Da Vinci's Inquest (1998)
One of the best TV shows ever
Along with HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREETS, Davinci's Inquest is the best show written for TV I have ever seen. It is real, gritty, and Davinci's sarcastic attitude is delightful, as is his continual amazement at the lack of depth people show. I only recently started watching it, as WGN is showing the reruns. Wish I had caught it when it first aired. The rest of the cast is superb also. I particularly like his secretary and his wife, the pathologist. I am getting an insight into Vancouver, into Canadian rules of justice; and I note the differences in our own Bill of Rights and the lengths to which a coroner may go in Canada. Apparently they have the same problems with drugs and prostitution as the States. I'm sure most of Vancouver is beautiful, but this show gets down to the real underbelly which is peopled with real, believable characters. The stories and people are haunting and stay with you...
Flags of Our Fathers (2006)
A little disappointing
I was looking forward to this movie for weeks, as my father was a Marine at Iwo Jima, one of the fortunate who came back. He piloted those LSTs you see leaving the ships loaded with men, weapons, jeeps and tanks. After their last loads, the pilots too grabbed their rifles and joined those on the beach...
Much to my surprise, the movie makes much of the fact that the men who raised the flag were reluctant at best, their names and credit were incorrect, and they said they weren't fighting for their country but for their buddies. This would come as a big surprise to my father, who is buried at Arlington along with his buddies. He sure thought he was fighting for his country! He did agree with one thing though: He too said he was no hero; the heroes were all dead.
I found the movie disjointed and was unable to keep up with who was who as it kept jumping back and forth.
I was surprised at the attendance at this 1:25 PM first showing in South Mississippi. I thought I would surely be the only one there, but the theater was more than three-fourths full. And they weren't all old coots like me. They ranged in age from 12 or so to 90. Interesting....
