Can't Stand Losing You (2012)
Yawn!
I like the Police and I like Andy Summers, but after viewing this I can understand why they broke up. Andy manages to make himself seem like such a bore.
He describes how they pretended to be punk and then they pretend to be reggae and when Sting kicks in with the pop songs they go through the roof. Then they pretend to be pop stars.
He whines about Sting being independent and not letting him get his songs on the albums but it is clear Sting doesn't need either of them and the problems they bring despite the fact they are excellent musicians, so why bother?
The references to smoking lots of pot as if there are some stakes in this story are laughable. His stoic diary method of narrating makes this like sitting in some old guys house while he shows you slides of his whole life. Although he did just happen to spend a lot of time with Sting.
The music doesn't save it as it is poorly used. The indulgence in his own boredom with life leading to taking pictures as if he has attained some magic art form about sums up the overall interest stirred up in this conceit.
Basically, Andy didn't allow an actual director to make an interesting film and like their music overly controls the life out of it.
Mother! (2017)
Epic mind blowing experience
Do you ever get the feeling that everyone who hates a movie doesn't understand it? I think this film does exactly what it intended to do. Sure some folks won't like it but if you like intense shocking metaphors and have some idea about the mythologies of religion you will probably enjoy it. The first hour can be irritating and frustrating, but it paid off to me.
The Devil and Father Amorth (2017)
You gotta believe!
OK, call me a skeptic, but if I taped someone speaking in dual voiced slightly delayed harmonics, that would be the key to the entire project right there. The title would be, Possession proof via audio recording of the voice of Satan! Instead, it goes without discussion or further interest. This could mean one thing; it's a fake. (It sounds exactly like the Satan voice you can buy with vocal effect units at any music store.)
Why would he bury the lead? It serves one purpose; keep the believers believing, And that is all the audience you need when you are a charlatan. Meanwhile, those who know a bit about audio or are skeptics will immediately wonder what happened? How did that get skipped over? This is a much more crucial mystery because it needs to be solved before you can take the next step.
Friedkin could have not only eliminated this question but sold the whole project on it! But he did not. Again, ask yourself why?
The non-religious testimony is dismissive. The religious commenters are useless in this context of legitimizing. The whole thing is poorly made and embarrassing as a project for the director. Apologist involved are on record saying they saw early version pre-post and the voice was there. But would you really expect a charlatan to show it before he put the effect on. Again, extraordinary claim requires extraordinary evidence. In this day and age, trusting a video tape is just not smart.
The woman first found she had a problem during a mass and it coincidentally gets worse during an exorcism. This is presented as good evidence along with her brothers testimony.
To wrap up he retells a story where he forgot to bring his camera... The voice now has additional lower pitched voices in addition to the already suspiciously altered voice to really drive it home, again without pointing out how unbelievably important that would be.
American Beauty (1999)
B e a utiful
Cold wind blowing through the alley at Dawn and the morning paper flys. Dead man lying on the side of the road, with the daylight in his eyes. Don't let it bring you down. It's only castles burning. Find someone who's turning. And you will come around. Think of this when you watch the film.
For those who get stuck on the old guy interested in a young girl, you will miss the whole point. Remember, Ricky smiles at Lesters dead face, because it is not sad. Rickys flying news paper video, the "day light" in Lesters dead eyes indicating he is the guy who has "turned" are all master strokes. The question is will YOU come around?
Mars Attacks! (1996)
We are your friends!
This movie did not receive its just deserves. The more you watch it the funnier it is. The casting is perfect in every way and dense with stars who appear to be having a lot of fun. Martin Short is hilarious and deserves some kind of award. The aliens and space ships are right on. This film, Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands are Burton's masterpieces. Right from the title sequence you can see Tim got it right. Just remember one idea as you are watching this movie; if it walks like a duck, and it talks like a duck... Ack! AcK!! ACK!!! Not just regarding the aliens but every character. From the Slim Whitman yodeling induced head explosions to the nuclear warhead bong hit this movie is OUTTA THIS WORLD!!!
Histoires extraordinaires (1968)
To me... the devil is a little girl. A Zen Koan.
From the moment I saw this movie late one night on television, I have been obsessed with it. Particularly the Fellini piece. Anyone who doesn't like it because they think it doesn't make sense, doesn't get it. Read the book. Yes, it is very different from the book, yet it is the same. This is one of the things that made Fellini such a master. Those who criticized it for not having enough to do with Poe, must not have read it. It is so Poe in it's sarcasm and wit. William Wilson is more like the Poe original which is historic in its analysis of a conflicted personality split in two. A fun romp into insanity and decadence. Brilliant. Mezengerstein is worth the price of admission just to see Jane in those outfits. It is a poetic painting of good and evil and their relationship. The passion for pleasure of evil leads it to become obsessed with good, which eventually consumes it in it's flames. Again, apparently many out there don't like it because they don't understand it. Need more stimulus? Is it moving too slow for you? Maybe you're like Toby Dammit. Terence Stamps acting really stands out and his roll is the proto-type for Pink Floyds The Wall and was also probably influenced by Bob Dylans success. He is a famous actor who is bored and his talent is waning, (not that Bob's ever did) but he sees life from a very different perspective than "normal" people. The scary part is; it makes sense from his point of view. It is a prophetic vision of punk rock at it's kind. Nothing is interesting, when you literally "live fast." And you gradually become insensitive and wreck-less, until... you pay the piper his due.
