David (1984)
Not PC but.. honest, fair and you'll agree.
So I'm only 20 minutes into the film so understanding this review is specific to what I want to mention.
In fairness to overall film, I'm sure it's otherwise fine but leave that until later. I bet I saw this on TV when out almost 30 years ago so want to see if I remember!
But no disrespect to gay actors, this husband/abuser has no business trying to play a Dad back then
...he can't play a straight dude (there were no gay dads, maybe not legal in the 80s). 4 seconds into his first scene, I'm yelling "play a straight guy, you're obviously gay here too".
No indictment of gays, know that, just here in this film this actor reeks gay instead of playing his character.... Straight divorced dad.
I immediately googled name, asked general information & of course, first thing that comed up, he's openly out, married gay.
So in this film they hired the wrong actor; it should not scream he's gay yet his acting screams it.
Not a good actor.
Now to the movie, will report later but starting out with a hard strike.
The Unbelievable Plight of Mrs. Wright (2019)
Humility? Nope
"My mother was an obese smoker"...as she next shows pictures of a regular weight, to slim, woman.
Hmmm.
"I graduated passing the GED and ACT" (hilariously drinking all night before) when um... no Lady, one doesn't GRADUATE the ACT, it's a test!
Her depiction of her brutal mother
(which one should doubt is true) is merciless, paints herself as this perpetual victim.
Less than 15 minutes in to this brag fest, she saves someone with CPR after ordering another dude to move the obese man (she's obsessed with weight it seems) to the floor.
Oh know. Next. Lets see her diplomas!
Less than half hour in, I was choking on too much hubris and likely fiction.
The only unbelievable plight here is being audience to this whack-job.
Seriously, with so many amazing and worthwhile documentaries, do yourself a favor and look to them!
Elisa, vida mía (1977)
Seriously?
This is the most pretentious futile drivel I've quite possibly ever seen.
Given these deluted reviews, I didn't even jump ship but waited until it's exhausting end. Now I demand 2 hours of my life back that was stolen.
Only in France or Spain could this silly pointless tale find an audience. I'm fully convinced there's a herd mentality where person's erroneously feel they're smarter trying to suggest this holds merit.
I will mark this as spoiler but honestly it's impossible to spoil rotten material.
To sum up some pieces:
It's considered clever to have the opposite person do the narration of a character?
No it's not.
Oh and of course let's try to be original having you guess what's real, what's not?
Also no. Additionally who cares.
Also is it brave to throw in incest, be it imagined or not?
Nope not. Maybe show some old mother, son..to be fair for once. We see enough drooling geezers with young woman, but hey incest is artsy eh?
There's NO art here but maybe will replace your sedative to sleep.
Also some funny dialogue:
It's not you but my fault ( as wife explains wanting to leave when hubby sc#$&s her best friend).
Sure. Makes sense!!!
Then best part is ugly mate begging return while starting what bad person she is. She does the same. Sounds like a compelling reason to reunite ...you selfish, stupid ingrate!!!
What trash passes for art film when the real deal exists!
Unacceptable.
Nothing here to see whatever. No story and not one character you will care out.
Oh but there is a bed scene with a corpse that's plain stupid hilarious, maybe that will wake you up.
Can't say it alerted me. Wish I slept instead, that would be time for better served.
Africa (2019)
Save your time.
About as long interesting as watching paint dry.
No story at all.
Unless you find it fascinating some old man almost kills his dog, no plot exists.
Most confusing of all, why AFRICA but not one Black person anywhere? Not in the entire film.
Yes I understand there are White folks there but doubt they're so segregated they have run into no Black people! Appalling. Seems overtly racist but nevermind, there's nothing on this so-called film anyway.
I now learned you can absolutely film movie about nothing, where nothing happens and there's zero character development.
They keep requiring more words here yet nothing to say.
Wildflower (2020)
Wow, no reviews!
I gotta say I thought this movie hit the right spots even if it's unlike anything I usually see.
I mostly seek substantive work.
I do not watch Hallmark, lifetime channels and find manipulative melodrama offensive.
But for me, somehow this is elevated above that. Surprised me some! Sure they gloss over some very difficult ideas but I think they had to... it's not that kind of a movie (I should know, that's often my palette).
Specifically, I've read enough reviews critiquing the landmines they must navigate given the nature of subject matter and feel that's somewhat unfair as one can't win no matter how they depict the mentally challenged, no matter how serious it is or to what extent.
Let's be fair, I'm certain there are as many varied stories as there are people, so it's rational to depict whatever one you responsibly tackle.
It's far too PC to rip everything apart these days. Sure gets old!
I really thought the daughter was an exceptional actress and yes, I found the parents both believable.
Yes, heartbreaking...at times, frightening, frustrating, and in turn, simply loving. Certainly made me cry. That's not easy.
Most of all, the overall message-- yes there's more than one, but this vital one stands out --is to strive to live your best life; try to persevere.
True enough, we're all dealt the cards we're dealt, so play your hand the best you're able. Life can & will call on your ability to deal with obstacles.
Sooner... like here...or, later.
But hey maybe keep hot ,rich boyfriend around, he's a keeper!
I thought overall this isn't a story to pass on, not with the garbage out there audience's rush out to see!!
So go ahead, might surprise you too!
What We Do in the Shadows (2019)
"Robert" Seger, SuperbOwl & this show, rocks!
Can't recall how we first got glimpse into this wonderful comedy, probably an NPR piece but since first jump in, we've been hooked.
VERY clever script added to seriously talented actors & this recipe is gold.
I must add the "superbowl" (superb owl. HA!) party is one of my all-time favorites, thus far. Who thinks of these things? Such a bright writing staff!
Since mid '70's, a longtime Bob Seger fan, what a nice touch it was last week to have him added to a little slice of an episode. Good move, BOB, to grant them license to add your music. Not surprising, I would imagine Seger has much the same taste & talent he's exhibited since his 20's.
Still, not often you hear a reference to Bob (Robert!), a delightful added touch.
I don't see the quality waning & glad this little gem continues though many likely have no idea it even exists, given the wide-range, uncreative plethora that is cable, and even streaming, TV.
