Ra.One (2011)
Too much publicity at times mean no faith in movie content.
ACTING no doubt is one of the weak points of this movie. And SRK is no exception here. I 'was' an SRK fan at one point. I enjoyed his performances in likes of Devdas, Chak De India, Swades, even Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (some parts), to name a few. But he has changed, or maybe just he needs a director who would be able to squeeze out his true potential which is hidden somewhere deep. Its his home production movie, and his acting shows that he was the boss on the sets, not the director. His acting lacked impact!
He had a better South Indian accent in a comic part of Om Shanti Om. In this movie, he seemed like trying hard to fit in, and failing. He has this natural ability to provide stand out performances in emotional scenes. But here, people didn't seem to care much for him when his character 'Shekhar' died at the hands of Ra. One. Another fail! I could go on and on about other scenes too, but I think I've proved my point.
About STORY, most people are wrong when they blame the story. I think the story was good. However I have a problem with the story-telling. The way they went about its execution seemed so childish, like they were either rushing through things, or slowing it down entirely, dragging the scenes (Bad EDITING).
When it comes to ACTION, I would say 50-50, some cool action sequences, some really repetitive and boring ones. Some scenes just seemed like they were having photo-shoot for SRK, rather than making him fight (the train scene showing SRK spinning for no reason so many times). The climax between G. One and Ra. One was supposed to provide the best action sequence of the movie, instead it was mostly those guys throwing fireballs at each other.
COMEDY was average, cheap adult jokes. Satish Shah was wasted. But they did present it as one of the movie's main genres.
Cameo of Rajnikanth was unexpected and yes, it worked. Wish they had shown more of it, yes. That being said, Chitti vs G.One? Chitti wins (not because of their abilities) because he acted like a Robot, SRK seemed more human as G. One (Can't help with his expressions can he? lol).
MUSIC was partly good. Two hit songs in a movie do play a part in its success.
Anubhav Sinha (CASH) was not an able enough director for this big project. Poor choice there.
The biggest plus in this movie was its visual effects. A landmark in Indian Cinema, true, but only for that reason. Sadly, effects alone don't make a good movie.
Ra. One as a movie isn't actually that bad. It is good and enjoyable, but only for kids.
I give it a 5.5/10. One time watch, just for its cool effects.
Note: For those who still haven't watched it, no use watching in 3D, it won't add to your experience since none of the scenes are 3D worthy.
Love Story 2050 (2008)
MOVIE ABOUT SCENERIES n SPECIAL EFFECTS.. n nothing else!!
Could have been much better, but d terrible acting, unnecessary characters, bad direction, poor or rather 'no editing', length(abt 3hrs 20mins) etc let it down!! Harry Baweja tries to do a Rakesh Roshan by directing this movie featuring his son Harman Baweja, who, nonetheless tries to do a Hrithik by adapting to his style, looks, dance etc. only failing in what matters the most, i.e., 'ACTING'. His dialogue delivery is painful which is understandable since its his debut, but then again, Hrithik did put up a good performance in his debut.
But this movie is lot more than that. The special effects are good(in fact great for a Bollywood movie), but they don't stop the movie from being boring. No wonder big money being wasted in this flick. Then there are unnecessary characters like Karan's(Harman) father, his 3 useless friends, and the two kids (who don't help the storyline at any moment). The songs are OK!! The shooting locations(in the first half) are great. Futuristic assumptions for the year 2050(in Mumbai), is fairy tale type. Mind you the robots Q.T and teddy, were really really annoying. And the movie as a whole was too explanatory, I mean, it seemed as if they expected the moviegoers to be the dumbest beings alive. Priyanka Chopra will make the producers believe that she'll act in any movie that sounds interesting and stupid at the same time. Her acting suffers big time as well. The whole masked villain or Darth Vader's act is kiddy like.
This movie does seem to be made only for the preteens and expects its target audience to be the same. It could well be stated as a landmark in Indian cinema but that will only be for its special effects which will encourage bollywood film-makers to make 'good' sci-fi movies from now on. Although this movie has its moments, but definitely not recommended!!
