Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre (2023)
Mission: Impossible Wannabe
First things first, this is kind of movie you want to enjoy in spare time since it has a straightforward plot and "too predictable" ending.
When I watched this movie on theater back in January, I didn't have any high expectations on the story even Guy Ritchie directed this. The only thing I wanted just to see Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie working together again. Out of all Guy Ritchie's movies that I have seen, Operation Fortune is Guy Ritchie's most straightforward movies. Kinda the B-rated Mission: Impossible movies, but who cares? I still enjoy this movie because Jason Statham is in it.
The plot revolves around a stolen briefcase called "The Handle", a generic MacGuffin. The hero, Orson Fortune and his team (J. J, and Sarah) are employed by Nathan Jasmine to find the missing briefcase before falling into the wrong hands. In order to do such thing, Orson employs a "ruse de guerre", which is to use a famous actor, Danny Francesco to get close to famous arms dealer Greg Simmonds.
What I found interesting this movie is that Guy Ritchie mostly filmed this on Turkey and Qatar. The views on several scenes are exceptionally beautiful and eye catching. For a standard action movies, Guy knows how to pick filming locations.
However, this movie has two main problems:
1. The ending is just too easy, even for Guy Ritchie's standards.
2. There are several interesting sub plot during Act 2 (about a possible mole), but unfortunately were aborted mid-way without any clear conclusion.
Interestingly, Operation Fortune and Mission: Impossible 7 have some similarities; hell even both movies have Cary Elwes in it and involving a missing Artificial Intelligence device. But to clear any confusion and suspicion, Mission: Impossible 7 was already in production before Guy Ritchie directed Operation Fortune. I'd like to see "Operation" as an action comedy and "Mission" as a more serious and fun summer movie.
F9 (2021)
Too ridiculous, too furious
After nine Fast & Furious Movies (Hobbs & Shaw included), who would've thought that the franchise has reached its most ridiculous point. The franchise which started as a movie that revolves around heist and illegal street racing has become "Class A Soap Opera". It seems Universal and Vin Diesel have $200 million to spend and make this ridiculous sequel that has become a parody of itself.
Every elements from soap opera are in this movie:
1) A long dead character (Han) who turns out faking his own dead with the help of Kurt Russell.
2) A long lost brothers that's never been mentioned by Dom in the past 20 years, not even Brian knows about Dom's long lost brother. The best part about this is the brother played by "You can't see me" guy. The casting director, Vin, and Justin literally took the joke too seriously.
3). Lots of unrealistic and ridiculous stunts that made the whole movie became a new joke to long time fans. The "Tarzan Swing" and the "Pontiac Fiero" sequences are too ridiculous that made me laughed in sarcastic way.
4). The whole family has become superheroes by this movie. Not even one of them has scratch from fighting, crashing, etc.
5) Bad characters turn to good characters with such a simple, yet illogical characterization and explanation.
6) For 20 years, we only know about Dom's dad (and finally a portrayal of him played by J. D. Pardo), but no explanations about Dom, Mia, and Jakob's mom. This is just too weird at this point.
Fortunately, there are several points that I still like about F9:
1). The flashback sequences (the stock car racing where Jack Toretto Dies, Dom beats Kenny Linder, and Dom races Jakob that leads the latter's departure from the family) are the best things about this movie. Vinnie Bennett and Finn Cole did great acting on portraying as Younger Dom and Jakob, respectively.
2). The ending; even though the ending looks like other fast & Furious movies, seeing the blue Nissan Skyline drives to the house gives me a good vibe.
3) The end credits' design (yes); the whole sequences reminds me of earlier Fast & Furious movies where those movies don't even have opening credits. Uniquely, this is the first Fast & Furious movies that don't show the title until the ending part.
For the conclusion, F9 is the lowest rated F&F movies in IMDB; beating 2 Fast 2 Furious. I think I'll give this movie 6/10.
