Resident Evil (2022)
Not as bad as expected
You know, it's not an entirely bad show.
It actually fits into the stories and lore of the Resident Evil games and there is a lot of nods to the games and quite a lot of easter eggs.
I kinda like the postapocalyptic setting of a world after Umbrella has screwed everything up. There are still 300 million people alive, so it explains why there's still things like Wi-Fi and functional societies.
The characters themselves also come with fairly nice and interesting backstories.
That being said, the acting is very uneven. I am not sold on the actor playing 28 year old Jade, though her 14 year old counterpart is great. It's a bit of a rollercoaster ride, when it comes to the acting in general.
And though I like the story in general and how it fits into the RE-universe as a whole, it certainly overlooks a lot of details from the games. In 2036, Umbrella is still hailed as a savior of the remainder of humanity, for one. In one shot, it even looked like the continent of North America was renamed "Umbrella." The incident in the Arklay Mountains have been successfully covered up. There's more stuff like this.
While the general look and feel of the different locations are fine, there's something about the show that feels... cheap. Perhaps they are just making the best of a low budget, I don't know, but something feels off.
Also, the zombies vary wildly in movement speed. They move at whatever speed the scenes require, which just irritates me!
Anyway, even with the negative stuff, I found season 1 entertaining. I don't know how invested Netflix is in this show, but if there is a season 2, it will have to improve on a lot of parameters or there certainly won't be a season 3.
Pirate Gold of Adak Island (2022)
Made in America
I read the premise of the show and went "Oooh, hunt for a lost pirate treasure! Interesting!"
I wondered why the show was 8x30 minutes though, it's a weird way to present a documentary. But I soon had my answer: this show is obviously made for an American audience that are used to this kind of repetitive, non-sensical storytelling.
Also, this is so very, VERY obviously staged. It is like watching one of those Storage Wars-type shows. I wouldn't be surprised if the people behind this show have a background in those kind of shows.
I lasted until episode 4, where "The Scientist" needs "The Inventors" to make a device to test layers of dirt. A device she more than once mentions that she has back home. Excuse me, why didn't you bring the god damn thing then? And also: why is this device not utilized in episode 1, as dating the soil to tell you how far down you would have to scan for the gold seems like an absolute must.
Rubbish.
Bob's Burgers (2011)
Meh
This is a perfectly fine show to run in the background while doing other, more important stuff. I binged the first 5 seasons because of the good reviews and people in my social circle who loves the show. After that, I watched the remaining episodes with less interest because I. Do. Not. Get. This. Show. It's not funny, it's not socially relevant and the characters are, for the most part, annoying and/or not interesting. Gene may be the most irritating character of all time, literally everything he says is stupid, annoying, juvenile and painful - and yes, all those at once.
The animations are all right and the voice acting is good. Besides Gene, whose voice is just as annoying as the personality of the character.
I would recommend this show if you need something in the background to watch with mild interest while you play around with your phone or does your taxes or tries to take s nap or something similarly interesting.
Slender Man (2018)
Don't...just don't
You know, I actually think the Slender Man mythos is quite interesting and has potential as a movie.
And if I try real hard, perhaps I can forget that this trainwreck exists and hope some one will make a decent movie out of the background material, in the near future.
The story is horrible and so is the acting. I am fairly certain I can produce better effects myself in MS Paint. The screen is also so dark, that you would think you were watching a certain episode of Game of Thrones.
One could go into details but much like the people behind this movie must have thought all through the creation of this garbage: why bother?
Taylor Tomlinson: Quarter-Life Crisis (2020)
Amazing
I did not know Taylor Tomlinson before I watched this special. I do now, and I am very happy about that! Great observations and punch lines delivered with confidence. Absolutely hilarious!
The Handmaid's Tale: Heroic (2019)
Something exciting almost happens! ...
...buuuut then it doesn't. This season has been the absolute best, at building up promises of the story moving forward, in an exciting way, but every single time it all falls flat.
I have no idea what the point of this episode was. The word "filler" comes to mind. The plot goes absolutely nowhere. I get that character development is important and there were some nice spots in there; June talking to the doctor, Janine trying to reconnect with the old June and Lydia and Space Pirate Janine's conversation. But you can't build a show on character development alone, there has to be a story that moves along and this is standing very, VERY still.
I am not about to give up on the show yet, but it has moved quite a long way, down the list, of shows I look forward to watch on a weekly basis.
