Poor Things (2023)
Had some moments, but boring and I left early
I was really excited for this movie because it looked really interesting and humorous, but it wasn't able to pull me in. After an hour and a half, I decided to leave the theater instead of spending the rest of my night watching the movie. I have an unlimited movie pass and see at least two movies a week. Some are decades old some are new, but I never walk out of a theater because most of them have something engaging and enjoyable.
Visually, it looked great and I loved the sets they used, it was all very original and beautiful. The story and characters were interesting but ultimately boring. There was a lot of sex scenes and full nudity from Emma Stone that I think they tried to use to keep people's attention and interest. Outside of that, a lot of boring dialogue with some bits of attempted humor thrown in. It probably deserves a better rating than what I'm giving it, but since I only saw 70% of the movie, I'm rating it based on that portion. The movie definitely doesn't deserve the 8.6 star rating it has at the time of writing this and doubt that the last thirty minutes or so would make me double my rating score.
The story was original, there were great actors playing interesting characters, and the world was beautiful, similar to a Wonka type set design with vibrant colors (black and white for the first act or two). Unfortunately, none of this makes up for the slow and bland story. Would not recommend seeing in theaters. Wait for it to hit a streaming platform and watch it on a night you're bored and have nothing else to watch or do. If you're bored before watching it, you might find it entertaining.
Jeepers Creepers: Reborn (2022)
Look how they massacred my boy
It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the death of a classic and nostalgic horror franchise, "Jeepers Creepers". The series we all once loved was in a tragic accident and passed away.
I don't know what they were thinking. This is just a sad disappointment that it's hard to find the words to describe. It's like they were given a decent budget, hired actors and directors from low budget independent films, and pocketed what was left.
This movie should have gone to someone else. Honestly, it would have probably been better in Rob Zombie's hands because this is something I could see in his wheelhouse. (Note: I don't really care for any of Rob Zombie's movies other than Halloween I and II, but I could see him doing better with this than whoever directed it.)
Issues:
- Bad writing -
- Terrible acting -
- Their accents (my god) -
- Green screen for days -
There's more but this movie made me sick and I'm tired of talking about it. While writing this I changed the rating from a 2 to a 1.
0 out of 10. Will never watch again.
Peacemaker (2022)
I expected garbage but found gold
I wasn't that into Peacemaker very much in the Suicide Squad and think John Cena isn't a good actor, so I wasn't in a hurry to watch it and thought it was odd that this is the character they chose to do a spin off show about. Last week my buddy told me to watch it and I'm so glad I did. It's fun, hilarious, great action, and has the best intro I've seen in a long time.
The relationship between Peacemaker and Vigilante is one of my favorite things about the show and Vigilante himself is enough to keep me hooked. Ended up watching the first five episodes in one sitting this past Friday and now I have it running in the background while I'm working. DC has done better with their TV shows and animated movies than their live action stuff, and with the addition of James Gunn, both things appear to be improving. I've been more of a Marvel fan and enjoyed a couple of the shows from last year, but so far Peacemaker is beating the Marvel shows.
I hope to see a lot more of this.
Midnight Mass (2021)
Good show, but those monologues are drawn out.
Like the show a lot. Not scary, but a little thrilling and suspenseful.
My only issue with it is the monologues. Characters will start rambling for 5 minutes at a time about an issue that, I think, we're supposed to feel attached to in some way and feel their sorrow but it doesn't fit well and we can't relate to it. Eventually just makes me look away and do something else until they are done.
I'll make one up as an example. This is almost exactly how the conversations go.
Jane: "John, would you help carry in the groceries, please?"
