Road House (2024)

Over the top awesome
23 March 2024
I feel like the reviews that are bad didn't go into watching this film with an open mind. This movie is over the top Swayze awesome. This was Road House with a flare of Point Break. McGregor just did the thing that made everyone want to watch his fights, and did it amazingly. If you go into this movie thinking "this will be like one the Jason Bourne movies" you will leave confused. If you go into it with a "remember how ridiculous and fun Road House was" you'll leave loving every second.

Quick note about CGI fighting, they filmed quite a few shots in what's called a four-take sequence. Which is why the punches look so real, but also kinda not. But that's not the point. The point is, it's fun, awesome, hilarious, action packed.....it's Road House.

I don't think people understand.
7 January 2024
People are looking at this movie in a weird way. It is an original love story, regarding two people, and the *most complications you can fit into a love story while holding it all together. It, has the least amount of tropes for this category of film, and draws you in emotionally on several different levels.

Here is where the reviews start to slant. It's what I've heard as a "gay-mance" movie. Meaning a romantic film involving lovers of the same sex (in case you don't know). But if Dan Levi was played by Rachel McCadams, this would be better than The Notebook; and I hope someone tells Dan Levi that. It's a great romance that should be recognized in film. It was great to watch with my wife and ask "what if...?" I would implore everyone else to do the same.

Style/substance
26 December 2023
There has been a lot of speculation regarding whether this film is a "good film" or an actual good movie. I'm not an expert. But as a film, it looks like, feels like, and seems like you are watching an old classic. Even the radio hammy voices they speak in seem distracting. Listen. Bradley Cooper did some aesthetically that can't be repeated. But the drawback of having a film feel like it was made 70 years ago, is that you have a film that looks like it was made 70 years ago. But it ain't Brando. I respect the man. Great actor and filmmaker. Outside of the makeup this is unfulfilling. ....add more characters, okay...the problem is that everyone in the movie spoke as if they were old actors, but only familiar with radio format entertainment in terms of their voice. Everything is over enunciated. It's distracting.

George Mackay is an Irish Tyler Durden
14 August 2023
Listen, there are scenes in this movie where you would think David fincher and Terrance Malick had a baby. It was gorgeous. It was stunning to see and bear witness to.

There is some low-key eodipus things at work here, but damn it this movie is a rocker. This movie took place a person and a half ago. That's how things were. The Irish have been integral in so many fingers of history it's impossible to discontent. This movie proves bare to that. Every cast member does their job.

I don't know what else to say but to see it. If you like Guy Ritchie, good direction, great cinematography, what'chu waiting for. ~ToviSeven.

Cillian should at least get nominated
29 July 2023
I can't express enough how absolutely phenomenal this movie is. It will stand the test of time and will possibly go down in history as one of the greatest films ever made.

The movie is three hours long and at no point does it lose your attention. Cillian Murphy should, and probably will, get nominated for an Oscar. And he probably will get it. I don't want to spoil anything, but from the practical visual effects, to every single performance, every aspect of this movie is inspiring. I saw it the weekend it came out and will be buying the blu-ray as soon as it is released.

I would also like to add that Robert Downey Jr. Should also be nominated for an Oscar because he absolutely nailed his performance in every way possible. I highly recommend seeing this on the big screen. I assure you, you won't be disappointed. Me, my wife, and my 19 year old son were all completely blown away.

Terrible
29 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There is no plot. I'm writing this review the day after I witnessed this atrocity, and both me and my wife couldn't say what it was actually about. We decided to watch it because we both really like Thandiwe Newton, and she did the best she could with what she was provided. But man, this movie sucked.... Here is my best example of how absolutely terrible it is. This is a spoiler, but it's important to point out. When the bad guys kill her dog, me and my wife didn't even care. Think about that.... We are dog people. We have two dogs we love very much, and when they killed her dog in the movie, we couldn't have cared any less.

The pacing of the movie is DISTRACTINGLY slow, and nothing makes sense. Nothing.....makes sense.

If you decide to take part and watch this complete waste of time, just know, I tried to talk you out of it. I'm telling you, DON'T DO IT! I only gave it two stars because the mountains of Montana are beautiful, and they are the only part of the movie that makes sense.

Was good, could have been great
10 May 2023
It boils down to what lengths will a parent go to in order to ensure the survival and well-being of a child. And those lengths will come at no cost. To really boil it down as to why I gave it a six and not higher, is because there is a major plot point in the movie that never really gets explained or answered.

