Mata Hari (1931)
Imagine Greta Garbo as Mata Hari!
The line from the trailer. Not the actress I would choose for Mata Hari, but Greta Garbo plays it well, I especially loved her acting at the end of a movie, where she departs from Ramon Novarro, and marches of to her execution as if she is marching to her coronation.
The plot is simple, Garbo plays Hari, an exotic dancer who has been seducing men for secrets of the Allies for the spymaster, Lewis Stone, on her mission, she seduces the general Lionel Barrymore and the innocent Lieutenant, Ramon Novarro, during the mission she falls for Novarro and things go wrong, when the general finds out she's a spy. The picture is set against a backdrop of glittering Paris.
The picture is Pre-Code, though we lost many of its famous scenes. Overrall the movie is okay, not one of Garbo's best but one you should watch as it's Garbo's most successful film. Ramon wasn't great to be honest. Lewis Stone never fails to impress me and Barrymore was enjoyable. Garbo was amazing her acting is one of her best.
