Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd (2003)
If you ignore the main characters it's ok.
This movie has badly aged jokes that I don't think were funny 20 years ago.
The main characters, Harry and Lloyd, the reasons to watch the original film, are uninteresting and just offensive in the most boring way. They're meant to be loveably dumb but it just comes off as knowingly ignorant. If you ignore them and most of their side of the story, the movie is ok. The side characters are way more interesting and funny, which isn't saying a lot.
The story could be great. Two not-so-bright boys accidentally uncover a money scam that they are pawns in. Add cliches like a nosey reporter, punk bully, concussed football player and some other lazy students taking advantage of said scam run by the school principal and lunch lady and bam interesting movie.
The writing, especially the jokes is where this movie is let down. It felt like an extended bad SNL skit at times but not like the movies based on SNL skits. Most were just in poor taste.
They could make the normal dumb and dumber jokes and keep the fake special needs class storyline but get rid of the excessive jokes about special needs. It felt like they were making fun of special needs kids instead of Harry and Lloyd.
Also racist jokes. There's a character literally referred to as Ching Chong for most of the movie before she reveals she speaks English.
And the poop jokes. To much focus on human excrement.
Maybe just get better writers.
This wasn't a terrible movie. Definitely not the worst. I've watched it once all the way through and a second time skipping to all the times Turk was on screen.
I enjoyed the reporter vs principal and lunch lady story. And of course, Turk who was somehow one of the least offensive characters despite being the literal bully.
I'd say put this on if you need background noise or are having a bad movie watch party.
Dream a Little Dream 2 (1995)
Disconnected but not bad
I feel like people are harsh on this movie because it barely relates to the first.
Is this a bad movie? No. Is it a cringe movie? Yeah, I guess but I've watched a lot of cringe movies and this was ok. I even got a few genuine chuckles out of it.
Now am I saying this is the best movie ever? No, it's not amazing. Not really related to the first apart from (technically) 3 characters. It's a more light-hearted movie but still tries to be more... Grown-up? I guess.
If I were to describe what it felt like, I'd say... It's like an SNL skit where they tried to make a fake sequel with multiple genres, including sitcom, romance and spy movies. And somehow this movie made more sense than the first one.
Probably better off watching this pretending it's a stand-alone film. Because once you get past the feeling of "these are meant to be the same characters?" It's quite enjoyable.
Not any of the cast's best work but it looks like it was a lot more fun than the first movie.
Overall I'd say it's worth watching at least once, as long as you don't mind questioning everything while watching.
