Star Trek: The Next Generation: Hollow Pursuits (1990)
Great episode - writing reflects what we'd all like to do...
Schultz is a great actor in this episode. He's in a few other episodes as well as one of the movies.
I remember talking to someone when I was in college about this episode and they did a Mr. T. impression "I'm not getting into that transporter foo!" That would have been awesome to see..
But, as a 20 something when this came out, you know darn well that I and any guy watching the show would have thought about doing this very same thing. Enjoying fantasies, perhaps with people they know, maybe in a.... slightly non-g-rated fashion. There's a later episode where it implies Riker does this (the one with the metamorph).
So, I can't condemn his actions, just enjoy the episode.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: A Matter of Perspective (1990)
Unsatisfying...
Riker is brought up on charges and the testimonies are sometimes so opposite that someone is obviously lying or stretching the truth to breaking point.
Why I say this is unsatisfying is that's never pointed out in the end. Shouldn't the liars be beaten with 50 lashes? If their lie would have resulted in a death, should they be put to death too?
The whole guilty until proven innocent is the way it works in the US currently, even though that's not supposed to be the case.
I just think his assistant and widow should have some sort of brutal punishment for their lies. That part needed a bit more screen time.
Friends: The One with Chandler in a Box (1997)
Joey's a hypocrite
He's sleeping with two different women, Chandler erroneously calls Kathy his "girl friend" - WTF? He's on a date with someone else and, let's me honest, he's probably sleeping with both. And he gets bent out of shape because Chandler kisses ONE of the TWO he's sleeping with???? Give me a frickin' break. Such hypocrasy it's not even funny. The other stuff in the episode helps, but what Chandler goes through is just ridiculous.
The whole idea of Monica going out with Richard's son is funny. It's just plain weird that she'd go out with his son, and say he kisses like his dad, and Richard's son says she reminds him of his mom. How could that get wierder?
Friends: The One with the Ultimate Fighting Champion (1997)
Annoying rachel... again...
It's not enough that she's the reason the relationship ended because her behavior made Ross feel insecure - which looking at what happened, is VERY understandable: She hugs the dumba$$ before she hugs Ross - RIGHT THERE shows she screwed up. She's already spending very little time with him. In his shoes I'd just stopped talking to her or trying and see how long it takes before she notices. Now in this episode, she's sabatoging him by knowingly encouraging Phoebe to set him up with someone she THINKS he won't care for, only to find out she's wrong, and has the absolute gall to get upset that her plan didn't work. In a later episode she further sabotages him by encouraging her to shave her head.
Rachel is nothing more than a selfish, self centered, small minded b**ch.
MythBusters: Curving Bullets (2009)
Strang episode, but with some good parts
Firstly, the part about breaking the sound barrier and breaking glass saves this episode. It was great to see a plan traveling at Mach 1+. The high speed video, as always, was amazing.
The part that I'm surprised and very disappointed that there are a signficant number of fans who begged them to test a curved bullet. Seriously? Are people just that stupid?!? On a previous myth it took many, many rare earth magnets to get a bullet to slightly change it's trajectory when they were doing a James Bond myth about the magnet in a watch. You fire a bullet, and it's travelling at hundreds of miles an hour, and you're going to somehow curve it by moving the weapon in an arc when it's being fired. It makes me wonder about the intelligence of human beings.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Game (1991)
One of the worst episodes
Listening to a podcast and their saying how good this episode is. REALLY?
A stupid game somehow turns everyone into opposite personalities and let's someone control them. They somehow disable Data, which is a BIG stretch, considering he's faster and more aware of anyone else.
Then a FLASHING LIGHT disables the addiction!?!?!? REALLY!?!?!?
Stupid idea, stupid implementation.
If you wanted to do an allegory of how addictive video games can be, this is a perfect blue print on how to do it WRONG.
I thought it was great to see Ashley Judd again, wish she'd been on more episodes, but she got REALLY popular, just a shame she's on such a horrible, unrealistic episode.
M*A*S*H: Life with Father (1974)
Can't stand Henry
This is one of the episodes that really irks me about Henry. He's all worried about his wife possibly cheating on him, and how many times has he cheated on her? Hundreds? Thousands? He's wishy washy, doesn't have any integrity at all. Potter is SO much better than this clown, who should have never been made Lt. Col.
I thought the Bris was a cute story, of course Frank gets all bent out of shape because of something minor. The series really improves when Frank and Henry are gone. I also think BJ's better than Trapper, but that's not until the beginning of next season.
