A great movie, if you don't insist on comparing with the Hollywood original!

If you are the sort who loves to criticize a Bollywood movie because it's 'inspired' from a Hollywood original, then this one is not for you! If you don't have access to the Usual Suspects DVD and are a Bollywood buff (both of which apply to me!), then this one is definitely for you! This movie is basically all about the story. It's a great thriller with a heart-stopping ending. Anil Kapoor stars in a different role, but hams in parts. Arshad Warsi is, as usual, a delight. Emraan Hashmi, Irfan Khan, Suniel Shetty, Sushma Reddy (debutante) put in good efforts. The only let-down is Tanushree Dutta who, in the absence of acting skills, allows her cleavage to do all the talking. The songs are hummable. Overall the movie has a smooth look and fast pace. A must for Bollywood thriller buffs -- if there are such!

Dhoom 2 (2006)

As good as any Hollywood flick
23 December 2006
First the comparison with Dhoom 1. It is repetitive in parts, especially because of the irritating Ali (Uday Chopra), who has outlived his utility in the first part. On the other hand, this has Hrithik and Ash, and is basically all about the duo! Abhishesk as Inspector Jai provides the continuity in the story, but this is Hrithik's film all the way. He packs in a great performance, looks awesome, fights, dances, cries, laughs and even kisses (yes, the infamous kiss!) all the way. Just watch this for him. Ash looks fabulous and puts in a great performance as well. The songs are a let down, except for the title number Dhoom machale. The story is good, however the ending is a let-down as compared with the first part. Don't listen to your pals who tell you that this is copied from numerous Hollywood movies. It's just that the intellectuals are jealous because Bollywood has finally managed to look as good as Hollywood!

Socha Na Tha (2005)

A refreshingly sweet and romantic movie
23 December 2006
The story of how Viren (Abhay Deol) and Aditi (Ayesha Takia) are supposed to get married, then they don't, then they do, then they don't and so on! Abhay Deol is just about okay, looking slightly over-weight and older for his age. Ayesha Takia is very sweet and excels in this role. Sandhya Mridul is completely wasted but the rest of the cast (Suersh Oberoi, Ayesha Jhulka, Rati Agnihotri etc.) give decent performances. Overall it's a very refreshing movie from the Director who gave us the sweet romantic TV series 'Rishtey' on Zee, many years back. The songs are not too great, except the final romantic duet which is pleasantly hummable.
