Shinseiki Evangelion (1995)
Schrodinger's series; a 10/10 show with a bad plot.
Plot: 4/10
Characters: 8/10
Effects and visuals: 6/10
Music: 9/10
Philosophy: 10/10
Overall: 10/10
This anime seems to do the impossible; it makes a really sub-par storyline into a philosophical masterpiece, achieving a 10 with several mediocre elements. The plot is simple, repetitive and bland. The characters are interlocked and crafted, but dare I say have bad charisma? The visuals are fine, perhaps nostalgic to some, and the music is brilliant.
However, what sets Evangelion apart from everything else is it's philosophy. As a young teen writing this; it has engraved a deeply empathetic and even sympathetic relationship with it into my soul. Everything is relatable to the average person; the seemingly meaningless motion of time; the crippling shackles of determinism; the inescapable erotic desire of human beings. Evangelion has taught me to think of life not as a journey (like every motivational speech ever), but as a phenomenon. As a random occurrence in the currents of fate. And in a sense, that has energised my desire to make life count - but at the same time, eased my worries by putting the scale of everything into perspective. Evangelion should not be watched as a TV show; it is an evocation of an emotional statement made by a depressed man. In that way, it is a thesis, except "cruel angel" is replaced by "sad dude".
Therefore, Evangelion, I thank you.
