Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
Brilliant! Absolutely Brilliant!
It was truly wonderful! I was so pleased. Everyone keeps saying that they skimmed the book too much, but I disagree. Unless every average movie-goer can sit through a eight hour movie, they cut it down perfectly.
The biggest complaint was that Hermione's scene at the end with the logic puzzle was cut out, but it had to be. Books have different paces and give diffierent feeling then movies. If that scene had been in there it would have slowed down the action too much to make the final scene between Harry and Voldemort seem important or exciting. All the scenes that were cut were cut for good reason. Either they weren't necessary or they would be explained/delved into further in the other movies, so they could cut them.
The Quidditch match was done beautifully and the actors (especially the kids) were spectacular. The story was not driven by special effects or scenery, and gave a heart-warming feeling at the end. Yet another lovely score by John Williams! The excitement was in all the right places, the sets and costumes really made you feel like you were inside Harry's world. The Dursley's were perfectly selected, and hilarious. All of the teachers and Hagrid fit there roles wonderfully, Harry, Ron and Hermione even more so. It was a fantastic tribute to the books. Well done! The only other things to say is -
Truly Magical!!!
Enterprise (2001)
I didn't think they'd be able to do it, but they've done it!
I'm a huge fan of the original Star Trek series. I wasn't there from the beginning, in fact I was a baby when ST movie #4 came out in 1986, but the original cast was always my favorite. I liked next Generation a lot (a lot, a lot, a lot), but I wasn't thrilled with DS9 or Voyager.
So when I heard they were making a new series I was excited. Then I heard that they were making it before Captain Kirk's time, and I was vexed. I knew they would have better sets and special effects - that wasn't ok with me. They also had the nerve to make the ship another Enterprise! Any original fan would argue that Kirk, his crew and their Enterprise were supposed to be the first. I really didn't want this series to come out until I went to the Star Trek website and thought I'd look at the pictures they had of the Enterprise crew. Then I saw Scott Bakula was going to be the Captain! I was also a fan of Quantum Leap, a series he starred in in the 80's. If I had to choose a captain he'd have been my first choice.
After finding out this info I decided that I'd watch the first episode... and it was fantastic...
The story was compelling, and the characters reminded me of the first crew of the Enterprise we ever saw - Captain Kirk and Co. were back in a way, for me at least.
The crew is wonderful.
* Captain Archer has just the right presence and all the right traits to make a fabulous leader. You can see how he'll be the mold for the future captains in the later series'.
* T'Pol is the pure model Vulcan - she's no Spock, but if she was the character wouldn't be half as fun. The arguments sure to continue between herself Archer and Trip will make the series interesting.
* 'Trip' Tucker has the emotion of doctor McCoy and the eagerness of a true explorer. He's a perfect personality for the chief engineer.
* Hoshi Sato is great to watch because she is one of the first crew members I've ever seen get scared on a mission. It's nice to know that at some point, people weren't expecting to see anything or anyone, they would actually freak out on occasion.
* Malcolm Reed adds just the right touch of humor and has a great personality. I love the fact that we have an Armory officer here, and the fact that he's a bit shy but loves to blow things up makes him a lovable character - I'm really looking forward to seeing more of him in the future.
* Travis Mayweather - the 'space boomer' concept is brilliant and he's wonderful. He's very sweet and he's the one who's not completely clueless out there.
* Dr. Phlox - what can you say other then 'we love him'! He's hilarious, and I love all the creatures and stuff that he's stocked in sickbay.
I'm very excited about this show and I can wait until next weeks episode! Keep up the good work!
Flight of the Navigator (1986)
I love this movie!
I started watching this movie as a child cause it was on the Disney Channel all the time. I love it! It's a wonderful story and a great cast! I wanted a Max of my own! This was one of the early movies that sparked my interest in science fiction (I'm a sci-fi fanatic). It is truly a treat!
The Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time (1998)
This is the best computer game in the world!
I first played this in 1999 - my dad said it had gotten good ratings. Though it was a little confusing at first (it is the third in a trilogy - I recommend playing the first two even though they were supposedly not as a good as Legacy of Time, just to get the background - if you don't, you can probably piece it together from the booklet and the game itself like I did)I immediately fell in love with it! The story was brilliantly done with a great ending. The characters were fun and realistic (actually real people on the screen!) and Arthur the AI (played by Matt Weinhold) was absolutely hilarious! The graphics were the best I've ever seen on a computer game, and the complicated plot with all sorts of twists and turns was just what I needed. Anyone who likes sci-fi, ancient civilizations, action, and real characters(for a change) will love it! After playing this game, I haven't had the patience to play others... none of them have come even close to Legacy of Time...
The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
Wonderful Film!
This movie was wonderful! It's fun for children cause it's a mystery they can understand and fun for adults cause of all the Sherlock inside jokes. It had a fun story and is just the thing to brighten up anyone's day!
