Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
What a blockbuster should be
We had so much fun and really enjoyed this ride. The ending mission was truly exhilarating and kept us on edge of seat. The sound design, action set pieces were all great. Film was surprisingly really emotional as well. I didn't think it would affect me as much as it did. This is coming from someone who couldn't even finish the first movie amd didn't really care for it so it's enjoyable for new generation as well.truly a memorable cinema experience. We saw it in imax which did enhance the experience a bit.
Sanma no aji (1962)
Really disappointed
This seems like a repeat of what he has already done in his previous works. I've seen quite a few ozu films and by now it's getting old with the same concept where father marries away daughter and poor guy will now be alone. He doesn't go any deeper or give solutions but rather says it's not worth having children or sons are better. There were not many father daughter scenes to feel sad towards end. Also why is he sad because now he has to do his own chores? He still has two sons and a daughter in law so how is he alone? Can't he meet his daughter after marriage since they probabaly live close by? In film He stayed out all day working and eating and drinking with friends and didn't care about his daughter or her needs or if she's bored or alone and even now he only thinks of himself and how he will be alone for few minutes at night when he comes home or have to make his own tea or food. We call that self centered or selfish these days.
The Night House (2020)
Great film and acting
Rebeca hall put on quite a show. She was great and really went all the way. The camera work, story and twists all were great and kept you guessing till the end. 2 hours well spent.
I Care a Lot (2020)
Horrible story and characters
The story is so bizarre and absurd how with court order you can force some one to old home and control their life. And what a group where everyone is in on scam from the doctor, to judge, to our main lead to even the facility. Issue is main character is a vile person where u want her to lose within minutes of meeting her so how do we care for her. Some dialogue and scenes were totally cringe and out of place and character. The film title is really cringe and bad. Peter dinklage acting was one noted and horrendous. The Russian mafia couldn't kill the two girl but they easily traced this mastermind criminal whose supposedly been underground with ease. In end they team together to create this illegal empire that I guess goes under police radar and for some little redemption someone shoots the lead because his mother died without seeing her son. Our main character is I guess so dumb that they could never see this coming even though the mafia was after them not long before.
The Mitchells vs the Machines (2021)
So fun and touching
At first I thought it would be a typical family fun film but that was instantly shattered with the intro, animation style, music and humor. You could tell right away this has a uniqueness to it when it comes to the story telling style Sort of like Edgar wright. The story for the father daughter was very touchy and moving especially since I'm a father of a young baby girl. The movie was very funny and we laughed at many parts and it also went by very fast. In end when it said it was based on true story then I got it because the movie had a unique vision, humor and heart which is missing from many films. Great job to whole team on this achievement and Netflix for putting this out.
CODA (2021)
I really enjoyed it
This was a very moving, fun and at times sad movie that really made you care about the characters, their work and their life. The music was great and there were about 5-6 scenes that were very powerful and moving. I thought it did have the right balance where it didn't get too serious or slow but at same time didn't get too sappy or melodramatic. The main girl did a great job showing so many emotions and was a very powerful performance. One of the best movies I've seen in recent times that is a crowd pleaser.
Doraibu mai kâ (2021)
Had higher hopes
It started good and ended good but lost me in middle. It took me about 6 tries to finish it because it was so slow and I actually watch art house or black and white films so I imagine modern regular movie goer will have issues. The movie didn't have much music or cuts and sometimes people would go on long monologues which is all fine but here actions or intentions were too subtle and not many emotions part of which I'm sure is cultural difference.
The driver was almost like a robot displaying zero emotions until the end. Movie so subtle that I still don't think I fully know what it's about or what it's saying. How to live after losing someone or how to recover using art or how to accept people? When guy mentioned how wife started writing again after sex and their process how she would tell him after sex and he'll remember and tell her next day, it almost lost me and made me roll my eyes to the back of my head. Then the driver also lost her mother who was a psycho and now they're both on their journey to recover and learn to live with this.
Overall I can appreciate it because it's not dumbed down modern reboot film but if u want audience to spend 3 hours with ur characters in their world there should be some fun or entertainment so it doesn't feel like a chore which this film felt like to me.the last 20 minutes we're moving and ended on a high more.
The Batman (2022)
Don't understand the hype
I generally don't view superhero films but I thought this would be similar to joker so figured give it a try. Big mistake me and my wife were bored out of our mind. 3 hours was too long of run time. I tried to think of some positives but nothing comes to mind. Movie was too dark and hard to see, couldn't see or really understand riddler and when he took mask off he was like some awkward teen nerd, in end we didn't get any big fights except Batman fighting riddler knock offs, people keep shooting at Batman body not learning hes bullet proof, he and alfred survive bomb blast when right next to it, alfred was horrible and almost like his big brother instead of father figure, penguin was like doing a bad Robert deniro Italian American accent, the riddles were annoying and solving them was very cliche and uninteresting, all the Gotham land marks were like nyc rip off nothing original the main building in end was called Gotham square garden lol can come up with something more original.
Kokuriko-zaka kara (2011)
May be my least favorite ghibli yet
Animation was amazing and music was great although a little melodramatic at times. Story, characters and the world were just ok - nothing too bad nothing too amazing. Now main issue is with the story and about how boy and girl fall in love but the twist that they may actually be brothers. In the end turns out they're not brother since boy belonged to the friend but the girls dad did adopt him so maybe they're step siblings?? I don't understand this story decision at all and very weird angle for a children's movie. In end when they're going to the third friend to find out the truth it feels it's not to find out about the father and the relation there but rather to see if boy and girl can be boyfriend girlfriend or just siblings which is very tacky and anti climatic.
