The Mist (2017)
based on Stephen King so it degenerates really fast and brutally
Stephen King likes to kill off his heroes and show up villians as the only remaining guys around and this does with a flourish. No one will probably read this review because there are 492 other ones here but thought I'd put in my 2 cents. It's a train wreck happening ... every one is evil or crazy ... victims are killed fast and you are left with no one you care about ... in Breakin Bad you had some empathy for the character and wanted to see how low he would go ... here you just don't care after all. I read a lot of bad reviews but had to see for my myself. Every possible good person turns out bad ... SK likes to show that our dark sides always win out under stress that we resort to cruelty and immorality ... think Lord of the Flies at the mall ... literally ... no one has any redeeming features. everyone has a dark secret and everyone is sinister. Anyone can abandon their humanity instantly to save their own skins. No one left to stop them, so why bother? I am now not at all surprised that the cable network did not order a second season. Way too brutal and unfeeling. Plus it made no sense - but I did not read SK's book - maybe I should. I know the ending of the movie - this cable series has no saviors, only demons in various forms. We're supposedly left with cliff-hangers but you end up not even caring for anyone. Not worth watching but fans will anyways. Some like this this stuff. I was disappointed and I wanted it to show me something worth getting involved in. I was wrong. Watch it if you want to ... you'll be disappointed at the end of the season as I was. If not, I can recommend a good pastor and a therapist for you.
Baggage (2008)
very rushed, very confusing ... did I miss something?
Hallmark makes some very good holiday movies, most with a strong moral and/or religious undertones ... but this one had me very confused. Granted I came into it about mid-way through, but I see an old guy fooling around with a younger girl ... she shows up in what could be a compromising clutch between him and his "still" wife in his motel room ... basic G-rated Hallmark fashion, the door is open and everything is above board ... she is confused but understanding and allows it. As someone else said "yeah, right, no." We're supposed to feel sorry for this guy who is getting a divorce so he can go live in the Bahamas with a girl half his age ... he doles out advice to the people around and supposedly blind that he is not taking it himself. Pacing is confusing and the script rushes toward a typical Hallmark ending, dumping plot points along the way to be discarded. The girlfriend is there, then bows out gracefully, or is sucked up by aliens, you never really know. A church service is thrown in at the end, which really makes no sense ... the daughter just had a traumatic birth delivery and she is all grins and smiles days later at a church service? Highly doubtful. I love Hallmark, but this one was a mess and made no sense. Actors were great but the writing was terrible. We watched it because it was part of the stream of holiday movies on the cable channel, but I would not look it up again in the future.
Confessions from a Holiday Camp (1977)
contains Caroline Ellis of the BUGALOOS
sorry, haven't seen it but I doubt I will just because of the content and the prior reviews. But just tracking down a comment on youtube ... Caroline Ellis was "Joy" on the Bugaloos kids TV show, very popular in US early morning Saturday shows in the 70's... she was cute then ... guess she was tired of looking like she was only going to act in parts for the kiddie shows ... supposedly she has full nudity in this film, front and back, according to another. Kind of like Jessica Biel when she did that stupid photo shoot to get out of her contract on Seventh Heaven - but she got a good publicist that was able to keep it from ruining her career ... But that is probably STILL not worth a reason to rent this movie. Sorry about that. LOL.
Open Water (2003)
Very disappointing movie - rent it maybe, don't buy it
Here was a film that hyped enough to get initial sales but no word of mouth follow-up ... I thought I would love this movie and I was VERY disappointed. The movie is clever and fairly well made for the independent genre, but the ending SUCKED!
spoiler alert:
If you're a Stephen King-type fan that likes to see all the stars die in a movie, you'll like this film. But the stupid idiots GIVE UP ... gee, good film about the ability of people to FAIL under extreme pressure.
If I wanted to see that on my TV screen, I'd forget the movie and just watch the local and national news. It is what I'd show my kids NOT to do in life.
One nude scene that little to nothing to do with anything, other than a draw for the teenage male ... it's about "coitus interruptus" and the plot makes you feel the same way ...
The only people who like this film may use it as a style of learning how to shoot digital movies ... as far as substance goes, waste of time.
