Quanta (2019)
Something went wrong
It's hard to know where to start with this, it has some really interesting ideas but it seemed to get partway into exploring them and then ditching them for another idea completely.
it's starts out with an aging scientist trying to prove a theory regarding dark radiation which after some setbacks (setbacks are a cool band by the way) he is given a lab at a university on the condition that he teams up with some early 20s guy who is abrasive etc.
they accidentally discover an alien signal, download it and give it to someone to help translate it, at which point that storyline seems to end in favour of a storyline where they use the machine that picked up the alien signal to upload data directly to to the younger guys head; it's not clear whether it's the alien data or just random data but the upshot is that he can now smell the ingredients in the older guys cup of tea and other heightened senses, this storyline seems to go nowhere as the next storyline of arguments over who owns the rights to the invention comes into play.
the young guy randomly sleeps with a female friend he's known forever, cheating on his pregnant girlfriend, they split up for a bit and then he turns up to the ultrasound, says sorry and she forgives him - the female friend isn't mentioned again.
the young guy also shaves off his hair, walks around the street naked, the older guy somehow walks into him, takes him back to the lab and extracts the data the younger guy uploaded and then sets fire to the machine he's worked on his entire life that can pick up alien signals, discover dark radiation and instantly teach people anything because...I don't know - whatever. he avoids being legally punished for this because some people committed suicide or something (I assume the company that took his machine tried it on them and he knew about it)
I gave it 3 stars because the acting was decent and the ideas were good but everyone involved in this movie must have some kind of severe case of ADHD or something.
Curvature (2017)
good god!
First of all; what a criminal waste of Linda Hamilton! she is in about 2 scenes totaling about 3 minutes or so (I could be off on that by a few minutes but point is, she may aswell have not been in it).
that out of the way, do you know how they say that when an actor is so bad that you just know they've screwed their way into the role? well that's exactly the vibe I get from the lead in this - she nailed the "looking miserable" part but delivered her lines so unconvincingly that I honestly think I could have done a better job at it and I am neither female nor an actor.
basically it's a timeloop film, it doesn't really explain that the version of her that started the loop and is using the version of her with no memory (symptom of time travel) spent a week planning and leaving clues for herself before hand.
one of the other massive annoyances in this film is that the reason the husband is murdered is because his partner wants to use the machine they've spent billions working on and the husband doesn't want to (yeah, why make a time machine if you don't want to use it right?!) at no point in the film did they demonstrate that the machine would be detrimental to anyone, yet the stupid woman blows it up because her idiot of a husband didn't want to use something he spent years of his life working on, frankly he deserved to get murdered for being a colossal idiot.
when a film makes you sympathize with the "bad guy" and the lead characters are all upstaged by 3 minutes of someone who has criminally been made an extra (Linda Hamilton) you know you're in for a bad ride.
Time After Time (2017)
plain
this is not really a review, just a rant of a few things that bothered me;
the 1st thing in this that really annoyed me was the section where the unbelievably good looking curator is telling HG why she's single; she says she always gets knocked back by men on internet dating because they say she is too plain looking (paraphrase).
also, I don't understand why John enters the 21st century and adapts immediately to it, doesn't seem at all surprised by any of the tech, knows how to use a cellphone etc. yet the guy who invents a time machine is a bumbling idiot who needs his hand holding by the "plain" curator. and why on earth did she start that "you're a misogynist" shaming crap with a serial killer? I think his problems are a little deeper than just being a "misogynist".
Arrival (2016)
what is the point
I basically watched this because I'm unwell, needed something quiet to watch and knew that Jóhann Jóhannsson and Max Richter wrote the score; on that basis alone I knew it would be slow and uneventful however I was just left thinking "why did they bother coming to earth?" all they did was came to teach someone their language and then bugger off. someone suggested here that the aliens were in fact somehow Louise and Ian however that still doesn't account for the other 11 ships, was there a UK,Australian,Pakistani,Chinese etc Louise and Ian as well or are the US Louise and Ian special snowflakes? and you could argue the ouroboros style writing supports that idea but I doubt the film is clever enough for that and the artist behind the language just looked at a coffee ring left behind by his/her cup and thought "that'll do". then all the stuff with her daughter dying, what was the point in adding that - they could have just made a film about a couple and a dying daughter and fu*ked off all the alien stuff altogether - that would probably have been a much more emotionally compelling film to see.
ultimately this is a film for hipsters who are going to claim they understand some deeper meaning in this film, they'll write gushing reviews in their online magazines while the rest of us are left feeling somewhat empty and angry at knowing we basically died for 2 hours.
Continuum (2012)
brilliant
I won't say too much about this, I really love it, I love the fact they haven't made the lead character one of those over the top bitchy types to make her seem "stronger" the fact she has emotion and dilemmas is what makes her so appealing as a character for me - that and she is beautiful but not in the unrealistic way.
the other thing the shows writers have done which is pretty clever is to blur the line between who is good and who isn't. There are times when you think that the group of "terrorists" are trying to do a good thing but in the wrong way and kiera is doing the wrong things believing that they are the right thing through years of being told those things - very much like I suspect any culture does. they put across the point that everyone is the hero of their own story with the belief that what they are doing is for the greater good - I would love to see more shows do things like this.
LOL (2012)
ow, my head
first of all there is nothing I could say to spoil this film, whoever wrote it already achieved that
I couldn't get through the film - I have a soft spot for Mileys films, I liked Hannah Montana the movie and the last song and I like her voice. so you know my loathing for this film isn't based on a loathing of Miley.
If this film was pointing out how much of todays teenagers are self obsessed vile creatures then job done - however I am guessing the audience is supposed to sympathise with the characters.
the first interaction with the mother in this film is Miley stripping off right in front of her to have a shower and thus an argument ensuing about the Brazilian she had done - seriously?! who in the hell acts like this?! what Teenager on this planet strips off in front of a parent?!
the scene editing is relentless, there is no time for the film to breath. in fact as someone who suffers migraines chronically, someone who has had brain scans on many occasions for cluster headaches I can tell you this with some degree of certainty that if I was charged with putting a migraine into film form - this film is pretty much what you'd get.
Also just for your information teenagers - "LOL" is an abbreviation we were using in the 90s when we invented the internet as it is now, go make up your own stuff!
