Unbelievable (2019)
Strong performances, terrifying story
Really strong performances and wonderful female leads in this terrifying story made all the more frightening by its reality. I did feel it was a little long and it didn't hold my attention all the time but when it was at its best it was terrific. Solid 7.
A Confession (2019)
Hit and miss true crime drama
Some lovely moments here and there and nice acting but this felt like I'd seen it all before. Far too long. Could have been one episode and packed more punch.
Appropriate Adult (2011)
Excellent dramatisation
Excellent dramatisation of this deeply disturbing case. Respectfully done with classy performances and simple but effective direction. Seriously gripping.
Deceit (2021)
Cinematic styling elevates this excellent true crime drama
Beautifully shot, terrific performances and a script that sizzles with a mix of verbatim and written dialogue, this outstanding drama is a world away from most British true crime. It feels like a reinvention of the genre and is a truly compelling watch. Sion Daniel Young turns in a superb performance as Stagg and we feel every ounce of his suffering as he's targeted by the unstoppable Niamh Algar as Lizzie James. Eddie Marsan is gently terrifying as the criminal psychologist out of his depth. I've never seen anything quite like this before. An absolute 10/10.
