I came home from work and my wife had already started in on the film, if you could, call it that. Inwas suprised my usual call outs didnt fly and there were actually a few good scenes that COULD HAVE been taken into WAY stronger postions and made for an epic film. It feels like the writers had a ton of great ideas on napkins...but hadnt thought out the full execution to each design and twist. The basement scene although highly unbelieveable...(nobody would dare walk down that pitch black stairway) ...the scene did raise the ole neck hairs and the digital animations of ghosts were in my opinion, done very well indeed!
Especially the girl on the door fading in and out...that was kinda cool. But the main keeps running about, and never has that more realistic "epiphany moment" where she decides to learn more ...but instead runs from everything incessantly. She begins to have that learn curve but seems to blow past it with some hast as her moms mail shows up and causes massive doubt, so they figured...sure..lets make her crazy! The ending ...or double ....ending?!?!?!? ...I guess you could call it that, must have been a situation where the donor expected them to spend ALL of the $250k to make the movie they contracted for....so back to the drawing napkins they went....improv acted some 8 minute disaster, and it was likely added to the movie as a $50 dare. Had they just left the castle in the car...that would have been historically accurate as far as most cheeseball horror films go, and I feel like most people would have been less let down and accepted it. However, the weird waking up, mom dream thing and aformentioned improv had about as much help as salt on a wound or spit in the eye, which at this point...would be an upgrade for how I currently feel after watching this thing.
Lastly, to the effects crew, I salute you and offer a true "Bravo" for your hard work. We all know aint nobody seeing ANYTHING in water at night, without goggles, but you guys made a pretty slick representation.
