The Godfather (1972)
One of the best films I have seen
What can I say about this masterpiece. Few words can describe The Godfather. This film is an excellent adaptation of the best seller novel. I have read the book and seen the film. I loved both, though the book is better since it gives more insight into the Italian mafia. But the movie is great.
I love crime dramas and gangster films. The Godfather was very well crafted. I come from India and many film directors love this film. In 2005 an Indian filmmaker made "Sarkar" which is inspired from The Godfather. Sarkar was good but nothing beats The Godfather. It is magnificent and hugely entertaining. No one can beat Mr.Francis Ford Coppola's version.
When it comes to the performances everyone do a great job. Marlon Brando and Al Pacino are the best in the film. Their performances have and will always inspire upcoming actors anywhere in the world. They live their characters as no one else. It is sad that Pacino never won an Oscar for any of The Godfather films. James Caan and Richard Castellino are very good as Sonny and Clemenza respectively.
All in all, this is a worldwide film, not to be missed by any person who loves good cinema. This will remain one of my favorites.
Lakshya (2004)
Great war film
I saw Lakshya two years after its release. I just loved this war film. It was technically brilliant like the camera-work, audiography, etc. I think Lakshya is one of the best war films made in India.
India should be proud of Lakshya and Farhan Akhtar. Lakshya is set in the 1999 Kargil war between India and its neighbor Pakistan. This war is very important in Indian history. This was a war where hundreds of soldiers died for their motherland and Lakshya was a befitting tale on the war as its backdrop.
Farhan has directed the film very realistically without making it too jingoistic like LOC Kargil. This film gives complete respect to the Indian Military Academy and the Indian army. The film shows that if a human being wants to achieve something in life, he can do it, come what may if he puts his heart and soul into it and that is what Karan Shergil did in the film.
The performances are top notch. I have always liked Hrithik Roshan and he is marvelous in this film. He is the best dancer in India. Amitji is also very good. Very strong acting from AB. Om Puri, another great actor should have been given more footage but he was also excellent. Preity was good. Overall, amazing experience.
Don (1978)
A classic Bachchan film
I saw the movie as a freshman in college and fell in love with this action thriller. It has every ingredient to keep the audience enthralled. It is fast paced with an amazing background score that you want to hear again and again. I still cannot get enough of the beginning of the film and its opening credits. It is just mind blowing.
Amitabh Bachchan, what can I say about this great actor. I love every aspect of him be it his hairstyle, intense manner of speaking or his dignified appearance in so many films such as K3G, Baghban and Deewaar (1975). In the case of Don Amitji gives a lot of life to the character he plays. He is larger than life in so many films and Don is a classic example. He has amazing screen presence and his dialogue delivery is the best in the business. To sum it Amitji is a great actor who has enthralled billions of fans around the world and I am one of them. I admire him immensely.
Other cast members do a very fine job. Zeenat Aman is sheer movie magic. Hats off to the cast and crew of the entire film which was very ahead of its times in the 70s. Music is wonderful especially yeh mera dil and kaike paan.
This classic cannot be beaten by any remake such as the 2006 version starring King Khan. His version was good but Amitji's Don is the best.
Don (2006)
Excellent film
Don was an excellent film and a very good remake of the 1978 blockbuster. I am a fan of action thrillers and was extremely lucky to see this film on its second day of release. From the time I heard about Don being remade I was too excited because I loved the original.
I was even more excited to know Farhan Akhtar, the maker of DCH and Lakshya would be directing it. His previous films were too good and I must say Farhan has done a wonderful job with a remake of a classic. Farhan shows that he is one of the best in India. His films are too entertaining and classy. Don is a class act by Farhan.
I am crazy about the film's music. It is very contemporary and foot tapping except yeh mera dil. I did not like this song but on the whole Shankar Ehsaan Loy do a great job.
When it comes to the performances no complaints. Shah Rukh Khan takes on the big challenge of getting into the role which was done by the shahenshah of bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan in a beautiful way. SRK gives an amazing performance. It was fun to see SRK doing something entirely different from his previous films. He is very good with action.
The others in the cast do a commendable job. Priyanka was very impressive as Roma. Boman Irani, Arjun Ramphal and Kareena do a good job. Om Puri and Isha Koppikar should have been given more footage. All in all an entertaining film.
Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006)
Did not like it
I did not like KANK. I prefer Karan Johar's previous films KKHH, K3G and KHNH. They were well made and entertaining films but not KANK. The movie was a torture. They showed New York well though.
Music was good. Mitwa, rock n roll soniye and where's the party tonight were composed well. Cinematography was nice. When it comes to the performances Abhishek, Amitji and Preity were good. It was fun to see Amitji and his son coming up with such commendable performances. Rani was not up to the mark. SRK has not done a good job. His work is bad. He over acts, same style of acting and he brings nothing new to the role. Better luck next time Karan and SRK.
