Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)
not great, but underrated clean fun
This film is kind of a cult classic...judging from comments, people have a love/hate relationship with the film...I would have to side with the love, because even though it is not a logical film, it is not meant to be, and is just fun.
As a film though, I have to say it is very detailed for a movie many people may brush off as "stupid" or "mindless." The little visual details and motifs make it competent in its direction and script (notice the stickers, gestures, dialogue parallels). However, it is a film very much made for its time period with its California syntax and references to 80's life. Noteworthy is Keanu Reeves' actual character and acting skills, which are much more apparent here than in ANY of his other films (Matrix I and II, Chain Reaction, Johnny Mneumonic, to name a few).
On the surface it may not be much of a film, but for those looking to have a fun time and who are willing to see past its marketed premise, it is a deep film and a gem to all those who love it.
ReBoot (1994)
Very Creative, Underrated
I still remember when this show was on I believe ABC. To me it was a very creative world, and painted with such detail as to make it believable (such as jokes told in binary). It brought to life the many activities of a home PC, much like Toy Story did with a children's playbox; we can only imagine, but wouldn't it be great if it were true? The show layout is similar to pokemon in that the show has a direction, but every episode almost stands by itself. They are all loosely connected, and it doesn't build too much except for a season finale (last show before it was cancelled off of its regular network) where MegaByte attacks mainframe and Bob seems dead. But overall a creative show that has the charm most TV series dont have today.
Hour of the Assassin (1987)
Worse than Johnny Mneumonic
This movie is horribly written, horribly directed, and the action sequences, are, well...horrible. The storyline is too simplistic, and the very first actions sequence...the car chase, is the worst I've seen. I often found myself wondering where the action is, as its editing could have used a lot of work to smoothly take the viewer along for the ride, instead of switching back and forth to different angles. Its so choppy each little shot could have stood by itself. The lead character, the assassin, is supposed to be a ex-green beret, and shows no evidence of that. No cool special moves or any special skill. Any bum could have been that character, and done a better job of it too. Also, it hints at a sex scene which isn't shown, all you see is a flash of breasts as she's changing. What the hell was that for? This movie is just so disconnected and pining for action sequences it's an embarrassment to the genre. Before this I thought Johnny Mneumonic and Shanghai Killer (one of Chow Yun-Fat's early movies) were the worst action movies I'd seen. It has now reached a new low. I'd only take this tape out again to erase it. Not worth the rental, not worth the view. Should have stayed one hour, like the title says. Better yet, should have not been made at all.