John: "When I grew up on a farm in this small town of ours, I had dreams of one day getting out and making it big. I worked hard on the farm and on my studies and graduated at the top of my class. I received a scholarship, moved out of this town and was determined to make something of myself. Everyone always said, "John, you'll never get out of this town."; "John, you'll never be anything other than a farm boy.". Well, after four years of college I graduated with a bachelors in engineering. I knew I could do it and prove everyone wrong, but it wasn't enough. I needed to accomplish more so I could show them all how they underestimated me and that I was more than just some simple farm boy. I spent years designing and building for company after company until I created my greatest invention and started my company. Things were great for a while. I got married to a beautiful woman, had three beautiful children, and my company was successful. Life was good, it was time to show everyone that they were wrong. I came back to this town with my family to show everyone just how wrong they were and how great I had become. My wife kept telling me not to go, but I just wouldn't listen. She cried, begging me not to move us all back to my hometown. She was devastated. The kids were hurt and upset. I was sad that they just couldn't understand that I needed everyone to see what I've accomplished. We got there late in the afternoon on a Thursday in Spring. Everything we owned in the back of the moving truck we rented. Seeing this town again almost broke me down, but I knew I had to be strong. We pulled up to the house and started unloading our things. I grabbed the first box off the truck and carried it to the house. As I got closer to the door, I slipped in the lose gravel and fell to the ground hurting my back. That was 10 years ago and I can almost still feel the pain in my back. So you ask me to help you carry in the groceries? I wish I could Jane, but that memory lives with me EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. And I don't know If I could live through that horror again. That's why I can't help you, Jane. That's why." *Sobbing ensues"
Jane: "I'm so sorry, John. Years ago I had something happen blah blah blah. More rambling about something random from the other person and it doesn't impact the story"
Black Widow (2021)
This was barely a Marvel movie and the characters are a joke.
If you look at Black Widow as an over the top action spy movie without all of the Marvel characters, then it's mediocre at best. When you take into account this is a Marvel movie and you know the characters, this becomes a disappointment. I don't want to put too much time into this review, so I'm just going to add my main issues. Spoilers ahead.
1. The biggest issue in this is that they ruined Taskmaster. They turned the awesome character and origin of Anthony Masters (Taskmaster) into the story of a girl named ANTONIA who was caught in an explosion and turned into a mind controlled drone by her father. Taskmaster is now ruined in the MCU and can never join it properly unless they forget Black Widow. The only thing in this that is Taskmaster, is the name and the fact the character can mimic moves, which by itself isn't the true character.
2. Apparently Black Widow is more human than other humans? I say it this way because she's constantly falling 50-100 feet and catching ledges, hitting fire escapes and hitting the ground and able to just walk away without a slight injury. I understand this is a comic book movie, but they just didn't care. Usually they go a little over the top with how much characters like Black Widow and Hawkeye can survive while keeping it somewhat close to reality. Not here. It's like the writers said, "Okay, Black Widow can now take the same kinds of falls, hits, etc. As a super soldier, but she's human." and left it at that.
3. Red Guardian was pretty fun, but more of a bumbling buffoon. I'm not very familiar with him or his backstory, but it was like he was in there as comic relief instead of an actual character. I can't say they ruined him because I don't know enough about him, but after his introduction I expected big things and they kind of just his wasted potential.
There are more, but personally my main issue is with gender swapping Taskmaster. Unfortunately this is something that Marvel is probably going to do with a lot of characters. If you are going to make a female version of a character, at least STICK TO THE ORIGIN! Don't just create a completely new character and say that's the character now, because it's ruined. You could have literally called the character Blademaster or something and it would be a character different from Taskmaster, thus saving one of the best mercenary marvel villain's in the MCU.
Top Gear America (2020)
Finally a Top Gear I can get back into
For years my go to show was BBC's 2002 Top Gear until Clarkson, Hammond, and May "left" the show. I couldn't get back into it after they were replaced. I tried Top Gear (American TV Series), which had it's moments but never felt the same. Then there was the 2017 Top Gear America that lost my attention so fast that I almost forgot it existed.
The new 2021 season of Top Gear America caught my attention with Dax and Rob. With that alone I had to give it a shot and I'm glad I did. This isn't as good as the BBC Top Gear (2002), but it's still in it's infancy and even from the first episode it's better than some of the other versions of Top Gear. At the time of writing, they are only on episode 3 and I can see the show gaining more and more momentum. If given enough time to mature, this version of Top Gear could become the next best thing to Top Gear (2002). (The Grand Tour is obviously the next best thing considering the cast, but seems to be lacking episodes currently).
