Undone: Rectify (2022)
I cried the hardest
Stunning work. Wanting to be able to save your family, your mother from the torment of trauma is so powerful. But displayed through Odenkirk's gut wrenching performance makes it all the more real. Some of the best writing of the show and even the best episode of the series. Reminds us that family is everything and that you hopefully will do anything to protect them.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine: The Good Ones (2021)
Great Moments, not smartly written
I think shows can be woke like B99, the show has always been "woke" in its portrayal of the police force. This episode tries to shove so many events over the past year and a half that it loses its touch in some scenes.
I think there are great scenes (Holt and Amy having a heart to heart for example) that really show the characters growth. But I truly think the scenes with Terry and Boyle are awful. Not smartly written, and just too much. I think this episode could've had a better 3rd subplot but it is what it is.
Over all still funny, and surprisingly emotional.
In the Heights (2021)
"Paciencia y fe..." "Patience and faith..."
In the Heights, I'm sure a majority of theatre people can agree, is both a gem and a masterpiece in the theatre world. Lin-Manuel Miranda's first major musical now adapted into a major film set the way for musicals in the 21st century to be more influenced by hip-hop/pop music than traditional showtunes. So when Warner Bros announced that a film adaptation was gonna be made, I never felt more excited. It was the adaptation I was both excited and worried for. It had to be done right.
I sat in this theatre, I laughed, danced in my seat, and sobbed like a child. Jon M. Chu and the fantastic ensemble of actors did something wonderful to Miranda's show. The film felt so separate from the stage production that it became its own thing. The film wasn't afraid to be real to the world around them, but also be an in-your-face Hollywood musical.
I must give a shout-out to both Anthony Ramos (Usnavi) and Olga Merediz (Abuela Claudia) who both gave honest, powerful performances that made you want to reach out and connect with them more. But the ensemble as a whole was just brilliant in every way. The chemistry between the characters, the frustrations, and so on were just so true to themselves and very engaging.
Jon M Chu's direction is what ultimately shines in this film. When doing musical numbers, it's so fast paced and colorful and out there that you get so entranced in the details around the character's singing; like in It Won't be Long Now when Vanessa is running in a street with colorful drapes floating above and Paciencia y fe using an entire subway to tell the tale of Abuela towards her peaceful passing. All of this was done through the genius that is Jon M Chu and I hope the industry keeps giving him musicals to direct, because he is what the world needs.
Overall, this adaptation is a masterpiece in the modern musical movie. Please watch this film to see fantastic representation in the Latinx community, but also to see a touching story of a neighborhood that feels more connected through the people than anything you will ever experience.
This is the film of our lifetime.
BoJack Horseman: Stupid Piece of Sh*t (2017)
I've never felt more seen
As someone with severe anxiety, this is such a great showcase of what it's like and how it feels.
Invincible (2021)
Best Show I've seen....
This is just quite frankly the Best animated show I've seen since Bojack. Very excited for season 2.
Shingeki no Kyojin: Savagery (2021)
My Favorite
What makes this episode my favorite of the whole series is the scene between Eren, Mikasa, and Armin. The way Eren tells both of his childhood friends that he hates them and thinks they are slaves is beyond what anyone thought he would say. Truly a powerful episode and a powerful series.
Shingeki no Kyojin: Perfect Game (2019)
A wreck
The only time the show made me cry. Erwin's speech was one of the defining moments of AOT and all of television. Truly a perfect game.
Shingeki no Kyojin: To You, in 2000 Years: The Fall of Shiganshina, Part 1 (2013)
Wow!
My friend forced me to watch this show and wow. I had to take a minute to process what I watched. Can't wait for what else is in store.
Eureka: Momstrosity (2010)
Kevin and Grant
The weakest characters of this season are Kevin and Dr. Grant. Grant has his moments but oh my god he is so obnoxious. Carter is right to dislike him because Grant tried to trap Carter in 1947. And I feel like I shouldn't say this, but I liked it better when Kevin had autism.
Shameless: The Apple Doesn't Fall Far from the Alibi (2019)
Copy and Paste
I hate how they're reusing lip's addiction story for Fiona's development. Her losing her apartment building is great, reusing addiction as a form of harsh character development becomes lazy and uninspiring.
Love how they worked the ICE detention center separations into this episode though, something political that works for the show.
