Himalaya (2024)
Pretty good FF, not perfect
I didn't have huge expectations for this low budget found footage movie but I was pleasantly surprised. I like the main actor who plays the host and for the most part things line up nicely as a "lost broadcast" style film. Let me remind you that this is definitely not a studio movie and there are some rough spots with the continuity and performances. But the snow cave looks really good and the story kept me interested most of the time. This movie involves a live search for a yeti during a live broadcast with a group of experts. There is a lot of decent banter and humor between the characters until it suddenly gets serious. I don't want to give too much away but the cave exploration does reveal some shocking discoveries and yields a few scares.. While this is considered a horror movie, it's not all that scary other than the few good jumps I mentioned. But the use of interesting myths and legends of the Himalayas combined with passable acting and an above average story allows me to recommend this decent little found footage flick.
Artifacts of Fear (2023)
Spooky Fun!
A fun movie to watch this spooky season! While not exactly terrifying, it's still creepy, funny and well acted. This is a lower budget horror flick that actually uses it's limitations to full advantage. Instead of trying to be slick with green screen effects and CGI imagery, this wee dreadful actually works because it's a character based anthology horror that feels old school and organic. The wrap-around story is entertaining and I'd put this in the same category with The Mortuary Collection. The music is the movie's greatest strength and it adds to the spooky and nostalgic atmosphere. Id say the overall style feels ripped from a 90's video store rental and I do love that!
The Nun (2018)
A guilty pleasure!
This is one of those films that feels convoluted in terms of story, but remains wonderful despite it's flaws. I will never get tired of seeing an iconic horror icon stalk the halls of a decrepit abbey. The films production design and overall atmosphere should be praised. The performances are solid and the only concern as a viewer is that things don't always track. But just as I get a bit frustrated, I think "Who cares?" and just give myself over to this richly wonderful, often funny and occasionally scary movie The Nun!
The Lighthouse (2019)
Art cinema that challenges
As easy as it is to get caught up in the beautiful look of this film. I believe its the cast that is the very soul of this movie. I cant say that I loved every minute of this film...it challenges, and dares you to speculate about the true nature of the men in that lighthouse. I can say that this fine directors other film "The Witch" is also a beautifully crafted and sometimes challenging film. This is all the more reason to pay close attention and soak in the subtle cues. I recommend this film and hope it will be remembered very well by film historians and fans alike.
Stay (2021)
Annabelle meets Paranormal Activity plus a mannequin
Don't mess with mannequins, old dolls, or anything real messed up that "comes with the building." Even though you can smell this plot a mile away, they at least do it a little differently here. This movie is lowest of the low budgets, but the sound is clean and the actors are pretty good. It's not as scary as the poster but it has a real good one near the end that got me.
