CSI: Vegas: The Reaper (2024)
Oooh, this was a spicy one.
Folsom knew he was in trouble just for digging so deep into his Mom's murder case. But can you blame him? Trey was the perfect accomplice. The underbelly of society is his scene. Seeing him mess with the guy's car and crash it into the drug factory/yogurt shoppe was so cool. I hope we get to see more of Trey in this series. Josh and Trey wanted justice for Jeanette and they got it. But I'm glad neither of them were reduced to murder.
Based on the cause of death.."When the capsaicin coursed through the body, it shrank nerve endings, shriveled arteries and killed neurons. Blood flow to the brain was restricted. It caused a fatal hemorrhagic stroke". It kind of makes you second guess trying anything spicy at the local pub during 'volcano themed' chicken wing night.
Y: The Last Man (2021)
Great concept but poorly executed.
When this show was announced, I checked out the graphic novel to see what it was all about. The mystery of why all the male creatures on earth suddenly dropping dead was an intriguing way to start a modern apocalypse. Having the son of the newly appointed President of the United States being the only male survivor was another interesting wrinkle in the story.
The first episode set a terrific plot into motion. But then later episodes dragged on too slowly in their side stories to keep me interested.
The sudden breakdown of EVERYTHING seemed suspicious to me. Cars aren't male, neither are mobile phones, or power plants. ?? Certainly there are female engineers, technicians, scientists etc that could keep things running. The show kind of forgot this idea and just got bogged down in the politics of power struggles, blame and anger over the government not doing more to help everyone. Yorick as the last man is more concerned in finding his missing girlfriend than figuring out why he's still around.
The comic was more entertaining, and I think the show would have been more effective as an adult cartoon than live action.
Star Trek: Picard: No Win Scenario (2023)
Wow, just wow...
They managed to compress all the drama, complexities, action and emotion of a 2 hour movie into a single 1 hour episode. Absolutely amazing from beginning to end. This was Star Trek at its finest.
Somehow in a seemingly hopeless situation they managed to come together to find a way out. Because that's what the crew of the Enterprise is known for. But this time it's not the Enterprise, it's the Titan. Despite their differences and past grievances toward eachother, they found a way to dig deep and trust one another to do what they do best.
We learned more about why Captain Shaw is such an asshole. He's managed to turn it into his charm. He's not just a Captain, he's an engineer who knows his ship.
We learned why Jack had decided to keep his absentee father out of his life, and it's heartbreaking when you realize why. There's more to Jack than just being the son of a hero Captain.
Admiral/Captain Picard was a hero to many during his career, but being a hero puts a target on your back. And whether they like it or not there are times when the hero falls from Grace, regardless of if it's their own fault or not. The curse of the events that occurred at WOLF 359, will haunt Picard forever and for many it made him the worst enemy of all.
Sisko was a product of that event, and now we learn that Shaw was too. There's no doubt now, why both of them were so reluctant to meet Jean-Luc Picard, the "hero" Captain/Admiral of Starfleet when he was asking for favours.
Seven was as brilliant and resourceful as ever, and despite her borg-ness, Shaw finally realized that her rank of Commander is well earned. It was nice to see them work together as a Captain and his First-Officer should. Especially where they're both comfortable working in Command and in Engineering matters.
An all around fantastic episode, and here's hoping that this wasn't the "jump the shark" moment that means the rest of the final season is dull.
Star Trek: Picard: Disengage (2023)
Edge of your seat "family" fun...
You don't know Jack, but then again it won't take long for you to figure out who he is. Riker figured it out right away, and Picard refused to even acknowledge what he realized as well. Beverly has been hiding from everyone she knows for the past 25 years, because she had someone equallly important to hide. Jean-Luc Picard always put his career ahead of laying down any kind of family roots, believing he didn't need any. His family became the crew that he served with along the way. Now many years later the ghost that is Beverly Crusher needs his help because his secret son, Jack, is in danger. Jack and Beverly have been serving the forgotten fringe of Federation space by offering medical aid by any means necessary. Thievery has made Jack a wanted man, but his crimes have ignited a much deeper threat that will require Picard to ask his whole "family" for help.
The Lion King (2019)
Visually stunning, but....
Has all the realism of a nature documentary and lovely rendered animal characters and scenery, but talking animals should be left to cartoons. The talent of the voice cast is lost in the limitations of realistic animal faces. The near carbon copy dialogue of the original cartoon falls flat leaving me to miss the charisma of the original voice actors from the cartoon. If I didn't already know the original so well maybe I could be fooled, but this version would only appeal to the generation raised on the horrible talking dog AirBud/Air Buddies franchise. Kudos to the filmmakers for the gorgeous display, and for the actors' singing talents. Thank goodness the songs are familiar.
