Dahaad (2023)
Tight screenplay
One of the things that plagues most OTT series nowadays is filler episodes that do not add anything to the story. Their only purpose is to add more episodes. This series in comparison is tightly edited and there are no unnecessary filler scenes. All the actors have given their best performance. The star of the show is definitely Vijay Varma. He does full justice to his character. Sonakshi Sinha has worked on her fitness for this series. She fits the role of a cop perfectly. I am used to seeing Gulshan Devaiah in goofy roles. But in this series he plays a mature police inspector, who is a family man. Got to see his serious side. He has acted very well. I did not find any shortcoming in the series. My guess is most of the low reviews are for political reasons. That is unfair to the actors and the makers of the series. Watch it for the great acting and writing.
Friday Night Plan (2023)
Watch it for the brothers
Babil Khan and Amrith Jayan never get out of character. I have two boys and could totally relate to some of their behavior. The movie is tightly edited and sticks to the core subject of the two brothers. Babil's character is awesome. At a time when we see irresponsible teen behavior, this is a character that wants to take responsibility for his actions. In doing so he is also setting an example for his younger brother. Running away from your problems is not a solution. In most cases, when you face your problems the outcome is not as bad as you are afraid of. Facing the situation and saying the truth takes courage. In spite of the underlying message, the movie never gets preachy. There is a light-heartedness throughout and all situations are skillfully portrayed. Ninad Kamat has a small but impactful role. Before punishing our kids, we have to remember our childhood and look through that lens. We need more mature police officers like him. Overall, awesome movie. If you have young boys, definitely show it to them.
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (2022)
Can make a grown man cry
I watched this movie with my kids and I could tell they were not enjoying it as much as I was. This movie can be appreciated more by grown ups than kids. It's not a happy-go-lucky movie. The movie deals with very serious issues of war, death, loss, abuse and grief. I was surprised how so many themes and emotions were so eloquently captured in an animated movie. The abuse scenes by the carnival owner, Count Volpe were reminiscent of the abuse scenes in Nightmare Alley. There were very few funny scenes. The overall theme of the movie is dark but extremely enjoyable. Life is short and even though you may live forever, the people around you may not. Cherish every moment you have in this world with your loved ones.
Comicstaan (2018)
I enjoyed it
I enjoyed the first season. The second season was a letdown with excessive cursing. Looks like they took the audience feedback for Season 3. The cursing and toilet humor was mostly absent. Really enjoyed the Season 3. It was good to see that everybody was having a good time. The mentors, judges and hosts were all relaxed. There was no drama like some other reality shows. It was also good to see the growth of the contestants. By the season finale, its hard to believe these are amateur comedians. All the performances in the finale were top notch.
Toolsidas Junior (2022)
Clean, light hearted family movie
I watched this with my 8 yo who has recently started playing pool. We both enjoyed the movie. The technical details about the game were pretty accurate. The kid can hold a stick. His stance and bridge were very good, which tells me he put effort in the role. The best thing was the subject was given a light hearted treatment. Even some of serious issues were addressed without unnecessary emotional drama.
Nightmare Alley (2021)
Watch it for the ending
I don't understand the low IMDB rating. Its a very good movie. The ending was a little predictable for me because NPR's Fresh Air had done a terrible job of giving away much of the ending. The ending scene is one of the best performances I have seen. Bradley Copper did complete justice to his role and the scene. He looks and acts like the state his character his come to. The movie is also visually beautiful. They have done a great job of recreating the 40s.
Comedy Premium League (2021)
Cursing aside, pretty funny show
Minus one star for the excessive cursing. Other than that, jokes were fresh and the burns were awesome. I was very impressed by Aaadar Malik's musical performances. He is extremely talented. Rahul Subramanian is the clown of the class and has consistently funny remarks. I think, if they cut down on the cursing, more people would enjoy the show. The cursing did get a little distasteful at times and did not bring any additional value to the jokes.
Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi (2019)
Great acting by an ensemble cast
The movie has many characters and everyone has done an amazing job. The characters reflect our south Asian culture and you can relate to all the characters at some level. In spite of so many actors, the movie does not feel crowded. Kudos to the director and cinematographer for managing such a diverse cast and not letting any individual actor steal the show. Naseeruddin Shah makes his presence felt in a brief role. Great job by the writers for managing to create truly humorous moments in the middle of a tragedy.