Update: Recently watched the latest 3 seasons of BBC Top Gear with Chris Harris, Paddy McGuinness, and Andrew Flintoff. Highly recommend watching as that was some of the best content I've seen.
Pros:
- Dax and Rob - Dax is a gearhead and Rob has a base knowledge, but both are funny and would honestly be a great duo in a movie.
- Fun content and commentary
- Shows massive amount of potential. If executed correctly, could become a big hit and long running series.
- Overall really enjoyable to watch and slowly improves after each episode.
Cons:
- Not a huge fan of Jethro. He feels a little separated from the show and a little boring.
- Length. The show is just too short or at least feels that way. They are around 35 minutes and I think the average for BBC Top Gear was 50-65 minutes depending on commercial breaks. This is a show where you need longer episodes to successfully cover the subject and entertain viewers.
- Motortrend. I feel like this is just the wrong place for it, but that could just be me. The only way I heard about this show is from Ads on Facebook and that it's stream on Motortrend for $5 a month (which is a good deal considering). Even so, it's not marketed very well and will be missed by many potential viewers.
Overall, I think this show has amazing potential and is a good watch. Unfortunately I don't think it will last long because it's currently on Motortrend and not getting the care or advertising it needs to survive with the cast it has. I think it could really take off if it was picked up by Netflix, Amazon, or even HBO Max and given some more screen time. Motortrend did a great job picking Dax and Rob who are pretty famous and well known, but I'm not sure if a network like MT could reach an audience big enough to keep this going. The sad part is that the show will probably last a season, maybe two, and then will get cancelled because of low viewership. This won't because of the cast or the content, but because of the lack of viewers that even know it exists. I hope it survives and becomes a big hit, but don't see that happening on Motortrend.
Buddy Games (2019)
Surprisingly good amongst bad reviews
I've never written a review before and created an IMDB account just to write one for this movie. There are a lot of negative reviews and others comparing this to Grown Ups and Tag. This movie is similar to those in the sense that friends get back together after a few years apart and end up becoming a stronger group after doing crazy things and having fun. Where it differed for me is the cast and that it didn't rely on a bunch of forced comedy. The cast for me is what made this movie work. I'm not a big Josh Duhamel or Nick Swardson fan, but enjoyed every minute of their screen time. It's good to see Nick Swardson in something other than an Adam Sandler film where the lines feel forced and only half of the funny parts are actually funny. Swardson's tone and delivery of his lines felt more genuine and almost improved compared to reading from a script which had me laughing a lot.
Grown Ups was a movie that had its moments, but felt force, scripted, and tried too hard. Tag was a great movie, but I always felt like it lacked something that I couldn't pinpoint and I never felt like I need to watch it a second time. When it comes to Buddy Games, I never felt like they were trying to make me laugh by doing something stupid or saying a one liner. It was like watching people do something they enjoy and having fun doing it while not caring who watched or what people would think. They weren't talking to me, trying to get my attention, or trying to make me laugh which a lot of similar movies try to do to keep you engaged. They were just doing there own thing and I liked watching.
Buddy Games felt more like Without A Paddle, which was hilarious and is a movie I can re-watch every year. Just a group of friends getting back together after a long time and having a great time. Didn't feel predictable, too raunchy, or even graphic. It was fun.
When you have a couple of hours to sit down and watch a movie, give Buddy Games a shot. Don't watch it expecting your emotions, morals, or life to be changed or moved by it. Don't watch it expecting a serious movie. Watch it when you're not currently under pressure from life and things going on around you. Watch it at a time when you are feeling good and light or maybe even sad and need a pick me up. Watch it when you have time to really enjoy a movie and have nothing else on your mind so you can take it in. Go in with an open mind. Don't listen to negative reviews for any movie or show. If something sounds somewhat interesting and you have time, give it a shot with this in mind.
I expected nothing from Buddy Games because of the reviews so I waited until I felt like it was a good time for me to watch it with a clear head and I'm glad I did. I had a great time watching it and think it deserves better reviews.
