Silo (2023)
A bit of a drag
The idea is good but the execution could have been so much better. I kind of think this is down to writing and mostly directing. I just can't believe the actors can be so bad at times, I mean amateurs can blow this out of the park and these pros seem to compromise their craft all too many times to ignore it. An example (of many sadly): The scene with Walk not being able to walk past the door was laughable to say the least.
Having said that there is an element of wanting to know what is behind all this and I just hope is not a flop.
For some reason the title musical theme reminds me of Westworld, so kudos to the composer, I think he gets it.
Severance: The We We Are (2022)
Cutting edge
Brilliant. Full disclosure, I watched it twice, back to back so that I can savour every little detail and acting nuance.
It is not everyday that a series season finale reveals pretty much everything and yet we ended up with a cliffhanger full of possibilities.
The concept of severance has numerous tangents that can occupy the viewers mind for the long awaited season 2. Hopefully the show will continue as strong as the end of season one.
As a soundtrack lover I will also wait excitedly to more ingenious uses of tunes in the show. Who would have thought Paul Anka conversing eerily with Motorhead from one episode to another.
The Night of the Hunter (1955)
Good, but not that good
I am not sure I understand the highest of high praises for this film...it is a simple story, good for kids, nowhere near scary, with some undeniably good moments: say the love-hate pair inked at each hand of the villain (Robert Mitchum). It is thank to him that the film avoids a disintegration to a childish fairy tale.
In fact I thought the director seems to be overly influenced by the likes of great masters such as Ingmar Bergman (think of the Seventh Seal). As such to my eyes the film atmosphere did not even feel original, more like a copycat. A good one, don't get me wrong.
This is indeed a unique film, a bit difficult to categorise as others already pointed out, yet it does seem fair that never reached mass audiences.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Exactly as the film name says
Trying too hard to state the obvious. Too fast, no time to be ... original but still boring fighting scenes ... weak script overall. Michelle Yeoh is indeed a joy to watch hence the 2 stars.
Lapsis (2020)
Analogue Metaverse
The premise of the film is metaversial. Yet this siloed metaverse exists in the real world instead of the digital one, with the exception of cool medallion names and points that can buy things. Focuses on only one character when there was an opportunity to interweave much more into the cblr world. Feels like a film ahead of its time with good chances of becoming a cult one.
La nuit des rois (2020)
A tale
The spontaneous reenactment of the story as it was told by the Roman was something extraordinary. The choreography, the singing, the timing, all were impeccable.
Dune (2021)
Begging for more
Epic adventure that makes marvel films look like toddler toys. These are dark times for the house of Atreides yet mother and son manage to survive against all odds. The pace sometimes feels uneven, I definitely preferred the 2nd half with the end leaving me begging for more.
All Creatures Great & Small (2020)
Touching Chords
I know this is not a masterpiece, yet it is so heart warming that makes you feel touched, in fact (and I know how cliche this sounds), it makes me want to be a better person.
How serendipitous it was that I found out about this show by a fellow rambler in a lovely walk exploring glorious British countryside.
Uncanny (2015)
What's your primary objective?
A bit of a surgical ambience all around, but still well executed. There are definitely some cheaky tricks that I should not have missed, but then again buying into it all was part of the fun.
Pig (2021)
Culinary delight
I stepped into this film totally unaware that I would be served a three course meal of the most exquisite ingredients...love, passion, will, strength, loss, craft, ... let go and you will also enjoy. And what was this radio station the corvette was tuned in?
Clickbait (2021)
Whodunit?
It keeps you hooked despite the obvious shortcomings (average acting was a bit of a bummer for me). The story unfolds in a low key kind of way, which is not all too bad. Yet I couldn't stop thinking that all this cannot be real, it must be some kind of a joke... the answer was so unexpected I would probably have preferred one of the other possibilities presented during the series.
The North Water (2021)
Rough Sail
Starts slow but picks up and delivers the journey promised. The amorality of Henry Drax is so raw and in your face, makes it difficult to take it in. Yet, he is still a pitiful puppet of the usual evil forces of his and any era for that matter. The suffering of man is at the heart of this mini series, no-one can escape it, only learn to live with it.
Retfærdighedens ryttere (2020)
Crossfire entertainment
I had to happily suspend my disbelief many times, who cares, this was bordering magical reality at its best. Only with lots of coincidence in the mix. The realm of outsiders and outcasts lives on!!!
The Green Knight (2021)
Headless
So slow, put me to sleep early on, woke up and put the effort to watch through to the end. Well, there isn't much hapenning after all. I was projecting to the current environmental crisis the world is facing, I don't know why. The critics miss the point that a movie has to entertain, or else is self indulgence and as such of limited value.
A Quiet Place Part II (2020)
No surprises
Same as the previous one, still can keep you on your toes!!!
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Mediocre
Had a quick nap in the middle of it all, when woke up kept on watching, didn't feel like I was missing anything. A couple of laughs and fancy fighting scenes does not cut it for me!!!
The Goob (2014)
Goob job!
They manage to depict Norfolk so dreary is indeed a feat !!! Naturally Goob steals the show, his step dad balances up the energy by being so intense and fearsome. Great soundtrack.
