Doctor Who: Flux: Chapter Six - The Vanquishers (2021)
Chibnall ruined the lore for this
"Don't rate the episode before it airs!!!" say all the people giving it a 10/10 before it finished... yeah... do you know the word hypocrite?
Well, I watched it before reviewing and... it was terrible. Overstuffed, things happening with no set up, almost none of the questions Chibnall wrecked the lore to raise have been answered... and the episode was just boring as heck. Maybe the pretty colours and action will keep the kids entertained but this episode is good for nothing else.
Doctor Who: Flux: Chapter Five - Survivors of the Flux (2021)
It's fine I guess
It's just teleporting from one info dump to another without much substance or narrative through-line and some good and nonsensical moments scattered through out.
By this stage in the series we should know everything we need to for the climax but I still don't really understand what the division, the grand serpent or the ravagers even want (as well as having 1000 other questions). How can you expect the audience to be invested in the outcome if we don't even know the goals of the main antagonists?
I think we are in store for another underwhelming Chibnall finale.
Showtrial (2021)
You get out what you put in
The murder mystery and trial keep the show mysterious and tense throughout.
All of the characters are complex, compelling, relatable and well acted. If you prefer simple and likeable characters this won't be for you but if put in the effort to try and see things from their perspective there is a lot to get out of this show.
It is somewhat ironic to me that lots of people are simply labelling Talitha as an entitled, spoiled brat, which is basically an admission you didn't really watch the show.
Doctor Who: Flux: Chapter Three - Once, Upon Time (2021)
Oh dear...
I think Chibnall wrote an incredible script for this episode, then mistakenly dropped it in a blender, panicked and glued it back together with paste.
I have never seen a less comprehensible episode of Doctor Who. I barely even understand the plot, they hid in their timestreams to escape and ended up in random moments in their past...?? Or something?? Who even knows at this point. The episode lacks any tonal consistency and one moment we have jokes, another sad piano music, EVIL MUSIC, back to sad pianos.
The special effects vary from outstanding to bargain basement. The actors seem like they are just doing it for the paycheck and who can blame them.
Doctor Who: Flux: Chapter Two - War of the Sontarans (2021)
Not Great
The visuals and costumes were nice and the story was lacking, as per usual. The Sontarans were dumb and the dialogue uninspired.
Unfortunately, the Sontarans felt more like an army of clowns in this episode. Their commander conveniently explains their plans and objectives to the Doctor. They shoot at and miss Dan constantly, one group of them are defeated by one dog man another by Dan's mum and dad. The entire Sontaran army decide to refuel their suits at the same time, without leaving a single guard and luckily for the Doctor there is a point on the outside of the ship where she can drain all their suit fuel. All in all they felt pretty underwhelming.
The episode also felt bogged down by Chibnall's characteristic overuse of dialogue to deliver information the the audience. I had never heard of Mary Seacole and it was nice to learn about her but Doctor's need to yammer on about how great she is made it all feel quite forced.
Overall, I was disappointed, I thought the previous episode showed some promise.
Doctor Who: Flux: Chapter One - The Halloween Apocalypse (2021)
Invasion of the Talking Dogs
Pleasantly surprised. It was... better? I think. I think Chibnall may have just thrown 500 plotlines at me to overwhelm my dopamine receptors but it was certainly interesting at least.
The sets and CGI were mostly excellent but it is hard to judge the story as it is part of a larger whole.
Dan didn't feel like he had a particularly clearly defined personality for his first appearance but I will wait and see.