I don't know if this was a metaphor for addiction or just a straight forward horror movie, but I was pretty enthralled throughout the entire thing. I never knew, for the most part, what was coming next. Again, outside of a singular plot point that never receives an explanation, it was actually not a bad movie. I'll recommend it to the wife tomorrow and ask her to write her own review. But I think it deserves a check.

Lastly, the kid.....man he is good..

It's a philosophy question
23 April 2023
This movie is really about the lengths you would go to, before you realize the authority you possess that you don't believe is real actually exists. You are smart, level headed, try to make decisions that are best for your family, but also you want to make sure you are a good person. That you don't cause hurt to anyone. And what happens when you can't have it both ways?

If you were given a box with a red button, and every time you press it someone in the world you have never known and will never meet dies. But you instantly get 10 million dollars. A lot of us, probably, more than you would think, would press the button maybe once. But with that one press, that unknown person to you, just happened to be my son. This movie is a philosophical question, not political, no biased. Just a simple philosophical question like the one I just posed. When does all of humanity... matter more than you.

Worth your time.
1 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Me and my wife never talk through movies. We just don't, it is an unspoken rule of respect. On several occasions we found ourselves pausing it in mutual agreement to politely discuss what we thought was going on and who was doing what to who. It could pass for a Soderberg film minus all bass drops. It's a good catch of a film and worth the time.

Spoiler section: It's broken into segments based on characters, and even then it is good at keeping you guessing. I had doubts at first, but am happy with the outcome. I would encourage this if you are in for a con-game style movie that isn't diluted in slick shots and cool jazz.

Do not watch this.
12 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This does not even qualify as a movie. There are no actors that you can actually see, no plot to speak of, and just lots of dark shots of ceilings and walls. There is a voice, but in order to even make out what it is saying you have to have the captions on. And that's when they aren't provided for you. A complete and total waste of time. It earned 1 star because it felt creepy but for no distinguishable reason other than it looked like it was filmed terribly on purpose. And also zero stars is not an option. I am actually mad that I can't get the time I wasted watching this back. The trailer for the film is the only thing worth your time. And I NEED to point out, the trailer might have more dialogue than the actual thing I just watched, that I refuse to refer to as a movie. Genuinely terrible. Like watching old home videos filmed by a 4 year old obsessed with poor lighting and walls. I can not stress enough, how bad this is. Whatever rating is positive had to either have been a relative of the film makers or one of the 40 some people that received a special thanks at the beginning of whatever it was I just witnessed.

'Nell' tries really, really hard to be 'The Notebook'
29 January 2023
I have not read the book to this film, though I have heard it was very good. I picked the film based on the rating, since for the most part once movies have a 7 or above on IMDB they tend to enjoyable. I am unable to say the same for this film. Sadly, with the exception of a few actors, the delivery is punishingly wooden. The acting was bad enough for it to be distracting in a couple scenes. Ignoring the fact that a young woman who grew up barefoot in the swamp still managed to have gorgeous teeth, the film leaves the main question of the plot unanswered. There are beautiful moments in this terribly acted movie. Avoid the terrible acting and maybe just read the book.

Didn't see any part of it coming.
22 January 2023
Between me and my wife I always have to pick what we watch. Not because I'm a movie guru, but because she has a terrible record of picking movies that are barely watchable. This is NOT one of those movies. It is listed as a comedy, and while there are funny parts, it is much much more than that. It is part mystery, part heartbreak, part social commentary, and entirely a great movie. To give specifics is impossible because the move is fantastic due to the sum of its parts. Not only did I enjoy every scene of the film, I was blown away by the third act.....I mean...Again, I don't want to spoil anything, but this movie is well written and directed, and I am excited for what else B. J. Novak has to offer in the future.

Social class theory in motion
18 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Talk about a movie that caught me off guard. First I watched it alone. Then I asked my wife to watch it with me just so we could discuss so many of the hypothetical situations along with the social classifications made throughout the film. Super dope. Would highly recommend watching it with a partner because of all the conversations that could be ignited over the course of the film. Please be warned. There is in fact approximately 13 minutes mid film dedicated specifically to fluids that are supposed to remain in the body, refusing to do so. I would have summed that up quicker, but there is a character requirement. Definitely recommend.

It is just not good.
8 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Noah Baumbach is known for making sure his actors read word for word exactly what the script reads. The problem with doing that in this particular movie, is that no one ever, at any point in their lives, actually speak to each other in this way. So the dialogue alone is terrible and mildly difficult to follow. Also, based on the trailer you would think that the world possibly ending would take up a large portion of the film. In reality it lasted about 20 or so minutes in the MIDDLE of the movie. There is not really a climax to the film, and the plot regarding the medication belonging to the wife is the terribly acted focus of the film. In the end, the movie just isn't good and makes very little sense. I do not recommend watching it because, well, it is pretty bad.

