Stealth (2005)
A designer propaganda for the American Youth
I have to say, this movie did look kind of cool when i saw a trailer. But as soon as i watched it whole i realized that it was something completely different. This movie has a hidden plan within it. It makes you look at the cool planes, look at the heroes flying them and makes you think - "oh how cool it is to be an American pilot for the air-force! You get to kill the bad guys and fly kick-ass planes! It's everything i ever wanted!".
But of course this by all means has nothing to do with reality. Hey, in "Stealth" even a deadly machine developed by the military turns out to be just a cool dude called "Eddy" that is so patriotic and brave that he will risk starting world war III just to save an American pilot lost somewhere in Korea.
This movie really has nothing to offer except for good special effects and perhaps the idea of a robotic plane (which has been riped straight from any of the "Terminator" movies). Apart from that - nonsensical dialogs and a lesson for the geographically impaired Americans just does not make a good movie.
Threshold (2005)
Mr Braga strikes out again
I have to say i was looking forward to Threshold. It seemed like a really good show. But then I started watching it and immediatelly i noticed a couple of things. First of all, the threshold scenario thing is a total rip-off of the "Sphere" movie. Second of all, the whole premise of the show seems to be taken straight from one of the later seasons of the X-Files. As i watched it further it became apparent to me that this show is painfully predictable. From character lines to events occurring, in episodes you can guess what will be said and what will happen. That is because most of the story-lines so far seem to be "borrowed" from other TV shows. Furhtermore - the show can be really boring. Character interaction seems to be dumbed down to just work and there is no personal aspect to anyone of them. Watching this show reminds me of watching people in a big company working on a certain project. It's just not fun when it's only business. And this show is all about the PLAN. However it gets sidetracked constantly with trivial scenarios. What kind of alien invasion is this?!? Infecting a couple of people on a boat in the middle of nowhere is just plain stupid. And the whole "korean sub in the area" was just a simple way to cut the visit on the ship short.
So, to sumarise. After sinking Enterprise and Star Trek with it, Mr Braga got himself a nice show called Threshold... Which basically manages to keep the style of storytelling familiar (and dreaded) to Enterprise viewers, well alive.
2001: A Space Travesty (2000)
A Space Tragedy
A yet another Leslie Nielsen movie. I've always enjoyed his movies since they had an ability to make one laugh... hard. But, lately something has started to go wrong. His last movies were not funny at all. It may be because of Nielsen's age or because of directors presumption that having Leslie in his movie will guarantee a success. Although he tries to make the movie work it fails completely. Moments where you will catch yourself smiling (not laughing) can be counted with one hand and the whole plot fails in the middle of the movie where it is being turned into a boring and long theater scene. The whole idea about having Nielsen play a Magoo like character has failed miserably because it's not funny anymore - this time dear old Leslie doesn't have to play, he simply is old!
Also the FX in this movie don't seem to work well. Although you might think they don't have to for a comedy. But in the case of this movie it's different. The authors tried to use CG but 90% of the time it simply looks fake and stupid, not funny.
So, for me the movie is a complete failure. They would have done better hiring some good script writers instead of trying to use the same old tricks with the same OLD guy.
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001)
Excelent and not so excelent.
This is a movie that i've been expecting for a long time. I personally did not like the computer game with the same title. My reason for it is because i hate Manga and everything connected to it. However, when i saw pictures from the movie i was absolutely amazed. The CG animation in this movie is absolutely amazing! People who made it must have spent millions of dolars on it. The 3d models that can be seen on the screen are lifelike and the environment is also superb. I admit that there were times in the movie where you wouldn't be able to tell if it's CG or real. However, it's not perfect. Although the animation and sounds are excelent the story line is not so excelent. The main character - dr. Oki - does not look like a Manga character but she sure acts like one. Also, when you look closer you can see that there's something wrong with the story line. What i mean is that on one side it's "spiritual" and on the other it's scientific. Why the spiritual part is OK, the other one is sometimes a pack of nonsense. I don't want to write any spoilers but when you hear it, you'll know it. So, it's great but not absolutely great. If you are a sci-fi and CG fanatic the you have to see it, if not... well, you may but you might not like it.