All in all, and ok epsiode, just can't stand Henry.
Psych: Right Turn or Left for Dead (2013)
Seriously?
Their whole relationship is based on him being psychic? They're really reaching for this one. I love the show, but this was really pathetic attempt at drama. For her to say their whole relationship is based on him being psychic minimizes the time they spent together, the emotions they have for each other. It's just stupid. For her to be that sure and disturbed about this "revelation" also shows that she's not that bright and hadn't figured it out. Maybe she's just angry at herself that she had been schnookered, I dunno.
I think it would have been a LOT more realistic if she just responded, "Well, duhhhh" or something like that, and life would just go on as normal.
For her to focus on this means she's ignored the fact that he was honest when it came down to it. Does that matter? Nooooooo.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Offspring (1990)
Great Episode
This is an amazing episode that shows that in ONE EPISODE the characters and the guest star that plays Lal could get into the viewer and make them feel the loss when she passes away at the end.
I understand why they had to have the Admiral involved, but I really hate that someone would think they know better than someone else and push them around. This kind of stuff I'm sure happens today.
The ending was beautifully done.
Lastly, why coulnd't Star Trek Discovery do this? When they have the last episode right before the crew goes to the year 3000 or something, you just don't care! The writers of Discovery should take notes of this and other great TNG episodes, and dump that pathetic idiot Kurtzman. Maybe we'd see some good Trek there. (Note, he wasn't involved in the 3rd season of ST:Picard and it was much better)
Star Trek: The Next Generation: Up the Long Ladder (1989)
I liked this episode....
I know there are many out there who see this episode as ridiculous, but any episode that has Stewart laughing while in character and then improvise his next line, has got to have something to it.
I understand that some get upset about the right to life or right to choose stuff, get over it. It's STAR TREK.
I understand some get upset about how the Irish are portrayed, get over it. It's STAR TREK.
Don't take things so seriously or personally, my gosh. I could get upset about the whole right to *whatever*, but it's just a TV show.
I enjoyed it from the entertainment view. Worf and Pulaski bonding. The fire that was put out in the cargo bay. The Irish guy trying a Klingon drink and was surprised.
Great episode.
Boston Legal: The Mighty Rogues (2008)
Why? Why do they keep having stories with Jerry's problem?
Firstly I think this series is hilarious. I haven't laughed so hard on a series.
But WHY, WHY do they keep having these stories with Jerry getting in trouble? It's getting old!
I love the stories with Denny and Alan, they're the focus of the show, and I'm SURE they can come up with stories for others, I'm just getting SO tired of Jerry. They got rid of characters that were lots better, and kept HIM?!?!?
This will be one of those shows I watch just once. I end up skipping the parts with Jerry and whomever else is annoying in the show. The smarmy opposing council for one.
Also, how do they always win? Who's paying these clowns anyways?
MythBusters: San Francisco Drift (2015)
I can't believe some people think drifing is faster
This episode consisted of Adam and Jamie learning to drift, in an attempt to compare it to normal race driving, you know... with out all of the ludicrous sliding about like you were too cheap to buy GOOD quality tires for your car. The younger generation of "gear heads" or "petrol heads", is sadly mistaken on things like this along with the loud mufflers that the slap on their little 4 cylinder engines. I figure they were never taught as little kids that slapping your feet on the ground does NOT mean you're going fast. I just means you're making lots of noise.
Anyways, the idea of drifing being faster ranks up there with an earlier myth they covered of shooting with the gun held sideways. Done simply because it's "cool". But those of us who know better, see it for what it really is.
Silly.
MythBusters: Square Wheels (2012)
Boggles the mind...
It boggles my mind on how stupid people can be. How could square wheels actually be a thing? What, are we supposed to belive round wheels are part of some conspiracy? That somehow all of this time we've been using round, but somehow square is better? And the idea that it could be a smooth ride is just insane.
I love mythbusters, and think they do some of these myths as entertainment, I get it.
But when they started talking about staring the wheels at different angles, it started making me wonder. Wheels don't turn at the same rate when turning - sure, it'd be fine straight, but as soon as you turn right, the right wheels will turn slower than the left wheels because they have to cover less distance, it's why we have this thing called... wait for it... a differential.
Just don't get it.
MythBusters: Speed Cameras (2007)
Problem with this kind of mythbusting...
