Some Kind of Hate (2015)

Bullies I hate you!

Some Kind os Hate is a clear example of I want to and I can't. An example of I have the idea but either I lack the resources and/or talent to carry it out in a worthy way. It is an example of good script, weak casting (although it doesn't help that I have seen it in such a poor Spanish dubbed version) and a direction that stays between two waters, those of the mystery and those of the slasher without getting clear at any time, making the plot insipid and drowning in that sea of doubts.

The bullying theme is not taken too seriously when it should be its main weapon.

The good: The short length and some bloody scenes.

The bad: It's forgotten as soon as it's over.

The Nun (2018)

Horror without fear!?

It is difficult for a film to succeed without a good script and unfortunately here the script is simple and insipid, without twists, totally linear. And this is not saved by the promising director (Corin Hardy) or two great actors like Taissa Farmiga in her role of naive novice and Demién Bichir as the priest back from everything. And they are not helped by that third character who is so artificial, the typical french gallant who should have a more important dramatic charge for reasons that cannot be revealed.

All the scares, or rather attempts at scares, are based on the circular tracking shot of the character to be scared and the blurring of the background.

I think many of its problems come from wasted scenery and a rather poor editing.

Good points: Taissa Farmiga and the cinematography.

Bad Points: Everything there is.

Naked Lust (2009 TV Movie)

Rock and Roll and Softcore

The film gives what is expected of it, a rather weak script, but with three beauties who give the best of themselves, such as: Kaylani Lei who plays rocker Cherry Pop in search of inspiration, love and sex, lots of sex.

Leigh Livingston who plays the reporter Rachel who records the process and sometimes catches poor Cherry Pop in the middle of sex (although she makes up for it with a lesbian scene in the shower with Kaylani herself that is the best of the film).

And finally the blonde bombshell-bimbo Brynn Tyler playing Kitty Kat, the rival who wants to take Cherry's place, although she doesn't even know it.

Along with them four hunks that will delight muscle lovers.

The Conference (2023)

Severance (2006) on the cheap.

It doesn't deliver what one expects.

When you make a film that combines such disparate genres as horror and comedy it is normal to fall short in one of them, well, in the case of The Conference it falls short in both. There is neither horror nor humor. What we are left with is a film that at times takes itself too little seriously, and at times takes itself too seriously, leaving the viewer orphaned as to what to appreciate or not.

The beautiful landscapes and some violent deaths stand out.

The cast is very uneven, as is the script.

I hope the book it's based on is better and at least makes us smile a little if nothing else.

Shenandoah (1965)

God, Family and Love

James Stewart delivers a nuanced and impressively powerful performance in Shenandoah, accompanied by a privileged cast.

Director Andrew V. McLaglen - of whom I had only seen The Way West (1967), a good but not excellent film - takes us to the end of the American Civil War. The family, whose patriarch (in a totally noble sense of the word) Charlie Anderson, a widower and father of a large family, with only one daughter among so many men, try to lead a neutral life, they don't want war, neither for the Confederate nor for the Unitarian side. They only want to live by working their land and being God-fearing, God-loving citizens.

But the war finds them in the end. I will not narrate anything about the plot, just say that the message, at least to me, is one hundred percent anti-war, Christian and full of love. A great film, somewhat underrated compared to other westerns of the time and that is still as relevant today as when it was made.

Savage Spirit (2006 Video)

What I have just seen can be categorized as "one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life".... I've fast forwarded so many times and it still took forever. A Zero is too much of an award for this amateur film (amateur in a pejorative sense, because there are dozens of films made without a dolar that deserve my greatest respect). So the only thing I can think of that I can save is some of the actresses in bikinis, yeah is sad but true. The rest is not saved neither the performances nor the story, nor the photography, absolutely nothing. And on top of that it lasts almost 90 minutes. A nonsense!

Emelie (2015)

Danger! Babysitter inside the property

What a joy it is to come across this kind of jewels. Because yes, Emelie is a very well polished jewel, pulled off with mastery both by the direction and by the four protagonists (the parents do not stand out so much).

I am Italian-Spanish and in this Mediterranean area we are not used to nannies, so it is strange to see how in Anglo-Saxon countries are able to leave their children in the hands of a person without blood relationship or a person close to it. That in itself, at least in my case, scares and if you find the (not so) sweet Sarah Bolger on top of it, it's the apotheosis. I love the rhythm of the film, in which it seems that nothing much happens while a perfect storm is unleashed.

The Green Inferno (2013)

Waiting for the next plate of raw food

Eli Roth is a director whose style is evolving, reaching a more refined level. In his beginnings he was much more direct and dirty, if I may say so, which has its advantages, because he gave you what you were looking for, a no-holds-barred gore, which sometimes turned into real fun-fests, but at other times became excessively repetitive and flat. This level up helps to cover up what for me, is his biggest Achilles heel, his limited level as a dialogue writer, which still hasn't improved. Focusing on The Green Inferno, we have a clear homage to the Italian cannibal cinema of the 70s and 80s. If you're familiar with Cannibal Holocaust or Cannibal Ferox and liked them, you'll surely love Green Inferno, but if you disliked those, I don't think this is the film for you. Because let's face it, when you're about to see a film whose plot is cannibalism in the Amazon, well, Roth isn't fooling you. He may offer it to you in smaller quantities than you expected and yet it's still more substantial than the average level of horror today. Perhaps what most sets him apart from the older films is that first part of the film with a social critique never before seen in Roth's filmography. The presentation of the characters, both activists and indigenous and their interpretations are more than correct. You get to empathize with some of them, which may not be very pleasant when you know what awaits them... The music by Manuel Riveiro is a success, as well as the photography by Antonio Quercia and the FX by Ozzy Alvarez.

