as we grow up vs. The dirty realities behind many of those "pleasures". Whenever a film can make people belly laugh & smile one moment then think seriously the next/or at the sametime(!) it's an applaudable achievement. Well done!!
Mask of the Devil (2022)
Time to mask up!
Just caught MASK OF THE DEVIL during Buffalo Dreams Fantastic Film Festival on Sunday, August 21st, during Block 11. Clearly proves that Richard Rowntree -and his team- knows how to deliver WTF horror throwback fans want! Funny moments galore, mixed with plenty of slasher insanity, and considering most of the chaos is centered on a porn film set, it's amazing that without tons of explicit nudity, we all got the points. While the plot is pretty straightforward, the effects, atmosphere, and visuals shine.
Among the characters I have to say soundman Mike, played by Martin W. Payne, stole the show with his sleazy snark. Our audience really enjoyed all the nods to other films and horror checkpoints. Would poor Mary become a capable fluffer? Would a Small Table lead to bigger Tables? When would Mike get his? Could anyone escape from the bloodshed? Is this what the world of film making is like? While we probably know those answers all along, overall getting there is a bloody good time.
Luz (2019)
Prepare to be amazed and challenged by LUZ: The Flower of Evil
Caught LUZ at the Buffalo Dreams Fantastic Film Festival. I went into it hoping my most anticipated movie of the Festival would make the wait worth it. To say it did so is a vast understatement!! This movie is simply unbelievable. Some people won't like it. Some people will argue endlessly about all the possibilities and concepts raised. Me- I'm absolutely mesmerized by LUZ. Easily one of the most beautiful films, frame after frame after frame, that I've ever seen. Certainly one which is interested in weighty questions that have no true answers, except for what we make of them, and our world. I said it after the screening, I see lots of Terrence Malick in this incredible film, and Stanley Kubrick too. Amidst the gorgeous imagery, there are also scenes of savage brutality that tear right into the ideas & beliefs being explored. This is why I attend these Festivals! Thank you to director Juan Diego Escobar Alzate, and the whole team responsible for bring LUZ to life! Don't miss this one!!