Creepy enough to be worth it.
12 December 2022
So there is a bit to unpack in trying to review this movie. Someone could argue that is was mildly disjointed with two separate plots. And that person wouldn't exactly be wrong, but they wouldn't be correct either. If you are looking for a scary movie to get lost in tonight, this is an acceptable choice that would not disappoint. It isn't The Shining, but it's better than MOST, IFC Fright Night movies. I don't want to give away the manner in which the movie can kind of stumble over itself, because if it is so bad you should know immediately. The thing is, even though there all these bad ratings, it is still a fun scare to have on a random night when you want to watch a new scary movie. Hopefully you enjoy!

Emancipation (2022)

Probably the best of the year
10 December 2022
Emancipation is probably the best film made in 2022. If you were to deny that, you would still have to admit it is in the top five. It is amazing. The direction, the acting, the cinematography, all of it is amazing. If Will Smith doesn't at the very least get nominated for best actor I'm calling the awards fluffed. And Ben Foster, I mean, can we say there was a better supporting actor performance? Probably not. And to finalize my proof the film is if not the greatest, but one of the greatest, of the year... The vast majority of the film was in black and white, and as a viewer it isn't distracting. Because the scene itself is so beautiful, and the acting so perfect. Not sure where the 1 star ratings are coming from, but....no.

A tail of a father and son
6 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This cuts deep in regards to the relationships between fathers and sons. Obviously it focuses on Robert Downey Jr. And Robert Downey Sr., but it is a film to be reflected on by any man raising a son. It is an intimate look into the complex relationship that exists between the men who grow, and the men who raised them. A lens between the past, present, and potential future. Lastly, there needs to be a deep deep respect and ultimate admiration to RDJ to allow the outside world to look at him and his father's relationship while his father is fading into the twilight of his years. It's a documentary for people who love film, and for those who admire what it takes to be a father...

Olivia couldn't figure it out, Harry wasn't ready
8 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Shia would have gave the movie more credit and urgency. Harry isn't there yet and he looks 12. Without specifics, the men 'trick' the women into this idealized version of life. No reason is given & it's a missed character opportunity. Act 1 and act 2 focus primarily on two small sex scenes. (2nd is weird) Act 3 only ties 1/3 of it all together while we basically ignore a suicide? The combination of Pugh and Pine (with a singular scene w/Olivia) provide the best scenes. But the movie can't figure out how to get to act 3 and concludes in a '...ok...' I like Olivia Wilde, and think she may have GREAT things to offer.

Not this.

It is a not political movie
13 March 2022
This is a great movie detailing the emotional journey of someone who has suffered PTSD. Specifically when it is a shared PTSD and how the body can try to shut off any and all emotional and physical feelings the came from that trauma. It has nothing to do with politics, it does not pick sides, it just tells you the story of how this can impact a few different people. Nothing is over dramatic. Nothing is boring. It is just about a girl, who after a tragic event, is just trying to cope. It's good. Also, if it matters to anyone, I actually am a social worker who works with kids, some of which have PTSD. Not saying that should be a reason to watch it, I'm just saying it is a great story we all should acknowledge is currently unfolding.

Just don't
12 February 2022
It isn't really a good movie. Story lines are spliced together erratically and not completed. ALL of the actors are dope though. All of them pull off amazing characters in this Alfred Hitchcock spin of Rear Window.

Not worth it, not a good movie. Legit 4 stars for the actors. 0 stars for the movie.

This is a great movie about small time friends and what they would be/are willing to do in the name of "friendship" and how that overpowers more than almost anything; specifically when it comes to being a parent.

Well, that's one way of looking at it...
26 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The documentary gives a solid attempt at painting this dude as a troll, and not a complete and total greed mongering d*ck. It came close a couple times, but by the end when one of the interviewees throughout the film is also his current journalist girlfriend, you realize him being a d*ck was correct all along. Also, pharmacy laws are bad, who didn't know that?

A good movie with no surprises
9 January 2022
I know there are good reviews on here and there are bad reviews. I'm confused by the bad ones because they don't necessarily hold up. It's a well written, well acted, well *directed movie that's a joy to watch. It's not an Oscar winner, but it's a good movie and worth your time as a viewer; so long as you like movies...

If you appreciate genuineness, then you obviously appreciate Bourdain. You'll absolutely appreciate and cherish all the moments in this film. It captures the beginning, middle, and touches on the moments that occur with human emotion that occurs behind closed doors.
