David Brent: Life on the Road (2016)
Quirky, and Cringe-Worthy...in a bad way.
For me, this film was...well odd, and just not great. It was quirky, and it made me cringe on numerous occasions. The humor in it is very flat and seems forced. They went with a documentary style approach much like "The Office", but I really don't think that was the approach that should've been taken, as it really didn't fit with what the movie was going for. While somewhat entertaining, I found myself eagerly waiting for the film to be over. I had a few chuckles, but the rest of it was just slow, boring, and hard to get through. Alas, I managed to watch from beginning to end. It's not the worst film I've seen, but it's definitely far from any of the blockbuster comedies. I'd recommend it for late night watching, or something to have on in the background.
Dog Gone (2023)
Good Potential, Horrible Execution
"Dog Gone" sounded and was advertised as if it was going to be the next big dog movie, much like "Marley and Me," "Beethoven" and "Air Bud." However, this movie was FAR from those blockbusters. The acting was decent. But that's about it for this one. The writing seemed like it was written by a bunch of middle schoolers, it was predictable, and it just didn't hit me in the feels like the successful dog movies I listed above. The only part I actually enjoyed was the ending. But up until that point, everything was slow, boring, and "meh" at best. This one flopped in my book. I think there should've been more scenes with the dog itself to get the audience to form that relationship with the dog first. Once the dog ran off, it was hardly in the movie. There were no cut scenes showing what the dog was up to while it was on the run, and the whole movie was based on them finding the dog. While the story of this is true, the movie failed to impress.
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022)
A Swing...and a Flop.
Growing up, I loved Weird Al Yankovic. His slapstick humor, his music, and all of his other shenanigans. So it's easy to say that I had high hopes for this film.
The film started off great, made me laugh quite a few times, and was obviously not intending to be serious, as Weird Al himself hints at the beginning. It was funny and engaging in the beginning, had some celebrity appearances, and the storyline was easy to follow. But as the movie went along, unfortunately the humor seemed to get repetitive, dull, and honestly...a little boring and unamusing. It got to the point where I was wondering when the movie was going to end. I didn't hate the movie, but I also didn't love it, and kind of expected better.
The Curse of Bridge Hollow (2022)
Good Movie for Kids
The movie is definitely geared towards a younger audience for sure. However there was a bit of humor for the adults and some of the scenes could be considered fearsome for more sensitive kiddos.
The acting was average at best. Most lines delivered weren't believable, and cheesy, and it seemed like I was watching an amateur high school play. Marlon Wayans played the dad, and usually I enjoy his acting, but this was not the case for this movie. He and the other actors seemed to lack chemistry and drive. The best actor was the lady that played "Mrs. Hawthorne." The storyline was well produced and it was easy to follow. Special effects and CGI were actually done pretty well, and I especially liked the spider scene in the nursing home when they sprayed them with the acid. I will say however, when the giant spider came out, the CGI on that was definitely shotty and lacked detail. Overall, the kids would love the movie, but it's definitely not in it's way to win any Oscar award.
Metal Lords (2022)
A Good Mixture of Awkward, Comedy, and Drama
Okay, so I will say that I might be a bit biased, because I am a metal musician. However I will try to remain as fair as I can.
Firstly, the movie has a great cast, and everyone played their parts well. The film had a good flow to it that kept the audience's interest. A lot of the film is quirky and meant to be light-hearted, but does have a little drama mixed in. However, it did seem that some of the humor took away from the main plot in some parts. The music in the movie was excellent, however it was very obvious that the actors were not actually playing.
The Boys of St. Vincent (1992)
Hardest movie I've ever watched
This movie was extremely difficult to watch. Mostly because I suffered the same abuse when I was a kid, and it triggered some haunting memories. I don't regret watching it though. There were so many scenes where the boys showed so much courage! It's easy for adults to scare kids into keeping their mouths shut. I really felt the emotions that the film was trying to have the audience feel. Heartbreak, fear, sadness, and thankfully there were a few moments of comic relief to break it up and releave the hard emotions. There is a second part that Ill be watching, as this part of the movie didn't have a hopeful ending. Because of that, I suggest not watching this movie, unless you're going to watch the 2nd part.
Amusement (2008)
Definitely Not Amusing or Scary
The movie first started out okay with the convoy and the lady jumping out of the semi to save herself. I found myself intrigued, and was on the edge of my seat to find out what was next. Unfortunately, the opening scenes are why I gave this film 2 stars.
After the opening scenes, next was a few scenes of a babysitter and two boys in a house with a "stuffed" clown room. One of the clowns obviously wasn't stuffed and in fact real. Of course, the clown suddenly comes alive in a really cheesy fashion, and just starts trying to kill the two boys and the babysitter. This was not interesting, as there was no storyline or plot development. It was just a clown chasing people. The movie continued on, and so did the plot that didn't exist. This movie was a mixture of all the bad acting, and horrible and confusing storyline. This movie, failed to keep my attention, and is not worth watching.