Because let's not fool ourselves, hell may be green, but its smell is red.

The Chase (1966)

The hypocritical pack

A town in the southern United States is presented as a kind of microcosm in which hypocrisy, class struggle, lust, the cult of power and money, jealousy, but also dignity, common to all societies, coexist. As the minutes go by, the townspeople become increasingly brutalized and debased, on a Saturday night that will end in tragedy. Robert Reford's character is a born loser, who has escaped from prison and returns to the only place he knows, his hometown, where his wife Jane Fonda lives, or his parents, rude people who have not given him the affection necessary to make him a worthwhile man. Marlon Brandon and his spouse Angie Dickinson, they are without a doubt the most humane couple in that 'wretched' town. The direction is sublime, with no concessions to any kind of unneeded 'joy'.

Jeepers Creepers: Reborn (2022)

Reborn don't exist

As they say in my Spain "Let's draw a thick veil" or what is the same, let's eliminate this hour and 25 minutes from our mind. Let's look at the MIB flash and we will all be happier in ignorance.

This Reborn was born dead and buried, only no one has warned them.

Aside from copyright issues, a special effects budget found in some wallet found in a desert, or a script that smells worse than the dead people in the original film, actors of which I only save Sydney Craven (I want to see her in a real horror film) and Peter Brooke. The rest meh.

In short there are only two parts, the original and a decent sequel, part three and this Reborn don't exist!

Abandoned (III) (2022)

I did feel abandoned.

Why? How can so much talent be wasted? Was it filmed in one day and one night?

Sorry Emma Roberts (you always deliver and I didn't stop watching thanks to you), it's not your fault, nor any actor's fault, just a director and screenwriters didn't have material to do more than this dreck? I feel sorry for those who have been scouting locations, for the cinematographer and many more, but either this was a commissioned film and unwillingly made or I can't find an explanation.

Men (2022)

WTF! This is a joke

MEN is nothing more than the delusions of a work team, headed by its director, without any kind of foundation.

And I can't use the hackneyed "it's a film for 'knowledgeable' or 'intelligent' people", it doesn't work because it's not the case. We only watch a great photography in an unbeatable location that goes down the drain from minute 1 and surpasses everything that is despicable in a third act full of garbage.

The director's debut feature has gone too much to his head, being Ex-Machina a great film... and to those critics who compare him to the best David Cronenberg or that he surpasses Lars Von Trier, just tell them to go to a specialist, for their own good.

Donnalyn has a gift, and that gift is that her good vibes, her joy, her talent and her music transcends the screen or the headphones and makes you enjoy and feel like partying! And dancing and enjoying and that's just what music is for. The music video is all this and more and proves that the fun as the show must go on.

You're Not Alone (2020)

It is a trap.

That's what this film is, nothing more, nothing less. The final twist (I won't reveal it) has nothing to do with what has been narrated for more than 75 minutes and on top of that it is left without explanation, because some people believe that open endings are the best, I'm one of those people, but as long as there is a motivation that is not found here.

The development of the characters can be improved, the house, which has its point, is totally wasted and the flashbacks bring nothing but confusion.

Katia Winter's performance is far above the film.

A product that our mind will discard for self-defence.

The Grandmother (2021)

Entertaining, but predictable

Paco Plaza continues to demonstrate his skill behind the camera, but as he did in Veronica, he does not get rid of the gimmicky and plays it safe with the effective. It seems that he has found his comfort zone and does not want to leave that bubble.

The film fails in how predictable it is, as you don't need more than 15 minutes to know how the story and the final climax will develop.

The best is the interpretative duel between the grandmother, magnificent Vera Valdez, and the no less spectacular performance of Almudena Amor, carrying almost all the interpretative weight of the film and coming out much more than successful.

In conclusion, you are left with a bittersweet taste because this director with these actresses should have produced a much more rounded product.

The Stay (2021)

As of March 5, 2022, 1,235 people have given it 10 stars, 1,199 have given it a 9 and 1011 have given it an 8 and that makes me shock. A movie with no script, no plot, no technical means? I refuse to believe that I'm one of those arrogant critics, so I don't want to crush the movie, but I was going to give it between 2 and 3 stars but I'd better give it a 1 to even it out and get it to its fair score.

Honeydew (2020)

I don't like to judge before time.

I must confess that as the film unfolded, I had some moments of doubt about what feelings it was producing in me; Was it slow or boring? No, despite his long periods with absolutely nothing happening except time itself. Was I seeing a genius or a madness from a new feature film director? Neither yes nor no, because didn't feel this like a work of art or little a jewel and nor did I feel like the director was making fun of me, beyond a very David Lynch moment that had nothing to do with style of the movie and that contributed absolutely nothing.

So, with the credit titles I asked myself the definitive question; Do you like that? And the answer took longer than normal to reach the surface of my thought ... And that answer came with an anger, because I'm tired of it almost always having to be religious fanaticism (or what is the same coming from the USA) Christian fanatism, because we all know that the only ones who are bad on the earth are the believers in God. They had a thousand ways of explaining the same thing to us, but after so much trouble it all comes down to that, which was already dropped at the beginning of the film, but as a good Christian, I don't like to judge before time.

Prikosnoveniye (1992)

Life can be wonderful and amazing...

Or rather the opposite. Well, that's what the director seems to be trying to convey to us and what if he succeeds. It is a movie where the depressing is visible almost in every frame. For this and despite a low budget, he knows how to play with the lenses, the camera cuts, the old and abandoned buildings so typical of the recently abandoned USSR. He delves into this idea of a sad world doomed to failure and the fact that we never see an evil that you can call a villain in order to position ourselves fuels that anguish.

Even good turns into bad and good actions into heinous events.

It is not made to entertain, it simply terrorizes us without makeup or sweeteners. Take it or leave it.
