Suncoast (2024)
A lot of potential, nice to watch but does not hit the mark!
(spoilers yes) Film is carried by the acting. Period. The storyline, the dialogs sometimes fall weak and I think that is related to the lack of character development. The characters dialogues seem to not be coherent example Doris is very eloquent both in class and with her friend but during the one time she does speak back to her mother, she says "he is half dead anyway" after a completely cruel action by her mother - did not fit at all because she is not that person, even at her worst moments or at least that's the problem. Too many themes being explored at the same time but without any depth. It's like someone decided to patch up a few contemporary ideas. So all in all, watchable but I could not get invested in any character, hence the story.
Triangle of Sadness (2022)
The critics can't disassociate from their privilege
The movie gives an insights into life itself - as ugly, beautiful, realistic, brutal, dreamy life is. Must watch and while doing that, leave your identities behind.
For the critics saying that NOT ALL influencers, not all capitalists, not all white people - sorry but what use is saying that? The fact remains that for majority of people's lived realities - blind capitalism drives individualism, has fueled attachment to power and led to depletion of resources, we are in the largest mass extinction of species (how?) majority of influencers are addicted to dopamine, majority of BIPOC people do experience racism and their labour been invisibilised for generations.
This is a social commentary. The fact that you'd be more pleased seeing an altruistic capitalist or self aware influencer is because it's easier to digest, it conforms the morality of our own life choices. Gives an escape to our cognitive dissonance while we deal with the real hypocrisy of the NRA (300+ mass shootings in 2023 and we're only April) but guns protect our women and children? Why do the rich have to resort to philanthropy and altruism while unwilling to pay higher taxes (in real life)
Everyone has their privileges. Everyone. The move tries to give us a lens to recognise them and observe the patterns we might be contributing to (knowingly or unknowingly) The scenes that have been focused on help us recognise the intersectionality of our identities.
