The Pit (1981)
I loved this flick!
9 May 2002
I've heard a lot about this movie, each time hearing it was boring, stupid, pointless, etc. Ok not really boring but definitely the latter of the complaints. I recently acquired a copy and from start to finish, I was having the time of my life. The movie just threw me for a loop time and time again. At first I felt bad for the main character, Jamie. He's looked down upon and pretty much hated by the local people. But after he acted perverted on several occasions (which grants the viewer with a handful of RANDOM GRATUITOUS BREAST SHOTS!!!!) I called into question how I felt about him. And another thing that confused me was Jamie's demonic Teddy Bear (which may have been the main character originally, hence the film's original title "Teddy"). But I ignored that fact since it added to the feeling that maybe Jamie was crazy, or just didn't get the love and appreciation he needed. And the Pit itself? It contains four flesh eating beasties that Jamie names the Tra-la-logs (or Trolls, but that isn't nearly as much fun to say). Jamie kind of treats the monstrous creatures as pets, first feeding them beef he purchases with his babysitters money; later feeding "nasty people" to the Tralalogs. All in all, I liked this one. It's different, it's strange, and there are plenty of funny scenes (and the occasional breast shot for the guys) that keep it interesting. Plus it has a great (but somewhat predictable) ending. I don't know about anyone else, but I'd certainly sit and watch it again.

Panic Room (2002)
5/10
It reaches the highest peak, then falls off...
4 April 2002
Ok, yes I enjoyed this movie. Yes it was made well, the acting is good, and the sheer thought of being trapped in a "panic room" is eerie. But what ruined the movie for me was its ending, or rather the lack thereof. To me, what makes or breaks a movie is it's beginning and ending. If your movie opens with a lot of action then it has to go out with a big bang! Now by no means did this movie open in a huge way (I did like how the credits actually loomed over New York City though...this WAS set in New York right?) but it seemed as if the director was unable to think up a way to end it. The last ten minutes are predictable and the ending scenes just seem to have been tacked on. This is only MY opinion however, so I do suggest you see this film. My final judgment for Panic Room is a 5 out of 10.

Things (1993)
4/10
Definitely not the best horror anthology in the world but...
24 January 2002
I recently picked up a copy of this film for $6.00 at my local Hollywood Liquidators retailer. The film looked fairly bad and I knew I must have it! It's basically a horror anthology with two short horror tales told within a main story. This framework plot does come together in the end (quite unexpectedly too). It's a decent film but it's dragged down by low production values. The acting is pretty bad, except for a few of the lead ladies. The effects are amateurish at best and the nudity is less than you may have expected. Generally the title refers to the two fake and disgusting beasties seen in the film. You're better off seeing the Creepshow movies, the Trilogies of Terror, or the Willies.
