Pet Sematary: Bloodlines (2023)
Enjoyable horror based on familiar Stephen King character
Firstly, this film does not deserve the many negative reviews. The story is pretty solid and has a real King like atmosphere. Not heavy on visual gore but is well handled so that there is no doubt about what is happening. Not like a gory film with cut scenes, more of a carefully handled general audience friendly set up. Most people watching this will have seen previous films or read the book and should not be disappointed. Although a prequel it stands up on its own and builds the story around the town, the people and the sematary but still leaving room for further expansion rather than any more remakes.
The Fall of the House of Usher (2023)
Great adaptation
Really enjoyed this. Very clever writing, bringing all the Poe stones into one clever overarching tale, keeping all the essential EA Poe tales close to the original but in a modern setting. The links between the stories is so well done and you can't wait for the next episode. Great to see Mark Hamilton playing such a different character, and very well.
You must pay such close attention to each episode, especially the more quiet moments to appreciate the subtle attention to detail that is easily missed if you don't. Very well done to all involved and please Mike Flanagan, don't stop producing such great work.
The Midwich Cuckoos (2022)
Midwich Cuckoo's
Very enjoyable version, kept the essence of Wyndham's novel, brought up to date to make it plausible in the modern era. I don't like all the wokeness but here it never felt ethnicity was pushed, just part of modern life. Yes the kids didn't all have white hair and glowing eyes but they were all creepy, well done to the young cast. Great to see British sci Fi back on the agenda. Heartily recommend, forget the trolls.
Day of the Dead (2021)
Day of the dead (Return of the living dead)
Episode 1 was ok, a bit busy trying to set everything up but episode 2 was very much like the classic Return of the living dead with the dry humor and the practical effects. If they keep that up it could turn into a fun show and a classic.
