Just watch it...
8 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It doesn't matter whether or not you are a fan of Kilmer, this is a truly captivating, sad, humorous, introspective, and hopeful story. And one that I am glad he decided to tell and one that I think will touch each of us...

Just go watch it...

Possibly fun for some but...

...nowhere near a truly scientific team nor investigation. After watching 5 episodes, the number of science-related errors is immense and I am highly skeptical of Travis Taylor's level of knowledge and expertise. He may be well credentialed but many of the statements he made and reasoning he puts forth are purely subjective and not based in reason nor rigorous argument. The most glaring for me was in episode 5 when he suggested that the site was possibly a huge parabolic dish and part of a wormhole - the letter being objects not yet even known to exist. But yeah, lo-and-behold there's been one right here on planet Earth the whole time...

Horrible - unrealisitc

It is understandable that sci-fi content creators must, from time-to-time, embellish or even make something up. However, all good sci-fi does at least get the things we know correctly --- this show doesn't even strive for that essential quality.

Disingenous cherry picking of "science" and events
20 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Watched the first 3 episodes and the bottom line, as with most of these shows, they massively spin ominous sounding events and artifacts so as to create the appearance that UFO activity is upon us. Watch only if you like some comedic relief re: UFO hunting and discoveries.

Warning: Spoilers
I hate to say it but Gibney seriously missed the mark here. I think his recent trips through Land O Lance and Scientology have gone to his head big time. It seems pretty clear that Gibney, who's become known for the revelatory nature of his films, sought to do a "here's the real deal behind the guy you thought you knew" piece - and he failed miserably. First of all, his mission is doomed from the outset due to one very simple reason - it's simply impossible to deconstruct anyone's character inside of a 2-hour documentary. With the Armstrong piece, the scope was limited strictly to the fraud that is integral to Armstrong and even then, only to how that fraud infected Armstrong's cycling career. But here, Gibney decided to go for the whole enchilada. Second, there's nothing at all new or revealing in this piece. Everything Gibney brings up is all well-known by virtue of two very recent Jobs bios as well as the public domain. Rounding out the trifecta, Gibney tried to get in a few shots through the proverbial heart by interviewing some apparently key individuals to help in his deconstruction debacle - but alas this was also a nogo...none of the folks he interviewed really have any creditability on the subjects they were being called on to discuss and even if they did, again, nothing revelatory at all.

It's clear within the first few minutes that what Gibney is really trying to do, via deconstruction, is to understand why so many loved Jobs. The problem here is that the question is not that hard to understand nor answer. The connection we feel is disguised as being to Jobs when in reality it's to what he has given us. It's the exact same as with anything we become emotionally attached to - music, a movie, etc. Sometimes those things evoke a strong emotional reaction and that single thing is the seed from which the resulting attachment grows. Apple products have been, and continue to be, engineered (as Jobs himself said) at the intersection of art and technology. They are meant to change how we express ourselves and interact with technology. And through that interaction, they are meant to truly enhance (hopefully by orders of magnitude) how we experience life and the people around us. And while Jobs didn't directly design nor build every amazing product himself, he was definitely the backbone and driving force behind the ideas and culture from which all on the team derived direction and motivation. Christ man, how could we not have an emotional attachment to Jobs and the products his teams brought to us??? Frankly, people either get it or they don't - And if they don't then fine but don't spin too many cycles on it because as Billy from The Departed says "It ain't supernatural".

Unfortunately, Gibney did spin the cycles. After telling us he's made literally zero progress toward answering "Why do we love Jobs?", he closes with what appears to be a soliloquy\wax poetic of the contradictions that are Jobs - as if Gibney had a clue. People that were far closer to Jobs and who knew him a lot longer and went through a lot more with him oddly arrive at far different conclusions - who you gonna trust??? Yeah - this is the part where you walk out, go to the ticket booth, and demand your money back.

Net-net - to those yet to see this film, I strongly urge you to save your $$$ and wait for this thing to hit any number of free streaming outlets. To those who did pony up the cash - me included - BUMMER.

You ever decide to meet up...
25 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
...with some "friends" you haven't seen in a long while - typically those you used to hang with like in your college years and mid-20s - and you come home remembering why you lost touch and that you're glad it's all behind you??? This movie is kinda like that...

Don't get me wrong - I TOTALLY LOVE THE GUYS...BUT...this movie just tried way too hard. Seriously, for the first 30 minutes, it really felt like 4 single guys who hit mid-life went down to Vegas to keep the dream alive. Every single thing we loved about the series became a used and worn cliché in this movie. Almost every big name who had a cameo in the series also had a cameo in this. Markie Mark, Pharrell, TI, etc...list just goes on and on...BUT I will say seeing Jessica Alba drop the F-BOMB like 4 times in a row was a nice treat. But that aside, this was in a word...

EHHH

I definitely expected a whole lot more rather than more of the same. Maybe what I hoped for was simply impossible to deliver. That the 4...scratch that...5...would have grown (i.e. evolved) a bit yet still be kicking butt in the movie game. Instead I got 5 guys who did the same crap but with more years behind them...said another way, no evolution and therefore, no excuse for their antics. Case in point - Sal...errrrr, I mean Turtle...blazin' down Rodeo in the Escalade running down Ronda Rousey just so he can what??? Get a date??? He said he knew her from a while back - so then DUDE, give her a call but don't go all Fast n' Furious only to get nearly clubbed like a frickin' harp seal...

