Doctor Who: The Angels Take Manhattan (2012)
Decent episode, just loads of plot holes
With time travel it's highly likely you're going to have plot holes (time travel is confusing), but there were so many things that didn't quite add up with this one (or in some cases, add up at all). Also, a lot of the plot just felt convenient for this being Amy and Rory's last episode, and was a bit rushed and underdeveloped.
Doctor Who: Flux: Chapter Three - Once, Upon Time (2021)
Too overly confusing, but it does get slightly better again
[3.5]
Once again I didn't enjoy this episode that much. There's still a lot of unnecessary sections, poor acting and writing. As much as I enjoy Doctor Who episodes where the characters are jumping about in time, this one felt like it had been done multiple times before, but this was not executed as well, like a deliberately confusing timey-wimey Stephen Moffat episode but worse. It was too overly confusing for my liking, though I think my main problem is that this series just doesn't feel like Doctor Who. (Most of Chibnall's episodes don't, but this series especially).
However, like some Chibnall episodes, there were bits that I really liked about it. The scene with the Cybermen was good, and my favourite part was probably when a Weeping Angel jumps out of Yaz's video game. Next week's trailer looks brilliant but because of the fact that these three episodes have been quite frankly awful, I'm not going to let myself get my hopes up.
Doctor Who: Flux: Chapter Two - War of the Sontarans (2021)
Better than episode one...but still not good
I'm going to start this review by saying that Jodie deserves so much better. There have been a few decent episodes over the last three years, but that doesn't begin to make up for all of the rubbish ones. This episode is a little better than the first one, but it's still packed with poor writing and predictable plot. I can barely tell you anything about Yaz and Thirteen even after three years because Chibnall can't write characters or just Doctor Who in general to save his life. RTD's return can't come too soon.
Doctor Who: Flux: Chapter One - The Halloween Apocalypse (2021)
A poorly plotted disappointment!
I have to admit I was excited but apprehensive for this episode. As it's Chibnall's last series I was hoping that maybe he would have learned from his earlier mistakes. Alas not.
I thought it would be better now that Graham and Ryan have gone as neither of them could act and they were also very one dimensional as characters. But to my disappointment the acting in this episode was still poor and I could barely understand anything the characters were saying thanks to the poor sound editing. Yaz was the only one of 13's companions that I actually liked, yet I just found her irritating in this episode. A lot of the CGI is also poor and makes the episode look really low budget even though it isn't. And to top that off, the pacing was awful, and some plot points that should have been developed a bit more weren't, whereas others were set up even when they didn't need to be.
I did like the way the Flux itself was created though, and the part with the weeping angel was interesting, although I don't think it necessarily needed to happen in this episode. It's just about watchable I suppose.