Several times the Mythbusters would do police-involved myths. I have a problem with them... the lie detector, the breathalizer, the speed camera, and the radar speed checking.
Do you REALLY, HONESTLY believe the police would participate in something that would show how to defeat their techniques?
NO! Of course not! I just skip episodes like this when I'm watching the series, because what's the point of watching something when you KNOW what the outcome is going to be?
These kinds of episodes are as believable as the "oogie boogie" myths, like pyramid power, the plants emitting some sort of emotion, etc.
I love the show, don't get me wrong, but I think they should have thought better of these kinds of myths.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: Cause and Effect (1992)
Great episode... great episode... great episode...
I thought this was a very interesting episode.
I mean, the teaser starts with the Enterpirise blowing up. How can that not be a good episode?
What gets me is how many people called into their TV stations telling them something was wrong with the episode. I mean, how stupid are people? Didn't ever occur to them that it was a frickin' LOOP when after the teaser the Enterprise is un-blown up?
Kinda makes me think that all the research indicating people who are big fans of Star Trek are really bright may not be that accurate after all.
Anyways, love the ending with Frasier showing up, I was hoping for someone to say "NORM!" on the bridge of the other ship when someone came out of the turbolift.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Outcast (1992)
The "trek" way of handling LGBT
Many people whine and complain that the Next Generation never handled LGBT. They obviously haven't watched TNG, because they aren't paying attention.
Star Trek is at it's best when it's an ALLEGORY. They don't do stuff right in your face as many are looking for, and ST:Discovery did to an art form.
Why allegory? Because Trek at it's best doesn't hit you over the head, it makes you think. Racism handled by having two individuals who are painted half white and half black. Their prejudice based on which side is white and black. Really points out how stupid racism is. It's not in your face about it.
This flips things around. It shows how an individual who is inclined to a gender is reprogrammed to fit their societies norm. That has happened in the US society. No, it's not enforced, but it's possible to receive "treatment" to push you to what's considered "norm". That's what happened in this episode.
As Roddenberry stated, there's no one skipping around singing show tunes, showing the rainbow symbol, kissing same gendered, etc, because in their time, it's not an issue. Cop out? Some say yes, I think in it's time 30+ years ago, this is the best they could do.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: Final Mission (1990)
Great Wesley episode, really stupid other story...
Apparently the writers haven't heard of INERTIA or GRAVITY. They could EASILY have cleared a path for the barge after setting it on a course, and let the stars gravity pull it in. I mean, don't they have a "science" consultant? Couldn't they come up with something other than "Oh my! We must fly right in front of the radiation thing so we can be exposed and create all this tension!
I love Star Trek, but from what I've been hearing, a lot of the writers just aren't that creative. They complain about not having conflict between the main characters, which is the cornerstone of Star Trek (except DS9 - which is why it's NOT Star Trek). For pity's sake, open your mind!
Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Measure of a Man (1989)
Smarmy b**tard
I loved this episode but hate that smarmy Maddox. Very satisfying to know how he dies. The episode handles how we view life, what qualifies as life. This is handled in several episodes of the series. I think it's funny how all of the news about how people are worried about AI taking over, and from what I've heard from experts, the AI of today is much like an amoeba. AI doesn't have to be a bad thing, just how we use it.
It was interesting to see Riker put into an adversarial role, the "bad guy", even though he didn't believe it himself.
LOVED Whoopie as Guinan in this episode. She really pointed out to Picard where this was going.
Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)
Can't believe....
I've listened and read all of people trying to determine what the reason why this didn't perform that great at the box office. It's real simple. Data always represented the "child like" curiosity, and having him killed off is like killing a child. And you wonder why less people saw it? If they don't see it, then it didn't happen. Pretty simple.
I for one would have loved if they could have written some way of getting data into a woman's android body - it could have easily been done! Can't you just see when he first looks down and looks at his ... chest, and has that quizzical, questioning look at this... chest. It would have made the movie better, it could have released Brent Spiner from having to play the role in the future. Almost like how they do Dr. Who.
It just astonishes me how narrow minded the "creative" writers were in not coming up with another way.
Star Trek: For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky (1968)
One HUGE HUGE plot hole...
They're always talking about how they don't know they're on a space ship... Yet they talk about how this holy book will be made available to the people WHEN THEY REACH THEIR DESTINATION.... Wait.. WHAT?!??! If they're going to reach a destination, doesn't that mean they're, ya know, MOVING?
Just seems really stupid oversight.