Yet, I still gave this 7 stars...why??? Like I said because I just love the guys...or maybe it's the dream they represent that I love. Bein' in Hollywood with all the pretty people - hell maybe even bein' one of the pretty people - and makin' movies. What kid wouldn't love that??? Problem is, Vinnie and crew just aren't kids anymore...

Worth a watch but set expectations accordingly...

Survivor's Remorse (2014–2017)

Has potential albeit with minor racist undertones
3 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Most of the writing is good but there is a feeling it is over-reaching - trying REALLY hard to show that blacks have made it, in some scenes, at the expense of white folk. Character comments such as "...the Titanic was a boat for rich white people - F'em all - they can all freeze to death for all I care" are hard to tell if part of the character's world view (and therefore serves the story) or if more the writing team trying to make a point (doesn't serve the story at all). It seems hard to believe the former when the very same character talks about moving on from the issues surrounding the American Civil War.

I think if the writers focus squarely on "the life" as it exists for young men in the NBA and the surrounding entourage of folks, then it should do well. In fact, HBO's Ballers is doing something similar with life in the NFL - and note the lack of any race related ideology there and just how nice it is. But as with pretty much any buddy-centric day-in-the-life type show, as soon as they start trying to make it more of a social statement vehicle, things go downhill rapidly.

We shall see after a couple of seasons.

The 7 rating is erroneously LOW
1 February 2015
This movie is without exception a solid 10 - higher if they allowed it. Folks may not appreciate the story nor the subject matter, but the acting is beyond quality. Farrell was OUTSTANDING and in essence, gives us all a practical class in acting. This film introduced me to several fine actors and it was self-evident that standouts Farrell, Whigham, & Shanon are complete naturals in their chosen craft. Actually it's kind of a shame that Farrell has had the better career because Wingham and Shannon are just as a good - IMHO.

All that said, the story is actually pretty darn good and the art and film direction is just a solid. How folks gives this thing a 7 is just unexplainable...

Anyway, I had to post this so folks realize they shouldn't gloss over this title because of the erroneously low rating...give this flick a try and I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

It has potential...
18 January 2015
The topic is interesting...and for those who are not into hip-hop, then some of the show's content may offend. The acting is tops as would be expected from folks like Mr. Howard and Ms. Henson. But the real breakout star, IMHO, is Mr. Smollett. Don't wanna give anything away but suffice to say his portrayal and talent both shine through - go watch the show for more specifics.

The issue I have with the show is the pace and lack of character development. I think the topic, content, and context are likely all there but the first two episodes moved along briskly which can be OK depending on what the mission is...but I don't think it serves this production well at all. In fact, if not for the phenomenal acting, I think the show would likely be a bomb for the two main reasons just previously mentioned.

If the show-runner can get the team to build up the characters a bit more, maybe thicken the plot in some areas, and give the audience some time to take it all in...a la Breaking Bad and Dexter (albeit drastically different topics)...then we might have something here.

We shall see...here's hoping...

Too many reviews by people...
25 May 2014
...who have no idea WTF they're talking about. If you haven't served as a SEAL, then you have zero business even commenting about any special forces aspect of this film nor any knowledge about what is and is not accurate, proper, or relevant in that arena. Further, if you haven't served in the military and in any armed conflict, then you have zero business commenting about the military and war aspects of this film.

As for the quality of the movie from a cinema, acting, and story - fire way - but otherwise, contain your comments to what you know.

That said, I served in the Navy - I love the Navy and the SEALs but I hate war and much of what we've done, as a Country, for the last decade or so WRT the military, our troops, and other citizens of this planet. Those feelings have kept me from embracing tales and movies that I suspect may glamorize the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and with this one, I felt especially that it might go down that path. However, I took the plunge and was not disappointed. This story does nothing to glamorize anything about war but does center squarely on the brotherhood and what hell can and will become your reality when Murphy (the law - not the SEAL) rears his ugly head. It is also about survival, dedication, and most of all - honor - both with the SEALs and the Afghanis. All in all, this movie is well done - has good acting and story-telling - and is an incredible story even if part of it is not 100% accurate.

If you're looking for real-world SEAL depiction, then this may or may not be it - real SEALs know far better than I. But if you're looking for a killer story told very well, then you've hit pay dirt...

Story is great but the production is sprinkled with gaffs
29 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
As I mentioned, I love the story as well as the characters but the writers need to take better care with the details. One thing I really admire about the Mad Men team over at AMC is that the show-runner, Matthew Wiener, is seriously obsessive about making sure all the details are correct. They even go as far as making sure something seemingly minor like the mention of a restaurant is consistent with the time being represented by that particular place in the story arc. As an example of just this type of gaff - season 1 episode 8 - the scene where Klien (DA) is talking with Ike in jail. Ike confronts Klein as to coerced testimony, fabricated evidence, etc. to which Klein responds "I've sent men to the gas chamber for less". Well the issue is this - up until 1998, electrocution was the only method used in FL when the voters approved the use of lethal injections. And besides, FL has never used the gas chamber because for many decades, the enlightened people of FL simply loved "Old Sparky" - their affectionate nickname for the electric chair. There are a few others here and there and while none of these is egregious or damaging to the storyline, these little details do add a nice fine polish to the production as whole. I rate the show a 9 but if they were to fix these peccadilloes, I place this at a 10 no problem.