The Weekend Away (2022)
Wasn't expecting much but good
Lots of twists to keep u guessing and interesting and main lead did great acting to show so many different emotions. Ending was just ok and some things didn't really make sense but overall it was a fun ride.
Mogul Mowgli (2020)
This was good and unique
First it was great to see our culture represented. Film seems very personal to riz due to his background. Some scenes and montages were very powerful and moving. I especially like the surreal and dream sequences. The actors, director, story, music, cinematography all were great and film really had a unique feeling to it and unlike other films which is very difficult to pull off. Another great entry in rizs career and I'm loving all the recent choices he's been making.
The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun (2021)
A bit wordy and starts meh but overall great
I guess you can expect so many words because it s a film about journalism. Pros - cinematography, set design, acting, Anderson humor, music all were great per wes's usual. I feel christoph waltz and sairose Ronan were a little wasted, I didn't really care for the first story about the crazed painter, also sometimes there were too many words and things going on in screen to focus and had to really focus to get everything and especially since also subtitles for French. Second and third parts were great and humorous and usual anderson. Little complex story so Maybe will enjoy more on second and third viewing.
Antlers (2021)
What a disappointment
Pity because I like the director and jesse plemons and love this genre. The acting was ok by adults but the kids acting was bad. The cinematography was good but that's about it. The story was very bland and not scary. There were few jumpscares from audio mostly which got annoying after a few times. Not worth it.
This Is Where I Leave You (2014)
Made us laugh and feel at same time
This was a fun and moving movie. The characters and acting was very real and made you both laugh out loud amd feel deep emotions at the same time. All actors did great and the story was also good.
È stata la mano di Dio (2021)
Gave up after 45 minutes
Very unusual family and they were all very ugly on the inside and outside. They were mocking all sorts of people and just displaying very ugly behavior. Mom and dad were very unlikable and story was not going anywhere. Whole family got to see the Aunty naked few times which is very odd and didn't make any sense.
Kimi (2022)
Last 30 minutes ruined it
Movie fell apart when she went outside. What was up with her weird walk and weird camera shooting style when she went out they wanted to seem frightened or intense but it was just funny. Bad guys went after her and there was some weird Russian Hitman guy in a living room with his mom. Then for some reason bad guys take her back to her apartment and her neighbor comes who she's never met and interrupts and gets stabbed and they all go back to her apartment and then movie becomes comedy like home alone where she uses smart device to turn off lights and turn on music and run away to attic and kill all bad guys and have a happy ending where she goes to breakfast with her sleeping buddy. Very bizarre and average film in the third act and totally Falls apart. Also rita Wilson was in it for few minutes and totally forgettable because in mid meeting she leave to call hitman who come to their office to kidnap or kill her haha wow very bad writing and totally unrealistic.
Mare of Easttown (2021)
What a ride
They did an amazing job with this. The town, the setting, the characters all seemed so realistic in their portrayal and so lived in. Kate winslet was amazing in this role and it was great to see her journey and transformation. The last two episodes had a lot of twists and turns but all lead to a very believable and satisfying ending. One of the best shows in recent history.
Gehraiyaan (2022)
Meh
I like this director so was looking forward to this. A lot of things were good but few weren't such as
- alisha didn't get arrested in end. Not sure how cops can fumble that
- too much cursing. People cursing in meeting, before proposing, in front of parents. Seemed out of place
- the end reveal with them being step sisters didn't have impact and was sort of confusing.
- a little loud and over dramatic at times. No subtlety. Everyone says everything direct.
- in the second half alisha just glued to the guy and wouldn't leave him alone calling and stalking him and seemed totally out of character. One minute she's independent and runs her house and her own business amd breaks her engagement. Next she's met this new person and just keeps harassing him because she's lonely.
Ghahreman (2021)
One of the best directors working today
This is what cinema can and should do. Such a powerful and complex film told via one unique circumstance. The acting, story, cinematography and of course direction were all perfect. There were no good or evil characters and everyone had their own position and perspective. The ending shot was perfect with prison guard on one side and the newly released convict on other with our main characters in middle. I hope it gets nominated and maybe even wins an Oscar.
King Richard (2021)
Great film
Especially loved Wills acting which can be a hit or miss sometimes. But this time he came prepared and serious and it showed. All actors did a good job and film did a good job portraying his good and bad.2.5 hours went by really fast so the pacing was good and also the music and cinematography.
42 (2013)
Great film
Great acting by chadwick and harrison ford whose accent took me a little bit to get used to it. The film had real heart and showed the things Jackie had to go through during that time in america. Also in end it is a feel good movie but without all the cheesiness or without being overly dramatic which was great.
Dune (2021)
Really enjoyed this
Pros:
- music and sound design. Hans Zimmer did amazing work
- costumes and set design were great
- cinematography
- the vladimir villain was good and unique
- cinematography and story were also good.
Con:
- didn't care or understand the story too much
- zendaya was almost missing yet she was treated as main co lead.
- world so advanced yet they're fighting old school sword style. Why don't they have guns or lasers to fight each other.
- didn't like the whole spice thing and how that's valuable and people fighting over it and used for space travel. Could've come up with something better.
Old (2021)
Just horrible
Good idea executed poorly. The dialogue was horrible and made these talented actors seem like hacks. The story was very bad especially with the whole pregnant thing. The ending reveal was also horrible.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Don't get the hype
It had good moments till vip episode but overall games sucked and too childish and then the ending and last few episodes sucked..........................
The Many Saints of Newark (2021)
Horrible
Had to turn off after one hour. Obviously talented actors let down by writing and direction. Some actors almost came off as caricatures or wooden and some were very awkward. Sopranos is one of the greatest shows and I will forget this ever happend and get my fix from there .
